I assume its some sort of mousse? Or like, liquid chocolate yogurty thing. They make lots of them in the UK and they're nice, tastes like chocolate has the consistency of yogurt. I mean yeah it gives you turbodiabetes and makes you fat but it's a dessert. I'd eat the twix one.

All of the above? Tap water or wells can probably take the place of $100+ cases of bottled water, unless you're living on an oil slick. As for the rest of the food, it's all imported goods. Costs in Alaska get offset by the Permanent Fund Dividend (currently paying over $1000 a year, though it's peaked as high as $3100 before and varies year by year) and Alaska has low taxes and no statewide sales tax. If you're not in Alaska, you'd better get good at hunting and fishing.

All of the above? Those are after the government subsidies, I believe. They just don't eat good food and instead eat a lot of frozen/prepackaged stuff that's cheaper. It's an arctic food desert, essentially. And a lot of Inuit do try to hunt to supplement their diets, with varying degrees of success.

Arivia posted:Sure. I was talking about Canada though because those are Canadian pictures. There is the Nutrition North Program or whatever it's called. In their infinite wisdom, the Conservative government implemented it such that it was an annual direct cash payment towards the handful of store owners, who pinky-swore to apply it directly to food prices. As a result, this market-model approach promoted efficiency and transparency and subsequently Arctic children dramatically improved their level of nutrition and ahahaha none of that actually happened. The owners pocketed the cash with zero oversight and things are still pretty lovely! In a faintly mocking gesture, the government "fixed" the system by requiring all stores to print on each receipt the total subsidy received for the goods purchased. Most people largely rely on community freezers, fishing and subsidized hunting of migratory fowl and rapidly dwindling caribou herds to survive. When skinning a caribou, you often find botfly larvae under their pelt and it's apparently quite a delicacy when eaten live! Although I'm told that only the old grandmothers still eat them.

Also, the pre-digested lichen in the caribou's stomach is an excellent source of plant food.
