I've been studying SQL/Python to switch professions, and was applying to other firms, but now I'm somewhat tempted to ride out the next 3-6 months.

My job is pretty great except the salary. Which as it turns out is a pretty important part.

Learn GIS if you already know SQL and Python. You will have a job forever and the money gets decent once you've had some experience (heck, I made 52k at my first job so not bad by any means). I'm trying to get into a masters program this year so hopefully in a couple years I'll break the 100k mark.

e: there's the database side and the analysis side. Oor you do both if you're lucky like me!

But you're right that seems a good way to both facilitate my education and also leverage existing talents. You handsome man you. Do you work in Golden? They got a heckton of GIS jobs.

I live in the Bay. Lots of jobs here but it's insanely expensive. Thankfully my current one is kind of in the boonies so I was able to move out of Silicon Valley. The main thing to remember with GIS is you can literally work for any industry so don't be afraid to apply for things even if you aren't experienced in that particular subject. If you are capable, they will train you.

Yeah, cellphone or wind tower tech, field inspector for bridges and fracking sites, disaster recovery foreman will easily net you 100-150k. I know bridge painters who make 1k/week clear, but all of these jobs involve travel

I just lost the company's best carpenter to an outfit that installs pre-fab lead panels in MRI and x--ray labs (already encapsulated in plastic, so very little chance of exposure) that will pay him 3k/week

Yeah, it was a bad time for them. To answer about the pivot to renewables, theorectically, I could have been hosed. I stayed at home to be with my family, but the opportunity was there. Sometimes you get lucky, but there's always risks with big money jobs

I respect that but this is exactly why we need more good people in the business world. There are too many assholes and now regular people think all business opportunities are going to consume their soul. There's some genuine good that could be done in this country if the business community were filled with better people. Barring that, there are some great things you can do on your own.

I'm working on a business plan with a friend for a p2p payday lending service entirely designed to give reasonable rates and gently caress over the evil payday loan industry. I've got another friend who's helping a former DoL staffer build out a plan for a coffee shop based entirely on being socially responsible with their labor force. Good poo poo exists.

After my finals over the next week it should chill out for a bit and I can start looking at summer internships, which I haven't done much for yet. Just gotta make it though this first semester to knock out the core classes and it's off to the lovely world of electives.

It got that bad in minutes. There were areas that were rapidly circled by fire. The fire started at like 2 AM? My mother in law didn't get a knock on her door till 4:30AM, and she was immediately adjacent to the evac zone. Rescue crews were working frantically all night, and a lot of crews were driving right through poo poo like that.

There's gonna be a ton of corpses turning up in the next few days. There were wind gusts above 60 MPH, super high fuel load, dry conditions, and although nobody is saying it in earnest yet, it's pretty suspicious how many fires started at the same time, in those conditions, with no thunderstorms to set anything off.
