This is probably where you can make a reliable BP battery, if you have freelancer maxed out.

But of course you won't. Actually I guess levelling up jobs evenly has advantages and late game the game just throws 999JP at you. So... no need to grind early.

Buff up essentially makes a knight immune to physical attacks. Deck one up in your best defensive gear, Use Ironclad on the first turn and voilà, your knight will take 0 damage from every physical attack for the remainder of the battle! Put your other party members in critical status and your other characters are free to wail on the opponent if he only uses physical attacks without any fear of being downed, even at level 1 or more.

The salve-maker is at its peak efficiency at this point in the game, since his multi-target options are relatively cheap and effective. If you had gotten him before fighting Praline, you could have used his items to kill the minions in one turn. And if you put the Red Mage ability that provides 1 BP per enemy killed, you could essentially loop Praline into summoning her minions every turn.

Abilities that change enemy target priority are HOT GARBAGE and I'm fairly confident they simply don't work even when hard-hitting enemies don't have massively damaging full party attacks

Yeah, the inconsistency with getting enemies to prioritize attacking one person (outside of one specific ability) greatly reduces the effectiveness of at least one of the jobs you can get in the future.

Well, I can't say I ever used the performer's version of directing attacks. I used the version another job had. We haven't unlocked the jobs yet, so I'll stop right here.

Also the performer has better things to do than redirect damage? If they're not buffing, they're handing out BP.

It goes by battle turns but even if you're in negative bp, you still get it's effects. Your taking a turn isn't important. Your being alive is.

Entry 56: Fire Vestal Dreams

With another of Eternia's foulest members put down, the party resumes their rescue mission.

All right, Tiz found the eastern staircase on the second try!

There's a new enemy type on the second floor.

Even a fire-breathing, stub-toed dragon-type beast cannot stand against Tiz's fury.

Grabbed a nice weapon from the Swordbearer/Black Blade's stash along the way.

Further down the hall is a small figure. Could it be?

That's right, not even a boss. So much for all those people mentioned in D's Journal. Qada's dead, and who knows where the others are.

You're safe now. We'll get you out of here.

That's right... Who are you?

We've come to help you.

Really? I-I was going to see the fire vestal...

What was that about the fire vestal?

Egil is in bad shape, so Tiz takes him up and carries the boy on his back. The party starts heading back to the entrance of Starkfort.

Indeed. And he owes his safety to your bold action, Tiz. Bold and foolish, I should say.

I cannot deny it was right to save the boy's life. But you have a higher calling, Tiz. The crystals' awakening hinges in part upon you.

Zzz...zzz...

He's out cold... Not that I can blame him, after all that.

Hey! Wake up, kid! You're our one clue here. HEY!

Airy! Stop that. At least let him rest until we arrive in Hartschild.

Airy thankfully listens to Agnès.

But as the party exits Starkfort, our attention turns back inside...

Phew... That was close. I made the right call drinking that concoction to fake my death. It seems the vestal was convinced of my demise. Hyah hyah...

The world is indeed full of fools. Now, it is time I left this wretched place.

B-but of course. I do what I must to survive, by any means necessary. As long as I survive, I am confident my fortunes will be reversed. Hyah hyah...

After all, who but I can create weapons with the power to kill tens of thousands in one fell blow?

......

*shing*

And once I am ready, I will obliterate you all... The Swordbearers and Shieldbearers, the vestal, and even the Black Blades...

And...and then...the world shall be--

Mine...

Not the world of the living...

If the party returns to Qada's lab after this scene, they find a surprising resident.

Honestly, what sort of great and noble swordmaster cuts someone down from behind!? Feh! And why do I feel all tingly? I hope I'm not coming down with something.

Qada's become a particularly oblivious, and luckily now harmless, ghost.

But instead the party continues on, blissfully unaware of his failed deception. A long walk later...

Hear hear. It's not like Tiz to go out on a limb like that. But we survived, and that's what counts.

The vestal...

You did well to carry him on your back all this way, Tiz. You must be tired, too.

I'm fine.

More importantly, this boy may know of a way into the Temple of Fire!

We should ask him now! Don't you agree, Agnès?

I do, if that is true.

First let's head to Commander Goodman's residence and give the boy a chance to rest.

Airy may not be being polite about it, but she's got a point about hurrying to that crystal.

The immediate effects of the corrupted fire crystal appear underwhelming, but increased tectonic activity around Mt. Karka could indicate an imminent volcanic eruption. Considering Mt. Karka's size, its eruption could cause a volcanic winter, causing a catastrophic global change in climate. It could be just as terrible as the oceans rotting and air stilling.

