Yeah, or something related to Vietnam.

Yeah, was there ever anything funny or interesting about Norton? I've never understood why anyone gives a poo poo.

The interesting bit is undoubtedly the part where everybody decides to go along with him. Any crazy person can declare themselves emperor, but not everybody accepts homemade currency from them and gets a state funeral. Also, he gets a very sympathetic portrayal in nerd favorite Sandman.

Yeah, if anything Norton is emblematic of a near-mythical time in American history when people would just humor a guy like Norton and not call the cops on him or ignore him. Its not even like there was a time period when people were nicer, it just stands out for how utterly unbelievable it all is.

It's also emblematic today as a fairy tale of San Francisco. It's a city that would like very much to see itself as a place of absolute acceptance and no judgment.

I wonder if when they go to Australia they'll do a thing on hutt river province (some guy in the 1970s WA proclaiming himself a principality, even going to the effort of coins and passports), he's still around and only this year abdicated to his son. It was a big tourist attraction 20-30 years ago

Straw Hat Riot - Amazing
Hugh Glass - Holy poo poo what a bad rear end
Worst VP Ever, Richard Johnson - Eh
Boxer Tim "Doc" Anderson - So sad
Actor Rivalry - I was almost pissing myself I was laughing so hard
The Cereal Men - I couldn't get into this one (although I laughed really hard at the Graham Cracker reveal)
Stagecoach Mary - Really interesting. For some reason I had always thought she robbed Stagecoaches
The History of Bowling in the United States - I never thought Bowling could be entertaining but Dave and Gareth know the crazy poo poo I love

Thank you all so much for the recommendations! The Dollop has replaced just about every other media I used to consume because I enjoy listening and laughing so much.

There's a really great book called The Years of the Locust which was the primary source for this episode. It's where all the insane details come from, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Someone recently uploaded the 2nd Anderson-Gastineau fight on youtube - so now you too can see a man destroyed in front of your eyes.
