Checking in.

Just wanted to say I've been working for a little more than a month and will be back to making GBS threads up the thread with my baby lawyer stuff after I get my bar results in November.

Hope everyone is well, especially Slyfrog.

E: Earlier today I started to agonize over an email to outside counsel thinking about whether it was written with the exact appropriate tone etc. then I thought of you guys and realized they would be billing time just for reading it. I immediately punched up something transactional and to the point and fired it off.

in HK you can hire (via official gov't channels) live-in maids, almost always Indonesians or Filipinos. They work 24/6 (Sundays off) and get 2 weeks off every 2 years to go home and visit their families before renegotiating for a new visa. It costs something absurdly low, like US$500/mo for an all-in-one nanny/chef/maid/gofer.

I've been asked for a resume from a recruiter. I have no interest in leaving the comfortable bosom of the government, but money. What does a private sector resume for a practicing civil litigator even look like? Does someone have an example/website I can look at?

Thanks guys. The big draw of HK for me is the great food and low cost of stuff like personal services, and the low taxes should make up for most of any differential in pay, but the high cost of stuff like housing and (apparently) the low base pay does make it much less attractive. I was always under the impression that UK at least paid as much as US but eh.
US firms in the UK pay their UK-qualified lawyers at US rates, but without the extra cost of living adjustments. In Hong Kong I think even the US firms still pay HK-qualified people less (and there's less need for HK-qualified folks than UK-qualified). If you're an American citizen a lot of the low tax benefit is irrelevant though, because of the US's worldwide income tax.

I believe even for Americans there is a signficant advantage, something like the first $100k goes in tax free. I'm not an American citizen and that's why I'm interested in Dubai and other places with no income tax.

You're transactional, right? I'd probably go in-house. The hours aren't as good as government, but I think there's more room for advancement.

Then again, if you just want to get out (wouldn't blame you based on the insane hours you're billing), I'd say go for it.

It's a unique opportunity that is not really law related - they just want someone with a legal background. Its a Harvey relief/rebuilding opportunity.

Legal resumes are pretty standard, as far as I've seen. Though that's almost entirely been reviewing law student resumes as they apply for summer jobs. Lateral resumes may vary slightly.

Header with name/contact info. First section is education and related crap (where did you undergrad, where did you law school, relevant academic awards or publications or involvement; this is obviously more important for law students applying for gigs than more senior folks). Second section is the reverse-chronological list of jobs you've done. Bullet points under each for relevant experiences, skills, clients, etc.

So like: Deputy City Attorney
- handled over 600 traffic cases per year
- tried 200 cases against pro se litigants
- responded to _____type of motions for summary judgment
- extensive experience with zoning decisions and appeals, land use decisions, plat applications, blah blah blah
- whatever man i don't even know
- taco truck permitting decisions and appeals

The lateral resume difference is my big concern. I've been licensed 5 years. My prior resume was just "litigation attorney, practice in family law, housing, etc." Bare bones is what my agency required.

Do firms for laterals want something more detailed, like what you wrote? Or a one pager?

A lateral resume basically should eliminate any non-law job (nobody cares anymore what you did before/after college) and should focus heavily on your specific experience from your previous work and what specific stuff you've done. Like, you drafted motions, took depos, etc., since some associates have gotten to do things that develop useful skills and some have reviewed documents for four years. Also, the type of cases you've been on, with details if those are public and with generic descriptions (i.e. "large pharmaceutical company") if not.

Unless you have very good things to put into it (after only five years you probably don't), one page is sufficient. I always had good success with this format
