My first memory of the internet was playing some adventure game with graphics on my grandparents' old computer, it was all text based but it had photos. For some reason I think they had CompuServe? I would love to figure out what that game was. e: maybe they had very early AOL, I sincerely can't remember it was sometime during Ren & Stimpy's run.

Schnorkles posted:looking back on everquest i know i will never have an experience like that ever again Every once in a while I get nostalgic for Everquest Like, I think about the time I fell off a ship and was murdered by a giant fish, and had to enlist the help of a friendly necromancer to find my sunken corpse and get all my gear back, then hang out on a deserted rock until another ship happened by so I could swim through its permeable deck and sail back to civilization, and I'm like "that was really unpleasant at the time but it's loving wild that that's an experience I had in an early 3D computer game" and farming Crushbone with PUG groups was actually a lot of fun in the same way later MMO dungeons were but then I think about the hours I spent failing to make pie tins because I wanted to be able to craft armor, and remember that I was paying for that privilege gently caress that game.

Schnorkles posted:looking back on everquest i know i will never have an experience like that ever again Looking back at it I just love how loving brutal and unforgiving it was. Experience loss, level losses, dying meant you had to run back to your corpse to grab your gear. Oh and you had to bind yourself to a city to respawn so if you die on the other side of the continent you're SOL. There wasn't fast travel and in PVP server (or was it all PVP, I can't remember) everyone killed everyone else. I loving loved that game.

everquest was janky as poo poo and had a ton of emergent gameplay and was designed just well enough to have a coherent power curve but still have really unexpected things and it was before data mining so there was a bit of mystery to everything combined with the brutality of the game and the time commitment necessary it was a very unique experience but i would never ever go back

There wasn't fast travel and in PVP server (or was it all PVP, I can't remember) everyone killed everyone else. MMOs are like easy mode now. And don't forget that you couldn't go to certain cities as certain races or the guards would instantly attack you. The enchanters disguise spells actually had a use.
