I gotta say, I haven't been feeling the Crystal Kingdom chapters. The dialogue and character art are as good as they've always been, but every other aspect of the art is just gone. There's no sense of place. It's like the Crystal Kingdom is just a series of featureless planes. That style gave the Flower Kingdom a phantasmagoric vibe, but if that's how the rest of the series is going to be it's not going to work. It's hard to tell when Cucumber and co. move to a different location, which makes it more difficult than it should be to understand what's happening plot-wise. I know Gigi has health issues and is busy revising the previous pages for publication, but it's really hard to stay interested.

My main problem with the story at this stage is just that Cucumber and company is just so much less interesting than Peridot/Cordelia/NK. I had to think for a bit where we even left off with our main characters. That sounds overly harsh though because it's not that Cucumber's story isn't good, and more that it had just been a while and that run of Peridot stories was so good.

The story has really lost direction. Cucumber and co are still trying to defeat the DMs and collect autographs, right? Have we even seen the DM for the Crystal Kingdoms? We've seen Glitchmaster cause havok, we've seen Thebestmaster set up plot points that will be important five years down the line, but the actual person our heroes are supposed to be pursuing is completely absent. Are the Crystal Kingdom's even under attack?

Well, I mean, Dreamside isn't in peril. We already know that the Nightmare Knight will step in to avoid any actual harm his Disaster Masters do, so they're no longer a threat. The two main plot threads are (a) helping Double Knight save his children and (b) the looming threat of Dave.

I think that the "slump" is due to the fact that the story itself has slowed down after the breakneck pace of the Flower Kingdom, especially the boss fight against Rosemaster; but also because the pace of the updates has slowed down too, from four, five, sometimes six pages per week to just two. This is a breather chapter anyway, more focused on character development instead of story progression, and I'm sure that when we'll look back upon it later on and re-read it in one go it will be perfectly fine, but reading it as it's publish it really feels like it's dragging on.

We've just been in the middle of another interlude just like has happened in between every chapter. We're about to start chapter 5 and we'll be diving right into the Crystal Kingdom's problems and the disaster master so hold your horses

Cucumber seems receptive to dismantling it, and probably wants to dismantle it, but he's not actively going about dismantling it. This is a reflection of the larger issue, which is Cucumber isn't actively doing anything, he mostly reacts to the circumstances and dangers around him. This was fine when there's a flashy, visible DM to aim him (and his friends) at, but now that there isn't it's become a real drag on the story. It's kind of appropriate in a way. CQ is styled after older console RPGs (I think the Paper Mario's specifically?) and the story has finally reached the dull point in the middle.
