I saw Archspire and I know I'm old now because I was bummed it was so goddamn loud I couldn't pick out a lot of the melodies. I still love the poo poo out of this new album though. They're coming back through in a little over a month with Origin but if I thought *Archspire* was an indecipherable wall of sound live, well....

I believe in earplugs but they also mostly block out the treble and mid, in my experience, and I was already struggling to pick that poo poo out amid the insanely loud low end.

Personally, my ears turn loud highs and mids into an indecipherable, hissy mess and that makes it much harder to discern anything when the low end gets loud.

Highs being loud cause discomfort after a few minutes for me because I went to too many shows as a dumb kid without earplugs and gave myself permanent damage, so music that is all mids and lows is hugely preferable to me.

Like, say, bolt thrower.

I keep meaning to spring for a molded pair for comfort's sake but I'm afraid that'll still leave me with a lovely 'house sound so bass heavy that all I can hear are my bones rattle' experience just like etymotics do.

So, I can't vouch for more expensive molded plugs, but the quality does get better as you spend a little more. I have a pair of Earasers and not only are they very comfortable, but they let more of the highs and mids through, and you can hear conversations more easily too.

I can also suggest using more aggressive, cheaper ear plugs but pulling them out slightly until you achieve a better mix without letting all that hiss back in. Understand you're compromising their protective value but it's still way better than nothing. The adjustments will be very slight, and you'll likely have to keep adjusting them since they're no longer fully inserted.

The generic heavy metal riffing at the start is.... not a good fit for them, honestly, but other than that it's definitely Keldian. I.e. smooth, catchy and pleasant to listen to.

The new remasters for Battalions of Fear and Follow the Blind are pretty good, but Night at the Opera sounds like poo poo. I have no idea why they couldn't have used the original or the 2012 version.

Put it like this, it is probably better if you don't know. Also rather bad vocals for singing in Swedish, sounds like a worse version of the singer in Dia Psalma or some other punk band.
But hey, better than Sabaton.
