There are other factors that weigh into a decision to start, bench, or sign a player than projections and what ‘seems to be the right choice.’ As Carlisle went on to explain: “At this point in time Dirk at the 5 position is probably the best scenario for Dirk and for our team. And I just don’t think Dirk is the guy that is going to come off the bench as long as I’m here.” Then he reiterated his previous point as if to emphasize it. “There’s a very good chance Nerlens is going to come off the bench.” Carlisle also unsure if Seth Curry will start. If Noel really isn't starting, I'm guessing the starting 5 will be Smith Jr/Curry/Matthews/Barnes/Dirk. The fact that he's been starting speaks to their hideous lack of talent at pf for the last half decade for some reason i hallucinated a brief time in which he developed a bit of a post game and was scoring closer to 20 ppg than 10, but looking over his stats I guess I imagined the whole thing. He's never played over 28mpg in his career although he has started most games.
