Dude poverty in the US doesn't come anything close to what exists in other countries. We have a minimal and lovely safety net in the US that needs massive overhaul, but we don't have large portions of our country literally starving to death or dying from easily preventable diseases like cholera and dysentery (like literally stuff that can be fixed with gatorade). If we get to that point, come and give me all the hot internet takes you want.

poverty in developing countries is more like living on less than a dollar a day.

this is no bullshit.

america's poverty line would go ridiculously far to improving almost every country in africa to an exponential degree.

you know what people here have when they are below the poverty line? cell phones.

you know what people in places like western Kenya have that improves their quality of life a shitload? fuckin mosquito nets.

like yeah we need to solve america's poverty problems, but it would take the entire country collapsing (like literally, a huge sinkhole swallowing every major city and every major financial district) for us to be even close to the poverty in a lot of developing countries, and even then we would still probably be rich as gently caress in comparison.

Or we could invest that money into healthcare, education, school nutrition programs, etc that would all have a positive effect on not only the military but American society as a whole. Maybe even throw some of that $$$ to the VA to make sure those who served their country are cared for properly by a well-staffed and functioning organization. I will admit it's not as sexy as the 500th M1 Abrams the Army doesn't want, another tomahawk to blow up some insurgents armed with AK's, or providing Boeing/LockMart CEOs with retirement parachutes, but maybe we could give it a try.

Or... leave military funding where its at, maybe get more for upkeep and withdraw for the money sink that is forever war so we recover our rediness

Then you tax the rich to raise education and healthcare spending to double that of military spending!

Framing it as 'Well, at least its not as bad as Africa' isn't actually helping your argument, nor does it excuse our poverty issues in one of the wealthiest countries on Earth, as you yourself pointed out, and its only going to get worse as wealth is further concentrated into the hands of even fewer.

saying we are on our way to third world status, or that we are in any way comparable, is stupid. we have a loooooooooooonnnggg way to go and it will likely never occur in any of our lifetimes.

~200-300 nonstate actors are behind almost all of the breaches since 2005, and operate at a level beyond most (implied, US) cybercommands operate at. It's like an organized crime cartel on steroids according to the keynote speaker this morning.

Total number of breached records and services have reached a sort of critical mass that makes future macro-scale breaches and hacks exponentially easier and within the reach of less sophisticated actors. 2017 trending to blow away 2016 record and that was before the SEC and Deloitte things went public last week.

Hold onto your asses.

I've always speculated that our government is so bad at cyber war because that movie trope where a kid hacks the pentagon and gets hired by the government is the opposite of the truth- he gets thrown in federal prison and banned from ever touching a computer again. Meanwhile in Russia and China they actually do get scooped up to work for the government. Is there anything to that?

I figured it was that our hacker culture is either libertarian or anarchist, either way pretty anti-patriotic and anti-authority. Russia and China groom authoritarian hackers.

If the GOPs zombie care #18 ends up being "Let each state decide to keep obamacare or get a block grant" then all the blue states will have obamacare and all the red states will exaserbate their health problems and societal decline. Not a good outcome but, I guess federalism works? :votegop:
