When automatic weapons were outlawed they let people keep ones made before the bill passed. They cost millions of dollars now and are hoarded by exactly the people you would expect. Welp

I knew about automatics being grandfathered in (I've actually seen a Sten on display in a shop once, for hilarious bucks) but automatic shootings are still rare enough that it's always a bit hard to process people getting their hands on that hardware at all.

Looks like every hotel in Vegas is going to have metal detectors at the door from now on.

NFA guns aren't that uncommon and you can get them for sub-10k prices if you feel like it. You can basically convert some older AR-15 models to FA with a lightning link:

Side note you could also get parts manufactured legally that in fact would give illegal FA fire if you dropped them in a gun. Amazon removed a full auto selector for Glock model airsoft guns that were made from steel and could be fit in actual firearms just last month.

If I recall correctly the number of incidents involving legally owned full-auto guns can basically be counted on one hand. One of them involved a gun store owner fending off a biker gang trying to kill him and steal his guns.

The target is really bizarre, a country music concert in Las Vegas. It seems like an opportunistic or last-ditch attack, e.g. attacker felt cornered or that he was gonna get caught, or he just wanted to shoot up a ton of people and theorycrafted the perfect scenario (large crowd next to a hotel somewhere close-ish to where he lived).

This and the method definitely sound like domestic right-wing terrorism but we'll see; expect a lot of "he was just a crazy lone wolf" takes.

We're all spitballing right now, but it doesn't strike me as a off-the-cuff thing. He had to arrange access to that room in the Mandalay, and it seemed like he picked a spot that he thought would give him good fields of fire to the crowd. This seems fairly well-planned.

These hotels don't have windows you can open, so he probably smashed it prior. It also took about 30 minutes before SWAT broke into his room. He fired for about 90 seconds and then spent about half an hour apparently sitting in his room instead of walking out before people could put two and two together.

Local news here just now says he has no prior record and is beginning the "who could have known" shtick.

That was apparently the woman's husband who's so far unrelated to this in any way.

If a right-winger wanted to shoot up a target, it wouldn't be a concert chock full of other right-wing people.

I'm not saying country music = trump supporter, I'm saying it's a popular music genre for people that speak with a twang and a lot of those people vote red and that's not really a secret.

They do tend to make rational decisions, in the sense that they have a reason for what they do. The issue is that trying to divine the shooter's motive from the genre of music is kind of reading tea leaves right now. Could be relevant but could just be about the number of people in one place.

Oh of course. Like yeah old white dude with guns, but Nevada also broke for Clinton and it's not like you need to be a registered Republican to buy a gun.

edit: Really I guess the only conclusion to be drawn is if you're white, media's going to rush to call you a lone wolf before we even get a motive.

"Lone Wolf" is just a designation for a single person committing a mass shooting, it doesn't say anything about their motives by itself.