Do you know this boy?

His parents were part of our household guard. They lost their lives three years ago protecting my husband...

It's not stated how long the canary boys have been working in the mines, but for some, it may have been years. That and the constant exposure to toxic chemicals might help explain their strange, placid behavior.

As for Egil, he was described as "the new boy", so he probably hadn't been there nearly so long.

Mrs. Goodman. Could we ask you to look after Egil here for a while?

We can't take him with us where we're going.

Yes, of course.

Nhhh...

Where am I...? I...I-I have to...to hurry...

Hurry where?

The fire vestal...asked me to help... I have to go. Where is this? Where am I!?

Egil runs out the front door.

Could've gone better.

Tiz isn't going to let this kid get hurt, so we're on the hunt.

We know he left the house...

And there's no sign he left the city.

Ah, good. He's on the path leading down to the lava.

At least he isn't leaping into said lava.

Thank you for rescuing me. But I have to go back to the mythril mine...

We've recaptured the mine from the Swordbearers. You don't have to work there anymore. All your friends have been freed.

I still have to go back.

Agnès catches up to Tiz.

Does this have something to do with the fire vestal, Egil?

That's right.

Did you meet her?

No, I've never met her before. But I sometimes see her in my dreams. I really do!

......! The wind?

The deepest tunnel? Does it lead somewhere?

Yes... Who are you?

She is the wind vestal.

This tunnel may lead into the Temple of Fire.

Even in death, it seems the fire vestal is trying to fulfill her duty through Egil's dreams. I must see this done! I must...

Egil, show me the way to this tunnel.

Got it! Leave it to me!

Wait! Egil's in no state to go anywhere.

Hey!

Why do you object, Tiz?

Because it's dangerous.

Tiz and Agnès have once again found themselves at odds.

Agnès and Egil return to the Goodman's. Tiz stays outside, deep in thought.

Suddenly, the faint sound of 50s rock-and-roll comes from behind him.

Tiz...

He's asleep at last. Edea is with him now. Agnès and Airy are in a huff.

We couldn't let Egil take them into the mine. It's too dangerous.

......

You know, ever since we found Egil, you've stopped having your nightmares, Tiz.

The next morning:

Understood. Be careful out there.

Where is Egil now?

He's holed up in his room. He won't let anyone in.

No matter. I've questioned him thoroughly about the location of this passageway.

Let's set out, then.

Sounds like we're set. I'm sure everything will go according to plan.

Back to the mine!

That didn't take long.

Egil goes running by the party, a Black Blade on his tail.

Hmm?

What are you doing here!?

The party takes off after Egil's tormentors.

One shellacking later:

......

Are you listening to me, Egil?

But I'm the only one who knows how to open up the way through.

What!?

You have to squeeze into a really tight hole to open up the way through.

You'd never be able to fit! Not in a million years!

You said nothing about this back at the house! You tricked us!

I didn't trick you. I just left that part out.

It's the same thing! Anyway, I'm small enough to fit through a silly little hole.

But you're too tiny to move the stone lever that opens the passage up.

What stone lever!? You didn't say anything about that!

Nope, I didn't.

Well, we'll have to take Egil with us now. That's the only way to awaken the crystal.

We can't do that! What if he gets hurt!?

No need to yell at Agnès, Tiz! What are you so upset about?

I...

What do you propose, then, Tiz? Will you make him go back by himself?

I wouldn't do that. We'll go back with him.

What if the Swordbearers or Black Blades beat us to the temple?

Egil was just attacked by the enemy, right? He was held prisoner by them before as well. They may already be aware of this passage he found.

But...!

I believe we should focus on the task of awakening the crystal!

Exactly! To cleanse the darkness from the world, we must accept some risk, and some sacrifices...

What, then!? You have been impossible lately, Tiz! You are trampling upon the will of Egil, the late fire vestal, and me.

As the vestal, I cannot let you do this! Do not interfere with my mission!

Both Tiz and Agnès pause, taking a moment to reflect.

He reminds me of my little brother who died, Til...

What?

When that chasm opened up, and Norende was swallowed by darkness... My little brother, about the same age as Egil... He fell along with it...right before my eyes.

The look on his face as he stared back at me and fell into that black pit hasn't left my mind ever since...

The same goes for the water vestal! It was agony watching her life fade in front of me... I couldn't bear to watch Agnès cling to her and weep...

Only most of which he caused himself.

