They could easily setup another character with similar powers and have the last half of the movie be a galaxy-throwing, existence shattering nightmare zone.

She got super powers from massive drug overdose, right? Why not a movie about people trying to do what she did and all the ways it goes wrong. Or maybe she loses her divinity because she came down from the high and has to take all the drugs to get it back.

Less begats and more story, and you sympathise with the main character, but it really runs off the rails at the end. Well, if you don't get another season what should you do? Writing a quick conclusion in a drug haze, blowing it all up was probably the easiest choice.

FreudianSlippers posted:Make the former protagonist just be god and get a new protagonist. The continuations of Genocyber did that and it kinda sorta worked? They were cheap cash-ins though. Genocyber was a cool manga but cut short due to clashing egos between its writer and artist. So to continue the animation they basically made it so after the comic ended any time she becomes Genocyber, like, the entire geo-political situation changes forever because like entire continents get rearranged/sunk/risen and stuff. So the main thing that's the title of the franchise only actually pops up a few times to obliterate tons of stuff. It was also sort of interesting to see a cyberpunk dystopia setting with crazy transforming cyborgs, a story set entirely on an aircraft carrier, and a story in post apocalyptic feudalism setting all taking place in the same general area over generations. Just wish it was better. :P Neo Rasa fucked around with this message at 22:30 on Oct 2, 2017 |

Did somebody say Genocyber Genocyber loving rules and I have no idea why it almost never gets talked about e: also the manga and OVA have like almost nothing to do with each other and I'm pretty sure the manga just got regular cancelled. the stuff you're talking about is exclusive to the OVA, which is beyond bugfuck insane and also awesome.

I respect how much they were willing to just roll "we created this being that's basically God but a human" to its logical conclusion. I think the hyper-violent scenes from it you see on YouTube a lot make people dismiss it like the genuine trash like Violence Jack or whatever when it's waaaaaaay better. I love how all the tricks animators used to save money somehow translated into really cool and atmospheric shots that get held longer. It seems to be a lost art these days. Edit: The whole sequence at the start of OEDO episode 2 is a perfect example: cheap, but really well-drawn atmospheric shots. MonsieurChoc fucked around with this message at 22:42 on Oct 2, 2017 |

MonsieurChoc posted:I love how all the tricks animators used to save money somehow translated into really cool and atmospheric shots that get held longer. It seems to be a lost art these days. Haha I wrote an article about Last Alert where I talk about that a bit. That was a video game but was interesting to see those early CD "it's just like an anime!!!" games where they had all this extra memory/etc. to work with, but were still cranking out stuff with those same shortcuts like they were making visual novels for an 80s computer. So you'd get these newer games that would still have like an elaborate frame around the action because it looked cool even though it wasn't needed to save memory by only having any action happening in a small square. But man even the trashy porn visual novels back then had sick cyberpunk art and music. I can see why people would get into them even if the writing is trash 100% of the time. Oedo is so good loving awesome and cool, the first episode is honestly the weakest one to me. And you're right the second episode's opening is fantastic. It's super dark too but you get a great sense of space what a lovely place he's walking into.

Hyper-violent 80s OVAs usually had really bonkers premises that, while usually influenced by live-action movies (Genocyber bites off Scanners pretty hard), end up bearing fairly little resemblance to whatever prompted them. I mean, poo poo, even MD Geist would probably make a pretty rad Hollywood movie, and that's pretty much the bottom of this particular barrel. e: I was going to put forth Mad Bull 34 as an idea, but somehow I don't think a direct adaptation would fly in today's political landscape, and if you take out all the nastiness you just end up with Officer Downe.
