My absolute fav moment from a largely wonderful first 100 issues is the story where Cobra trick the US government into detonating a megaton's worth of explosive in the Gulf of Mexico to destroy a sham bunker on the sea bed, resulting in an earthquake that drags a big chunk of land up above sea level. Cobra immediately stake a claim on it and send in a squad of lawyers to the UN for official recognition as a sovereign state, which is granted. It ends with CC gleefully remarking that if you have enough money and buy the best lawyers, you can do anything you want while the Joes dejectedly slink off with their tails between their legs.

Well that's great and all but wouldn't the US just immediately invade because they are housing a known terror organization? Like blatantly hoisting their flag?

I seem to recall that Cobra had lawyers and diplomats waiting at various embassies to get diplomatic recognition and treaties in place to help prevent the US just steamrolling their new island. I think maybe they even joined the UN but it's been a while.

Now I want to see what the COBRA equivalent of the Bill of Rights looks like. Actually, that's an angle I don't know if COBRA has tried yet - Get themselves declared a sovereign nation and then try and tempt away American citizens with promises of free guns and ammo, no EPA, no FDA, no DEA, no speed limits, no foreigners, and everyone speaks English. Isn't that lovely? And all we ask is that you swear allegiance to COBRA and fight and die for these freedoms.

Sarcasm aside, Hama was also writing in the late 70s/early 80s so in a lot of ways, the cultural frustrations he was riffing on in that way... got... resolved, if perhaps not in the way we might like.

For a bunch of AmWay/MLM scammers led by a failed used car salesman from an idea originally spun out from a prospective SHIELD vs HYDRA series, it's bizarre how cool and weird Cobra turned out. I still don't know or get why they palled around with a bunch of swamp dwelling bikers who followed a chameleon ninja and were paid in donuts and grape soda. And I love the nod to Doc Ock's origin with Doctor Mindbender. It's all surprisingly classic mad comics poo poo.

TwoPair posted:And disavowing is half the battle! G! I! Jooooe! You know, I just realized, the Street Fighter movie is a terrible SF movie, but it's a pretty awesome GI Joe movie. A multi-ethnic, multi-national group of soldiers lead by a team of specialists in color coded outfits, pitted against an over the top evil organization staffed by a loose consortium of varied specialists and lead by a man with delusions of grandeur. Said evil organization is involved in everything from kidnapping to weapons dealing, to scientific experimentation and slave trading. The most COBRA thing about the movie are the Bison dollars, which are going to be worth a fortune once all the rest of the world's currency is rendered useless because reasons. I'm pretty sure that was a COBRA plot from the cartoon.

On the contrary. Every Bison dollar will be worth five British pounds. That is the exchange rate that the bank of England will implement after I kidnap their queen.

Start a rock band and hypnotically control radio listeners to buy their album and attend their concert! Listen to the WHM Animation Damnation episode on this for maximum hilarity.
