Look at this. https://twitter.com/CBSNews/status/912689727513513985 Look at it. Don't avert your eyes. Look at it. Puerto Rico should be the focus of the biggest humanitarian and development effort since the Dust Bowl & New Deal, and instead this is happening. I keep having to bite back some choice words since the Internet remembers everything. So many people in Puerto Rico are going to die and there is nothing we as citizens can do about it. This feeling is singular.

apparently fox news has been whining that jimmy kimmel has been slagging the graham-cassidy bill on his show with facts courtesy of schumerquote:"Think about this. For months, a network evening show has been talking to one side of the aisle to get their talking points on a bill. If you want confirmation that the so-called mainstream media is actually the opposition party in bed with the Democrats, there you have it," the Fox News host said.

Leon Trotsky 2012 posted:Are Norway, Sweden, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, and New Zealand no longer capitalist countries? Countries with strong welfare states tend to have lower Gini coefficients. This isn't always the case, but tends to be the general trend (although I see that he does mention France). Capitalism and its political allies do work to erode the welfare state over time however (see defunding of NHS in the UK, attempts to privatize education in Sweden, privatization of parts of the energy sector in Canada, etc). I found the article, but can't seem to find the original data it's based on, though.

Agreed, but I was just making fun of the guy who was quoting the Professor saying, "Most Western economies lead to large wealth inequalities. But we haven't been able to identify a single factor that is present in all of them that has statistically significant impacts on their different performance." and responding to him with, "Lol, it's capitalism you moron."

I know your entire gimmick is 'willfully dense trolling' but countries with stronger welfare states don't tend to have as many problems with income inequality as those that don't do as much for their citizens. In modern political rhetoric, at least in the US, those states are often considered 'more socialist' due to the stronger social safety net. I could certainly be wrong, but this is a very simple and surface level reading of the single quote you decided to post like 6 or so times arguing against trying to score cool points or whatever it is you do when you decide to misinterpret something on a technicality.

In modern political rhetoric, at least in the US, those states are often considered 'more socialist' due to the stronger social safety net. It's not a technicality. Read the paper. Literally no economist in the world would call Japan, Canada, or Taiwan a "socialist economy." Words mean things and in an academic study trying to identify international economic common threads with statistical impacts on inequality, they are not using "political rhetoric that is often considered accurate in the United States." Saying, "What an idiot this professor is! The common thread is capitalism." is surface level reading and not understanding the actual problems being discussed. You can never make an effective change if you don't even know what is being discussed.

MizPiz posted:The study was specifically focusing on European countries. You clearly don't care about the data as much as you pretend to. It was examining why most Western Countries have different performances. The answer is not capitalism, because capitalism exists in non-western countries and some Western countries don't see GINI coefficients as high as others. Calling the Professor an idiot for not saying capitalism is very silly and implies a surface-level understanding.

I don't think even the most hardcore tankie would say it's impossible to reduce inequality in a capitalist economy so I'm not sure what your point is. They would say it's impossible to eliminate it, because inequality is inherent in capitalism!
