The Hocus Pocus sequel that gets mentioned as being in production every year when we get close to Halloween is being mentioned again, except now it's going to be a direct-to-Disney Channel sequel which sound like the most probable way of it actually happening. I doubt any of the original cast will return but maybe they will pay for Kathy Najimy as she shows up in other Disney movies

Hmmm...
The first couple of minutes involve the Dude-in-a-girl's-body groping his own breasts incredulously.

The girl whose body is swapped keeps having to leave notes saying 'Stop molesting my own body when I'm not in it.' (though in less crass terms)

The dude gropes this girl's breasts so much that her little sister takes notice of it 'when she starts acting weird.'

Even its perversion is so boring it barely registers, and it somehow fails to even meet normal anime quality of convincing/earned romance. It's missing like one or two more scenes needed to establish that they have feelings for each other before kicking into the final act conflict.

The whole entire comet hits town and our body switching lovers must stop it thing is hilariously unnecessary and is endemic of the biggest problem Makoto Shinkai has with his features: he gets scared that the little story he's telling can't hold up to the 90 to 120 minutes of a full feature film so he jams in some insane subplot that cuts into what he's very clearly actually interested in. Meanwhile every short he's done is incredibly focused and good (if sappy as hell; someone once described Shinkai as "a walking talking missed connection craigslist post" and that is as good a descriptor as I could possibly imagine).

His features make for good premises, but never seem to become good movies.

So it's almost appropriate that JJ Abrams, who tends to make the exact same mistakes (Super 8 is the most prime example, where "a young boy falls in love with the daughter of the man who accidentally killed the boy's mother" is seriously a great premise on its own, but then for some reason there's a monster in the movie that eats away at all of those scenes for spectacle's sake), is grabbing hold of it.

Is he the guy who made Girl who Jumped through Time and Summer Wars? Because that's the exact problem with those two movies.

If Hollywood wants to adapt an anime they should do Wolf Children because that movie made me tear up for all the right reasons. Its really one of the best anime movies I've seen recently with intimate high stakes.

He's the guy who made The Place Promised In Our Early Days and Children Who Chase Lost Voices, which are respectively a pretty bad movie and a loving awful, soggy lump of Ghibli impersonation. He also did the shorts Voices From A Distant Star, three shorts woven together as a movie called 3/cm A Second, and The Garden of Words, all of which are pretty all right. He's also known as the "cloud porn" guy, because holy poo poo does that man love drawing clouds and does it ever loving show.

Mamoru Hosoda is the guy who did Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Summer Wars and Wolf Children and The Boy And The Beast, and he has the key capability of managing to wrangle his high concepts into being propulsion for the characters and their emotional states and some greater thematic point in general (although Boy + Beast overstuffs itself way too much in the last hour of the movie and becomes by far the weakest thing he's done).

I'm actually surprised Warner Bros., who distributed Summer Wars in Japan, never tried to negotiate any live action remake rights for it.

Oh, I wouldn't count Summer Wars out yet. Personally I wasn't a fan because the A plot and B plot were totally disconnected, but the B plot is basically e-sports champ saves the day could totally be appealing to a certain segment these days.

But seriously, Wolf Children is a fantastic and relatable movie, despite being about literal wolf children.

First thought is it'd be an adaptation of the considerably more violent and gory original comic where the Mask is more a cartoon-physics powered Mr Hyde who subjects people to cartoonish punishment with realistically fatal results, which seems a lot less interesting than the idea the movie turned it into of basically a superhero who power is being a real life cartoon character. Besides, I think the former is basically the Leprechaun movies.

Finding Neverland (a J M Barrie biopic) back in '04 had a great run at the box office and was nominated for 7 Academy awards, winning one of them. That at least shows that there's an audience out there who are still interested in the story.

Also Disney have a bunch of open slots in 2020 and 2021 reserved for "Untitled Disney Live Action" and you know they're gonna get around to their entire back catalogue of classic eventually. Disney have also sunk a heck of a lot of time and effort into establishing their Tinkerbell franchise into a whole thing on its own and they'd no doubt love to push that along a little further as well.

Edit: a little googling shows that there were announcements about an upcoming Disney live action Peter Pan back in 2016 but that was right before their live action Pete's Dragon remake came out and I'm guessing the soft reception to that film put their Peter Pan plans on the backburner for a while.

Does make one wonder how you make a good live action Peter Pan adaptation. I suppose you don't know til you try.

Might be a problem in that it unavoidably requires child actors. Probably why they always end up either having Pan be an adult or focusing on Hook at the expense of everything else.

Also I imagine Disney wouldn't mind taking the focus off one of their more racist movies in hindsight.

Hmmm...
Y'all are forgetting one thing, the Disney Peter Pan will have one thing going for it that no other Peter Pan could ever have. Tinkerbell. Specifically, the Disney Tinkerbell. The character that was a marketing juggernaut, well before they made spinoff movies with her.

You know that they're going to get Emma Stone or somebody, give them that bun with the bangs, put them in the tiny green dress, and some unknowable force is going to drive every mom in the country to go see it (I call it the Tinkerbell effect).

And even if I'm wrong, I'm sure the film would have the same effect as the Cars franchise. Relatively okay-but-not-great box office, super loving huge juggernaut based off of the merchandise alone. Tinkerbell merchandise specifically.

Men in Black is back in black with a new spinoff in teh works and fast-tracked

quote:

The studio today will stake out a May 17, 2019, release date for an untitled film that has a script by Matt Holloway & Art Marcum, the writers of Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight.

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones aren’t expected to reprise, but the film acknowledges and builds on the world they inhabited. Holloway & Marcum have scripted a contemporary sci-fi pic about the black-clad secret force that protects earth from the alien scum of the universe, focusing on new characters chasing villains that put the picture on more of a global scale than the two previous films. The ambition is akin to the way that Jurassic World rebooted and expanded that franchise.

Don't worry, the 21 Jump Street crossover that was rumored to be cancelled may only be on the backburner and not completely cancelled

That idea remains in development, but the spinoff is moving quickly and will come first.

Not necessarily. Jungle Book and BatB both went heavy on the CGI, and notable Disney film Star Wars: Rogue One shows that fully CGI people (and so, children) are at least possible.

And since Peter Pan is some kind of discreetly monstrous fey-human, you even have a built in excuse for everyone looking off.