That's why I don't want to lead Egil into peril, even if it is to deliver the world from danger...

Hmm. Then why don't you try to stop Agnès from facing danger, Tiz?

Because I know that no matter what, Agnès would just go off on her own.

And I promised Agnès that I'd stay at her side. To be there to protect her...

Tiz...

Well, there's your answer.

Huh? What do you mean?

We'll go together with Egil. Tiz will protect him. We all will. Right?

......

Please let me go! I want to see the fire vestal's wishes carried out!

Got it! Thanks!

Oh, um...

Huh? What?

:allears:

A strong point of this game is that past events aren't shrugged off. Instead of 'my village was destroyed and oh well, time to have an adventure', PTSD is a thing. When the past affects a character's decisions moving forward, it adds meaning to their losses.

Tiz is always going to remember Til. Agnès is always going to remember Olivia. But at least now, despite the stress-induced arguments, they can help each other stay on their feet.

As the party takes the last stretch of road to the mine...

...Yeah, yeah. I hear you. Quit nagging me already.

Nag--!? And this, after you lied to me, you pip-squeak!

I'm telling you, I never lied. You didn't ask, so I didn't mention it. That's all!

Ohh, I don't need to take that kind of back talk from you!

And I'm a lot bigger than you. You're the real pip-squeak.

What was that?

Nooothiiing! I didn't say a word.

Honestly! And what kind of attitude is that? And to a cryst-fairy, no less!

Agnès, are you hearing this!? Egil is being horrid! Agnès, please!

...... Airy, he's a child. Please do not be so immature.

Right? Right!? Ha ha, you heard her, Airy. Pfft heh heh heh...

Oh, you little--!

Edea! Ringabel! Tiz!! Somebody say something!!

Hang...in there? I guess?

......

Maybe if you hadn't mentioned sacrificing the kid earlier, the others'd be more sympathetic.

Just as the party's about to enter the mine, the magical mail system keeping them in touch with Norende delivers a new message.

[img]https://lpix.org/2703269/agnes_happy.png[img][/img] It's thanks to your hard work, Tiz!

Thanks, Agnès.

At first, I had no idea where to begin. It felt like grasping at clouds...

But you did not merely stumble on blindly toward your goal of rebuilding Norende. You chose how to grow the village, how to breathe life back into it.

Norende's success is thanks to your clarity of vision, Tiz.

Absolutely. It's super important to have a firm goal to strive for. I always wanted to get stronger, but no amount of good intentions got me anywhere.

Then I put a note on my mirror that said, "Do 100 pushups!" and every time I saw it, I did.

[img]https://lpix.org/2703269/agnes_happy.png[img][/img] Edea, that's amazing!

And you've certainly grown stronger for it.

I have the bruises to prove it. Really, please, stop working out...

Er, ha ha...ha... Whoops.

Still, Norende's finally come this far! I couldn't have done it without you all.

Then let's make sure we work just as hard until it's done!

Right!

That first Ringabel line is probably a game typo and was meant to be spoken by Tiz.

Tiz stops Egil just inside the mine for another lecture.

I will. I know this place like the back of my...

Whoa!

Egil jogs away.

What!?

Before Tiz has a chance to follow, Egil runs back.

This isn't the time for that, Egil. You've got to stay with me, okay?

Oh, come on!

Finding this can mean the difference between eating or not, you know? It's a precious find.

Let it go, Egil. The war will be over soon.

Then you won't have to worry about finding mythril anymore.

When we find some of this, we get eggs with our dinner. It's my lucky day!

This bodes well for the rest of the trip. The party continues on.

Hm? Are you alright!?

Yeah, sorry. Just stumbled a bit.

My eyes haven't really adjusted.

All the more reason to be careful where you step.

You know, when you think about it, the moon's way better than the sun.

What makes you say that?

The moon shines when it's dark out, so we can see at night. The sun only shines during the day when it's bright anyway.

Ah ha ha, it's bright during the day because of the sun, silly.

And did you know that the moon only shines because of the sun's light?

Whoa, really? Huh... The moon only shines because of the sun...

I guess that makes sense. It must be really grateful!

Grateful? How so?

Because whenever the sun is tired, the moon fills in for it while it rests!

......

Egil's mischievous but a good kid. He's also, as the party is learning, socially and educationally stunted thanks to the whole slave miner thing.

It's an easy guess where we're heading, based on what we saw while rescuing the canary boys. To the lower floor, at the northern end.

The Adventurer and sealed door were a bit of a giveaway.

Egil goes over to the rocks right of the sealed door.

