Are fetish commissions something nobody should ever do solely for money? If an artist who took fetish commissions burnt out but then started hating furries and/or fetishists and railing against them, what would you think of them? BiggerJ fucked around with this message at 11:52 on Oct 5, 2017 |

I'd say no- don't do them only for money. I think that's probably why I burned out on commissions, fetish and otherwise altogether for a few years. I'd feel bad for them, tbh. I'd understand it, but I'd hope that they'd get some therapy and work through what was hurting them. Personally, I don't hate furries or most fetishists. They're just people with kinks and they're allowed that. It's when they get other people involved without consent or when they fetishize things I consider abhorent (incest, pedophilia, rape, bestiality, etc) that I tend to shy away from them. Of course, there's also people who are just assholes regardless of their fetish.

Thanks for the thread, its been an interesting read! What percentage of your clientele did women make up? Were there any general differences you noticed in the types of requests from men verses women?
|
# ? Oct 5, 2017 21:03 |

Generally I didn't ask people's gender/gender identity, but mostly it was like 98% men, 2% other genders. When I did get requests from women/nonbinary folk, most of them were primarily focused on the interaction of their fursona with whatever their fetish was- more pin ups, less fuckcomics. Men tended to just want straight loving, and they tended to push the fetishes past the point of... idk, "tastefullness"? It was very rarely when a non-male person would request, say, a cum golem or someone being hosed so hard they exploded or whatever.

What advice do you have for people who do fetish art commissions? What kinds of people should do them, and what should people ask themselves before they start?
|
# ? Oct 6, 2017 05:55 |

The best advice I can give is to not make my mistakes: don't do things you're uncomfortable with. If doing a commission makes you feel uncomfortable or disgusted at any point, stop the commission, send any money you have already recieved back, politely apologize and don't accept those in the future. If you force yourself to do them, not only will you burn out but you'll also hurt yourself mentally. Second, always Cover Your rear end. People can and will be shits- make sure you get an advance up front, make sure you never send them the finished product before you're paid in full, and make sure you get everything in writing. People will try to stiff you. Anyone can do fetish art, it's just a matter of what you feel comfortable with. Be friendly, positive, and non-judgmental (to their faces, what you think is your own deal). As for things to ask yourself- what can you realistically do? What is your time worth? How much do you expect to make per hour of work? What do you feel comfortable with? How much time can you devote to it? Figure out your plan if the worst case scenario happens- what will you do if you get doxxed? Most of it's just common sense tho.

I'd actually just thought of the risk of doxxing or otherwise being discovered. Have there been any cases of fetish commission artists being found out by friends, family, significant others and/or potential employers?

BiggerJ posted:I'd actually just thought of the risk of doxxing or otherwise being discovered. Have there been any cases of fetish commission artists being found out by friends, family, significant others and/or potential employers? Oh yeah. Like I posted earlier, it's not uncommon for people to get angry at an artist for some reason or another (refused to take the commission, wouldn't do commission for free, appears or identifies as female/nonbinary, doesn't want to gently caress client...) And attempt to doxx them. I've known a free artists that had to quit because of it. Luckily, I haven't been. I think it helped that I was very open and therefore doxxing me wouldn't have done anything to my social life.

Questions on the logistics on drawing fetish porn: You can find reliable picture libraries andd communities for animals, people, machinery, plants andd buildings for regular graphic work and illustration. You can find all kinds of tutorials and troubleshoot help for animation and webdesign. Is there something similar for fetish art? Reliable photostocks of duck dongs from all angles in 4k resolution for reference? Movecharts for letting your fourheaded anthropromorphic trousertitan gently swing in the wind? Did you and fellow artists in your mentioned circle gave troubleshoot advice, when somebody ran into technical drawing problems? (NO links, please.) Not in my experience. Mostly, it's just a lot of Google image searching and figuring out what your client can whack it to. If you have other artist friends in the community they'll usually give you advice if you need it but primarily it's advice like "the shading on the dickhead looks weird"

I did some figurative studies in college and learned correct human anatomy, but at the same time i cannot say i would not feel confident with that background about drawing convincing or arousing human vanilla porn. (Which has its own weird exspectations and exaggerations.) So i was wondering about, if one had to do any addditional reading material (or am i just a boring and unimaginative goon. ) Sorry. Just to explain where i was coming from with my original question. Stuff was already answered. Thanks.

pretty much constantly on that second part. bronies were probably the worst, because if you happen to draw, say, a pony that is the same color as their ORIGINAL PONY DO NOT STEAL then obviously you must be stealing art/ideas. how you can steal an idea, I'm not sure.

