Post a link if you do that here. I bet some other goons would post weird ads as well, it could be a pretty decent thread!

The short was TOO loving accurate to how those ads would always go. Also, it was 90s as gently caress to have a cartoon short each episode that was just "Captain, Hulk, and Dazzler merged with Thor get an apartment together."

Just read the first six pages of the Doomsday Clock thing, man. Why can't they just let Watchmen be its own thing? The Before Watchmen stuff at least kept it in its own continuity, now I guess it exists in a world with Batman and Superman and freaking Gorilla Grodd.

I actually tracked down and read a bunch of the modern industrial comics (Marvel and I think Dark Horse and DC have whole separate departments for them) and they're all pretty generic cut-and-paste, but the ones that really stuck out to me were the two ones commissioned by Triple A Baseball. The story of most of them is either HEROES: Oh hey, better stop these supervillains! [generic fight scene] HEROES: We won using teamwork! You know who else loves teamwork? Western Union! Go to them for a payday loan! -or- HEROES: Better stop these supervillains! [generic fight scene] HEROES: We always stop evil, just like new Hanes technology stops your undershirts from stinking! There's a secondary vein which is basically "oh no, there's some sort of supervillainy, we'd better stop it -- say, fresh-faced young adults who work for [Harley Davidson/Cisco/LG/Siemens/Gillette], I hear your company's innovative technology is almost as good as our superhero stuff!" and then the Avengers stop the Wrecking Crew from destroying the United Nations with the help of Cisco Telepresence or something. I kind of assume that's what this NGEN one is. The Triple A Baseball ones are exceptional because it's almost literally just heroes watching baseball and spouting marketing statistics. "I'm glad you talked us going to this TRIPLE A BASEBALL game, Ben! It's *Fantastic* family fun enjoyed by over three million households annually!" "And with an average ticket price under $25, even a struggling photographer for the Daily Bugle can afford to take in a game with his favorite aunt." "Why Peter, did you know that over one hundred and seventy Major League Hall of Famers have played for Triple A teams? I remember seeing those legends play as a child!" "And I'm Tony Stark! I am a successful businessman and I am impressed by how Triple A baseball has grown by over thirty percent in the past decade! That is good business!" "I'm Captain America, and as an AMERICAN I love that 74% of Americans live within sixty miles of a Triple A Baseball park!" "HULK CANNOT COMPLAIN THAT AVERAGE BEER COST UNDER FIVE DOLLARS AT A A A PARKS, THAT SMASHING DEAL" etc.

Man those secondary ads were the best. Anyone could churn out 'you know what gives me the power to punch Ultron in the face? Hot Pockets!' ads but it took a real gift to spend a full page where Batman and Superman in full costume hang around AT&T headquarters and explain how if you think about it the REAL super hearing comes from the new affordable family plan offered at your local AT&T store.

You're cosplaying as an ad from 2 years ago? That's a really deep cut.

I'm moving this topic here, because it's a very interesting idea to me, but way off topic for the thread I started talking about it in. We were talking about the idea of making comics that were physically similar to what someone in the 30's would be holding in their hands when they bought one new.FilthyImp posted:The big impediment would be finding a 4 color halftoning printing press similar to what was used in the era, right? Then you have to get a way to authentically prep the plates or however the hell you get a page printed, and finally you track down the pulp pages similar to the quality or composition of the time. You can't get sued for copyright until you try and sell the final product. Reprint something in the public domain if you want to mass print it. And again, it's been done before with vintage products like jeans or for something more recent, polaroid film. There has to be schematics for old printing presses, and some actual ones in physical storage somewhere you could restore.

It's not necessarily the press mechanics per se, a lot of what became the modern web press is similar to what was used back then in a mechanical sense. What changed was the film used for repro, the inks and how they were applied, and the half tone screen to deal with the former. There's some interesting advances outlined here, but they mostly focus on when certain fonts were introduced: https://printinghistory.org/timeline/