As the party waits, Egil worms his way through to the other side, out of sight.

Okay? Here I go.

*KA-CHUNK*

Egil, being an eight-year-old, squirms back through the hole to the party rather than taking the newly opened door.

Whoa, I felt a blast of hot air...

The Temple of Fire must be down here. Let us hurry.

Going into an active volcano? Best mood Airy's been in for a good while.

The Adventurer's concern is appreciated. Let's show we care by buying some new stuff from Norende.

Unfortunately, its powers only apply to the mostly dead, not to those killed by plot. The great sage must've had a secret method not passed down with the staff.

How cute! The maker's mark says "Sanrio". Must be a new Florem brand.

I haven't been showing off weapon/shield models because most are boring and the screenshot count's already so high, but this one's pretty good.

Lambent means glowing. A metal hat that amplifies lightning. This seems safe.

Cura without speccing White Mage can be handy.

Plus, despite its gaudy look, it's not a bad shield. Bonus for the center gem being heart-shaped. Perfect compliment to the magical girl bow.

Shopping's done for now. Onto the volcano!

Good news is no one else has been through here recently.

The Black Blades would have needed the help of a little kid like Egil to get through, and no one on their side bothered to gain Egil's trust.

The Temple of Fire is...that way!

Great! Way to go, Egil!

Heh heh. I only know because the fire vestal told me. It's nothing special... I bet you're glad you brought me, though, right?

Yes, yes. Let's get going.

There's no facial expression for it, but during Tiz's final line there he sounds like a happy older brother. From what little we saw of Til, he and Egil seem to have a lot in common. Clumsy and enthusiastic.

Edea's line about a 'blast of hot air' may be an understatement. Magma chambers are slightly hot.

Also, note the giant boulder blocking the path leading left.

But not to worry. Intense heat, pressure, and chemicals that would instantly kill normal humans are no match for the party's sheer force of will!

As with Miasma Woods and Florem Gardens, the Underflow has an environmental gimmick.

The dark, uneven-colored areas will periodically heat up, glowing in their intensity.

Even the party's sheer force of will has its limits.

Yeowch, that's hot! A guy could get burned...

Forget burned. A person could get dead if she's not careful!

Have a close look at the magma. It seems the ground is suddenly rising and falling in temperature.

So as long as we time it right, we should be able to cross unharmed!

Hmph, I don't know about that.

Even if the magma cools, my heart still burns like a hundred--

Look there! The ground is cooling off!

You're right! And awfully fast, too.

[img]https://lpix.org/2703269/agnes_happy.png[img][/img] It's almost room temperature now. We should be fine.

Like...a hundred...

Come, Ringabel. Quickly! While it's just sputtering uselessly!

Sputtering? Uselessly...?

Don't take it personally. Now, let's go.

Er, right...

By this point, Agnès is taking Edea's lead and wising up to Ringabel. Hard for a man to get his groove going when both women in the group refuse to play along.

In great RPG thematic tradition, the enemies here are mostly fire-elemental. The party proves they can withstand over 451 degrees farenheit.

Ringabel keeps the journal stashed safely away from the flames.

Recolor of one of the first enemies in the game.

Angry and highly territorial.

Lastly, a minotaur. Not fire-related, but it is a zombie.

At some point, someone dumped a bunch of minotaurs into a volcano and then, after they died, performed necromancy on them. Makes sense.

A large percentage of the floor is hot/cold magma. You can either be patient and wait for your safe crossings, use the Freelancer ability to stop environment damage, or turn off random battles and repeatedly set the party on fire.

Contrary to what you might think, the path onwards leads up.

A magical defibrillator! Explains why it'd only work against magically induced insta-death and not, say, death from a hundred sword cuts.

As the party makes their way further up...

Egil falls behind, gasping.

Are you getting tired, Egil?

Yeah, it's hot down here...

Let's take a little break, then. That okay with you, Agnès?

Oh, okay...

Hey, Egil. What will you do when the war ends?

Hmm... I don't know.

Isn't there anything you're passionate about?

I'd like to go to military academy. Then I want to be a guardsman for the Shieldbearers!

My mother and father died noble deaths protecting the top Shieldbearers.

Is that so...

But I guess I need to find a place to live before that. I have no home to go back to now...

After my mother and father died, my grandfather took me in. He was really kind, but he got sick and died soon after.

I had nowhere to go, and then I ran into some Swordbearers who were rounding up orphans. They took me to the mythril mine...

I see... You've done well to survive on your own.

Heh heh. I guess I have.

