Not to worry the last 45 minutes is a single take continuous shot of Luke jedi rampaging through the first order headquarters killing all the bad guys. Disney wants to clear the slate so that episode 9 can be Talladega Nights with pod racing.

It's the eyes (well, and his mouth) that make it look so bad. Since they're CGI it feels weird, because you've always been able to see Peter Mayhew's eyes behind the mask in the past. It's a little jarring. I went back over the trailer a few times at that spot because it just felt...off.

Hate to say it, but this trailer isn't really doing much for me. The fact that so many beats have already been revealed to have been taken straight from ESB and that the fate of a key character (Leia) is already a foregone conclusion has sapped a lot of my excitement. I love the visual element of SW, so it doesn't help that it's clear that the design direction of this trilogy in so many cases is also "take a design from the OT, mix it around a little bit and muddy it up" without actually doing anything interesting or innovative. The new AT-ATs in particular look more and more stupid the more we see of them. I can forgive cribbing so much for the reboot, but not the second instalment.

I still have faith that Rian Johnson has made something unusual and interesting within the framework of the standard Star Wars narrative, but my anticipation is growing more tepid the more I see.

This is the problem with most Disney movies/comic book movies. They take zero risks in any of the plots. Its like centrism but for cinema.

I don't know if its Disney as much as it is the overall concept that every franchise has to be extended as long as it's profitable. Your heroes can't die, they can't retire, and they can't do something the audience will find unforgivable.

This is why the MCU is never going to have the balls to adapt that storyline where Tony Stark is revealed to be a sex offender and the Avengers all have to decide whether to support him or not.

What all is being re-purposed from ESB?

Finn in the recovery pod is akin to Luke in the bacta tank.
Luke as Yoda doing the training bit on a watery world.
Walkers taking on a rebel base with a giant blast door on a white world.
Hard to tell, but looks like Kylo Ren is pulling a 'join me on the dark side' Vader moment with Rey.
Luke saying 'this is not going the way you think'a possible admonition to Rey jetting off before completing her training.
That bit where it looked like Rey was suspended and being tortured hearkens back to the Han Solo torture scene.

Additions/corrections?

Additions/corrections?
- The film is opening on the First Order discovering the Resistance base and the Resistance are forced to evacuate
- Introduction of a Super Star Destroyer
- Kylo extending his hand to someone seems like a parallel with "join me and we'll put an end to this destructive conflict"

Thought the Dreadnought appearance could be a throwback to the Super Star Destroyer but didn't know how much of a reach that might be. Seems perhaps not much of one.

Trailer looks interesting, should be better than TFA although megasuper-stardestroyer/B2 Bomber and Gorilla Walkers has me worried that the First Order just somehow are way bigger than the empire ever was because they have a shitload of new tech.

Honestly, even if all these things are the case, I'm more focused on the execution than whether we've seen some version of a plot point before. Like, the problem with Laser Moon III in TFA wasn't that we had yet another Laser Moon, it was that the movie did absolutely nothing interesting with the parallel other than calling attention to it with a bad joke. ROTJ, for example, gets away with its Death Star IMO because it uses Luke's conflict inside to mirror the battle outside - the drama isn't just about getting to the exploding thing and blowing it up (as in ANH), but also about Luke having to win his own physical and spiritual battle at the same time.

Say Rey has some sort of vision of poo poo going down and leaves Luke to take care of it, which seems likely from the trailers. You can make that parallel mean something: have Luke reflect on his own history in a similar situation, show how Rey's approach and Luke's differ, something like that. Or you can just have it repeat the plot point beat for beat. The former is what the PT does well, I think, while the latter is the last act of TFA.

WTF Chewy and his eyes are most definitely not CGI. He's being played by a younger guy now who has taken over from Peter Mayhew who physically can't do it anymore.
