I backed the John Avon un-art playmat kickstarter so I'll be using beautiful land art playmats moving forward. For now I'm still using my Magic Origins Champion mat. I also have a half dozen "loaner" mats for when I bring cube to play with casuals.

Magic Story Huatli and Tishana team up to find Orazca in order to protect it from the Vampires. Magan, Butcher of Vona is a total psycho who just likes drinking blood and is trying to get to Orazca because it sounds fun. Mavren Fein wants to go there, but first he's gotta murder some people and drink their blood because the vampires go crazy when they don't drink blood. They're looking for Saint Elenda the first vampire of the Totally Not Catholic Vampires. Jace and Vraska escape the ship and then take a peaceful gondola ride together underneath an invisibility cloak: Vraska tells him about planeswalking and gushes about how cool he is while Jace stares into her eyes and wonders what her favorite dessert is. It was game 2, I won game 3 when I drew one of my few enchantment hate cards in my opening hand. I got lucky.

I have an old tan felt play mat that I've had since I was a kid. It has sides for both players, indicators for library and graveyard, and some sort of magic thing as a dividing line down the middle. Also I drew the mana symbols in sharpie on one side when I was a kid and they look awesome. I am SpittingSlug. I am still getting used to the weird interface. Most interested in practicing Standard or Limited, since that's the format I want to get in with. I'd rather catch up on a year and a half of Magic than 7+. E: I ordered the limited edition goofy cards. I figure I can either flip them, or I have a friend who's getting back in AND a huge transformers dork so it would be a good gift. And that dragon token is too pretty not to find an excuse to use. Are/were the invocation cards allowed in the draft format? I realize you could keep the cards if one was opened, but were you allowed to actually use them in a draft deck? My experience is that once introduced to that class of games, people will sometimes prefer to play them instead of EDH given the opportunity. The main reason they don’t is just loyalty to the WOTC brand but they offer a similar enough experience. There’s the resources and the engines. Change the art around if the theme bugs you I guess. The board game thread reminded me that maybe Innovation is the better analogue but then the complaint will be that it abstracts the resource management, when that’s the sort of thing espoused by “no attack, multiplayer solitaire” EDH gamers, the original focus of the discussion, anyway.  E: I mean people can play whatever games they want, and people who invest a lot of time and money into their EDH decks of course have resistance to the idea which I’ve seen. It’s a shame but eurogame themes by tradition tend to be dry, with the rare exception of stuff like Argent. But, to say that the mechanical and gameplay similarities aren’t there is ridiculous.