Is this something you checked for/cared about? The acquaintances I have in furry fandom have mentioned some crazy drama storms involving people assuming popular characters are community property.

Anecdotal but a close friend of mine is a fairly popular furry and he gets his character stolen/borrowed every 3-6 months. Most of the time it's just taking the art for icons, roleplay, etc I think it's pretty rare for people to straight up commission other people's characters. He always gets really frustrated when it happens, it's pretty funny

I basically had a thing up on huge display on my page stating that 1.) I would not draw someone else's character for you to take as your own and 2.) if someone managed to commission me for such, that it was not by my doing and that I was not responsible. I also made a point of taking down any ones that were found. Gonna play the devil's advocate here- for a lot of people in the furry community, their fursona is a way to escape or express themselves in a safe way outside of what they can IRL. For a lot of them, it's a secondary version of themselves. There's a huge interlap between the LGBT+ community and the furry community for this reason. I can understand why they'd get frustrated. On top of that, having your art stolen is pretty lovely and sucks a whole bunch too, from that side of things. There's not really much you can do about it, but finding out that your art has been stolen is always a lovely feeling. Lead out in cuffs posted:I've just worked through the thread, and thank you so much for sharing. I'm also super glad you got therapy -- that sounded like you experienced some pretty nasty boundary crossing. Haha holy poo poo. And yeah, I had to go into therapy for other reasons, but the boundary crossing was one of the reasons. On top of that, a lot of the things I did commissions for exacerbated issues I already had, and it just wasn't mentally good for me over all. As a result, if I do ever get into drawing fetish art for money again, I'll make sure to only do things that I'm okay with, instead of just going for the money. Luckily, I don't think I'll have to go back to it any time soon. Honestly, I've said it a few times in this thread, but it bears repeating. If you're getting into the fetish art scene to make a living, set your boundaries and stick to them. Don't compromise your mental health or safety for the sake of making money. It's not worth it. Make sure you ask yourself going in what you're comfortable with, what you're not comfortable with, and make sure you ask yourself that throughout the course of your career. Your boundaries may change, and that's okay. Please take care of yourselves. That said, if there are people in this thread wanting to get in on that, make a furaffinity account, be active, be friendly, and be prepared to do a lot of work for little pay off as you start out. Also oglaf is a good comic and everyone should read it.

Funnily enough, he's actually the token straight male friend in my circle of queer woman and nb people, and half of why he gets frustrated is because everyone who steals his character immediately turns it into "XXX ERP HORNY FUTA WITH TIGHT HOLES LOOKING FOR FAT COCK" roleplay accounts (not a joke, for the record). The other half is because as you said, his character is an idealized version of himself and having other people use it is uncomfortable at best

I remember seeing two other threads on Ask / Tell that were similar to this one. One was a goon who supplemented her income by selling erotic stories on Amazon/Kindle. The other made and sold bespoke dildos. How do you think this compares? Do you think what you ended up doing was the easiest or hardest out of the three of them?

I'd say they're all equally difficult, but in different ways. If you did art like I did, you don't have to worry so much about supplies or anything, but you will have to deal with the bullshit that comes from catering to the lowest denominator. Dildo-making is difficult and requires skill and supplies, but mostly (as far as I know) don't end up getting stalked or sexually harassed. Writing is difficult (I am trying to write a book, it is not going well) and writing good smut doubly so. That said, mostly erotic authors are the least likely to be harassed. There's no real "which is the most difficult". That said, I have nothing but respect for people who make fursuits because that poo poo is so hard.
