Political Zogobot

Hello Zogoputer over the last few days I'd been googling some old articles and I found something odd, could you analyze this political/media data for me?

In early 2009, after the big financial collapse where it turned out the banks had been stealing from everyone with a house to make themselves richer. Obama had a meeting with the banks, Politico lifted a quote from it, and it seemed to distribute a narrative throughout major corporate media:
http://www.politico.com/story/2009/04/inside-obamas-bank-ceos-meeting-020871
this got cited in all kinds of major publications, check it out he's using Tough Talk with those villains:
http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2009/04/obama-to-banker.html
http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-obama-presidency19-2009apr19-story.html
https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2009/04/obama-protecting-banks-from-the-pitchforks/7235/
https://www.salon.com/2009/04/09/moyers_winship/
http://nymag.com/news/politics/66188/index1.html
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/25/books/excerpt-13-bankers.html?pagewanted=all&mcubz=0

But the full quote was "Be careful how you make those statements, gentlemen. The public isn’t buying that. My administration is the only thing between you and the pitchforks. You guys have an acute public relations problem that’s turning into a political problem. And I want to help. But you need to show that you get that this is a crisis and that everyone has to make some sacrifices. I’m not out there to go after you. I’m protecting you. But if I’m going to shield you from public and congressional anger, you have to give me something to work with on these issues of compensation.” I can't really find this reported anywhere until it's in a book that comes out in 2011ish

http://www.newsweek.com/why-cant-obama-bring-wall-street-justice-65009 -- From 2012, still misreporting same quote, metadata indicates title change from "Did Obama Sell Out?" and article concludes on a "we still believe he wants to do the opposite of what he has been doing" note

Why would seemingly every respected media company converge to present a misleading narrative? What benefit is there to telling people the Democrats were not complicit and encouraging of mass financial malfeasance? (Correct explanations were available at the time. Yves Smith analyzed things for the NYTimes and she's always real sharp, but it was kinda buried: https://roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/12/14/banks-real-reform-and-pitchforks/?mcubz=0 )

And what should anyone make of this trend?

Are sports is the only place where humans really try to balance our ideals of fair and lawful, everything in front of the refs eyes, and still take into account the human tendency to test the limits of every rule in an effort to succeed? Is that why people turn the games into grand historical institutions, vaunted histories, cherished collective memories, statues and plaques lining the memorial halls for the honored ancestors? Or is it just because dunks and dingers are deeply sick and it feels right and good to catch a ball ? Also, how can the net amount of entropy of the universe be massively decreased?

A million years ago I read a story about Brazil in the 1950s, hundred and hundreds of people, basically an entire town gathering around the one radio within 50 miles to listen to the World Cup (must've been '58 because I don't think they would've told the one about losing to Uruguay).

It seemed really neat, imagining 100s of folks hushing each other trying to hear the guy telling us what's happening with Pele and the ball

Did I remember to hit submit on this post ?

is the surge of Migos as a group connected to the rise of Friendship Basketbal (you can tell they're good friends enjoying themselves) and perhaps associated within a larger general movement or is it only a thematic happenstance

That's not strange at all. When I used to live in South America, I brought my TV to school during the World Cup and the school went into a quasi-shutdown mode. The teachers did not bother to have classes and everybody (including teachers) were huddling behind the TV during the whole World Cup.

Hah, that kinda rules. AFAIK the only times in the last few decades that USA schools were basically shut down to watch TV was 9/11 and the OJ Bronco Chase (we are the weird country)

It kind of makes sense though? Allows them to rotate in TT for when Bron or Love sit, which would still put him around 30 minutes a game. They can always have two of Love/IT/Bron on the floor (assuming IT is not dead). They then can rotate their freakshow amalgamation of wings, Crowder, Wade, JR, Korver as need be. I think it might be the smartest plan? It definitely looks goofy though

Jeremy Lin is the platonic ideal of Good Christian Boy. I doubt he's ever even considered taking illegal drugs because his pious aura makes all the fiends leave their marijuana cigarettes in their pockets, subdued by shame under Lin's righteous gaze. It's immensely obnoxious and he sorta sucks. Like Dwight Howard but smart instead of dumb

Anyhow I'm mostly postin' because I was thinking about Batum's left-hand shove after the hammer fist to Juan Carlos Navarros' important areas. I mean, obviously nothing's ever dethroning that Kerwin Bell gif for Ultimate gently caress You Shove status (he even got a flag thrown on him for celebrating) but Holy Twilight (in the German: Gott Dämmerung) that's a mean sock

That lineup looks awesome. Tons of passing between Bron, Love, and Wade should make up for Rose and Crowder. Also Thomas will probably start when he gets back and he'll easily be hid on defense and his negative rebounding with that lineup.

Maybe, but where Love's defense is as bad as advertised is when trying to rim protect against smaller players. I feel like that lineup is made to be P&R'd to death. Thompson is more important to that first unit than Wade will be.

Ghost Dog posted:

Not really. Quick glance I don't even think they played 100 minutes last year with Love not alongside Frye or Thompson, 82 Games says it was only 6% of the time. Compare that with the 800+ minutes of the starting lineups of Irving/(JR or Shump)/James/Love/Thompson. This is a pretty big shakeup.

Haha Kobe taunted him with "I don't know who that is" type comment before the game, pretending hey I'm a busy man I don't have time to watch all them NBA games or follow the storylines, then Lin dropped 38 on the Lakers that night. And after that Kobe was all "I think it’s a testament to perseverance and hard work. Good example for kids everywhere.”

Linsanity was the best thing that's ever happened to me but that don't change Lin being a doofy goober

So, the Pelican's PR released an injury report today:

https://twitter.com/PelicansPR/status/914954737174351877

I'm only posting this because of what they have down for Asik: http://www.spondylitis.org/Ankylosing-Spondylitis

quote:

Ankylosing spondylitis (pronounced ank-kih-low-sing spon-dill-eye-tiss), or AS, is a form of arthritis that primarily affects the spine, although other joints can become involved. It causes inflammation of the spinal joints (vertebrae) that can lead to severe, chronic pain and discomfort.

In more advanced cases this inflammation can lead to ankylosis -- new bone formation in the spine -- causing sections of the spine to fuse in a fixed, immobile position.

[...]

Currently, there is no known cure for AS, but there are treatments and medications available to reduce symptoms and manage pain.

[...]

It is important to know that ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic, or lifelong, disease and that the severity of AS has nothing to do with age or gender.

If you ever wanna overhear somebody unironically call the NFL the NO FUN LEAGUE, you gotta check out the stands of a CFL game in the prairies.

I think it's been toned down a little since peaking in the late 00's/early 10's, but I can't actually confirm that since I watch an average of 0.8 Stampeders games a year.
