Mr Phillby posted:It is maddening how often you see animation smears being posted as examples of bad animation or mistakes. I also remember how many people hated the Pain vs. Naruto fight for going off model despite it being legit the best piece of animation in entire run of that stiff rear end show. Pardon the weeb moment but Pain vs Naruto was one of the laziest fights the entire anime had and shippuden already have some incredibly sloppy quality. Lots of Still frames, monologues and flashback sequences, and when the fighting does happen it's at most a couple of minutes and it doesn't look that good. Sasuke vs Killer-B is a better animated fight as well as The other Akatsuki fights like Sasori vs Chiyi/Sakura. Although Tte best animated fights in my opinion happen all the way up to the valley of the end fight. After that it becomes Russian roulette.

Mr Phillby posted:Tbh I stopped watching soon after. Still my point is that it was that that one episode featured animation worlds more loose and expressive than anything up until that point and it fukken ruled. And the fans hated it. The reason people didn't like it is the same reason people that complain about SU. It looks bad. Having characters warp physically constantly, and excluding cherry-picked smear frames, is something of a turn off for some people. The famous sequence when pain goes for a punch Naruto and turns into play-doh is exactly what doesn't work with going off model. It's expressive yeah but "loose" is a hard sell when visual clarity and consistency are the currency. Now there are series that play loose with their animation but that is there from episode 1. I remember a series from years ago that had some monster hunter that fell in love with his target and the quality was all over the place, but again, it's an intended aesthetic. It worked in some cases but the show still had a cheap look to it overall.

SU is inconsistent between episodes, but individual episodes will be be largely internally consistent with their own models.

I'm pretty sure I do remember some of the instances of varying features during episodes that isn't just Amethyst doing her usual shape shifting but I could be wrong. Don't know where on the previous pages I read that it happens in SU during episodes; but whatever I thought combined with the Pain vs Naruto fight being referenced (which is multi-episode but the off-model moments happen within the same sequences as well) led me to believe that it's not just just differences in sizes between episodes and smear frames. Well on one hand we have people talking about design and animation and artistic fads and things that are fairly relevant to webcomics, and on the other hand people who... just kinda started weirdly screeching the moment it was mentioned? I mean, come on, this is the Webcomics thread. MikeJF fucked around with this message at 07:14 on Oct 1, 2017 |