Egil's now recovered, so they move on.

Next floor has the same old paths. And look, treasure dead ahead!

Wait.

Okay, so much for that way. Several of the passages will sink just before Tiz sets foot on them.

As the party fumbles thier way through unstable magma pits, Egil slows down again, exhausted.

Are you thirsty, Egil? We should rest a bit.

Yeah, sorry...

I have to keep my promise to the fire vestal. I don't want to run out of steam before then.

You hold the fire vestal dear, don't you, Egil? Your faith in Crystalism is strong for such a young boy.

Well, my mother and father were followers. I'm not sure what I believe in yet...

The teachings of Crystalism are a bit over my head... I don't really know what to make of them.

Then why do you brave such perils?

Because I made the fire vestal a promise. That's all.

She always looked so sad in my dreams. I just want to see her smile for a change.

Airy rouses the party.

More fake pathways later...

The party reaches the other staircase. Once again, the dungeon's following the two floors up, cross to other side of map, two floors down layout.

In the latter half of the volcano area, new friends show up.

This demon looks like the owlmen who serve the summons.

Doom + other status effects make the two enemies pretty nasty when paired together.

I almost got killed by them. Luckily a holy compound thrown by Tiz saved the day.

Stronger monsters means better treasure.

Better treasure means more interesting weapon designs. As such I'm going to start showing off the worthwhile ones.

This was probably carried over from the Temple of Fire. Maybe it was used by a proto-Shieldbearer back in ancient times, or one of the vestal's attendants.

There've been no other signs of bird imagery, but this could be a reference to the infamous bird of fire which lives, dies, and lives again: the phoenix.

Also likely from the temple. This has the highest physical attack of all the staves. Staves are a highly effective melee weapon early on, but they top out early.

Neat thing about the pathways sinking:

The map changes to reflect their disappearance.

Down another floor, there's only one way for the party to go.

North and south are blocked by boulders.

As they continue onto the path ahead of them, Egil pauses.

Tiz looks across a lake of magma towards the north.

I wonder if that crevice leads into the temple.

*RUMBLE RUMBLE*

The earthquakes are getting stronger. Watch your step! If you die here, Agnès, the world's last hope will perish with you.

I know...

*RUMBLE RUMBLE*

The ground's collapsing under us! Run!

Ringabel runs off. Tiz follows. The ground near Egil shudders.

Ah!

Egil stumbles back, then trips. He's the spitting image of Til, all right.

Edea dashes forward, followed by Ringabel.

I'll get him!

Egil slips, begins to fall...

With Tiz catching him just in time.

Edea and Ringabel run over to help...

...but the ground is too unstable to pull Tiz up.

No! It's too dangerous!

Airy...

Your life belongs to more than just you now! I know it's hard, but stay focused on your mission!

I...

I...!

The earthquake continues,

the platforms around the party tipping and falling, one by one.

In the shaking, Tiz's handhold loosens.

In a glance, Agnès assesses the series of sinking platforms near Tiz and Egil...

And makes up her mind.

Tiz's grip breaks away. Despite his best efforts, he and Egil begin to fall.

Agnès catches him with not a moment to spare.

I'm not going to let go!

But we could both end up falling...!

Agnès slips forward, a cascade of rocks falling into the magma beneath them.

Just when it seems hopeless, she's pulled back.

Agnès!

Tiz!

As Edea and Ringabel pull the other three onto the platform...

The earthquake finally comes to an end.

"You can't die here, Agnès. Your life is too important."

Probably a good reason for her to save her friends, then, given that she'd be up against the rest of the Duchy and the Crystal Beasts alone otherwise.

Well maybe we shouldn't have brought the inexperienced kid into an active volcano

Airy is kinda obnoxious and defying her makes me happy.

We gazed into the eyes of madness... And all we found was horny.

Yeah, she started out decently enough, but she just becomes more and more obnoxious with her "duty above all else" shtick this chapter.

Hey, heads up. I'm about to unleash my rage.

This. THIS is the scene that made me love Agnes. This scene was just great, showed off a change in Agnes' character.

Hereby it is manifest that during the time men live without a common power to keep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called war; and such a war as is of every man against every man.
Fun Shoe
This scene is very revealing, both of Airy and Agnes.

Jack in!! MegaMan, Execute!
It's a good turnaround scene after all of the tension between the team since Chapter 2's end.

It was a pretty great moment for Agnes, although I don't quite feel like it deserved it at this point

Egil being a nothing annoyance for an hour or two of game time at this point probably flattened my enthusiasm
