Reality Winner posted:latinum, a special metal whose only notable property is that it cannot be replicated. in my head it can be replicated, because everything material and especially anything that can go thru a transporter should be replicable, but it takes a lot of energy, the latinum itself is delicate somehow (like it breaks down if not handled just so) and most critically it has no useful function other than i guess demonstrating the precision and versatility of the most high precision replicators so theres no goddamn good reason to replicate latinum when you can replicate actual useful things w those replicators, ergo it became a prestige trade good among those societies that couldnt get onboard w pure post scarcity happy times which i guess means the federation has to dedicate a lil time on those powerful replicators to making latinum for their officers to use in trade, instead of just cranking out warp engines or terraformers or w/e capitalism literally robbing useful labor from a post scarcity utopia
