Automata has the same fandom problem as the witcher 3 did - try g to elevate tits and rear end into some deep statement about character development or themes comes off as desperate, not a big element of world building.

Your fan service robot sorceress lesbians can be criticised as fan service robot sorceress lesbians without making the rest of the game bad through association, ya weirdo.

Recently started playing the witcher 3 after owning it for a few months. Not too far in but I'm really digging how fleshed out and long some of the quests are. Last one I did was about a demon miscarried baby coming back from the grave to get revenge.

I haven't finished the entire quest, or read anything about the few ways (I'm assuming?) it could be resolved, but I did the good guy thing and turned it into a protective spirit that would guard it's family. I hope the rest of the game is this insane.

But if you think sexual or titillating content can never be anything more than fan service, well, maybe you shouldn't try to talk about art.

My favorite thing about the Witcher 3 actually involves that quest. There are no good endings to that quest. No matter what you do, something is going to go poorly for a lot of people. Either the kids are left to be eaten by witches, or an entire town is slaughtered by a horse demon. Either the Baron gets his wife back and he'll probably start beating her again, or he kills himself and his awful brute squad starts terrorizing the countryside worse than they were.

Anyway, I'm not sure what topic to put it in, but I've noticed some weird stuff playing through Metroid Prime this time around. For a start, when you get the phazon suit there's an in-game issue where Samus' arm is not only the wrong color (it doesn't match the third person color of the suit) but the little light on the back of the hand is blue, when the suit's red. But missiles can't open doors, yet the flame breath of the magmoor enemies can. Also it might have just been specific to the version I was playing, but every time I killed a security drone with the wave buster, they'd just fall straight through the ground and vanish forever. None of it really matters in any way, but it's just weird poo poo I've noticed. Also there's one lore scan in the very first area of the game, a pirate frigate, and despite the fact that you revisit the frigate after it crashes you can't get that scan ever again.

It's been a couple years since I've played Metroid Prime so I don't know if it's the same issue I'm thinking of, but when they made the Wii remake, they had to change how a lot of stuff (mainly the arm cannon) were rendered and it made them unable to do some of the visual effects that were in the original Gamecube version.

It's such a fantastic port otherwise, that I'm willing to overlook a handful of visual flaws.

BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP

Gamecube discs were roughly half the diameter of regular DVD discs, which were what the wii used.
However, the arm cannon effects were made with a bit of overlaying trickery, which worked since the angle of the armcannon relative to your view didnt change much. Since there is complete free aim in the wii version and much more range of freedom for the armcannon to shift around that trick couldnt be reused as is, and had to be scrapped in favor of time.

The wii was nore graphically capable than the GC, notably so when it came to doing lighting. A lot of GC games looked really flat.

I think the effects that were lost were overlays like the heat haze after rapid firing your gun, or the ice that accumulates on the ice-beam after charging it. I can't recall at the moment. For some reason there's a really persistent rumor that the x-ray visor effect of looking at samus' hand through the cannon got cut but that is flatly untrue.

Johnny Aztec posted:

No, it was more a visual trick with how the visuals worked. Basically in the original, your gun only angled to specific degrees since you didn't have free aim, so most of the cool visual effects were just overlays onto the cannon. With the added free-aim of the trilogy they would have had to redraw and re-program the effects so they just cut them. I think the only non-gun related effect that straight up got removed was the special water effects that showed up in Corruption for all of like, three rooms.

EDIT: Also a weird thing I noticed, that I never noticed before because I never played with headphones is that each visor has a specific sound effect that plays constantly when you have it up and it's super annoying.

I think it's kind of a relief that Nier Automata's booty dress is literally just the designer going 'I like big butts and I can not lie'. It just happens that the cheesecake bullshit they chose is resonant and has value when assessed as a choice made deliberately, rather than dismissed as porn for teenage boys. The game is not really subtle about what it wants you to think about, and 2B's outfit (and 9S's as well) is never addressed at any point. I mean if you want to go full-on death of the author, go for it, but considering the game completely forgets to mention why 2B's not wearing pants, I feel like it's safe to just take Yoko Taro's "uh I like to look at cute butts" explanation at face value.
