Colonel J posted:(crosspost from the country thread, this one seems to get a bit more traffic and my question kinda echoes Pollyanna's above) Maybe some Friends of Dean Martinez? It's got some electric slide guitar but its pretty laid back and mellow. Has a southwest desert feel. Not really too folky though now that I've had more time to think about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rclo8S1NJ5w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9qRieKU0DE That album is excellent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFSokt1OUO0 me your dad fucked around with this message at 14:51 on Sep 11, 2017 |

I'm looking for some good instrumental folk/americana/alt-country/etc music. John Fahey, some Leo Kottke, and Tom Rush are along the lines of what I'm looking for, but I'd love some groups that are more than just solo guitar.

I really really like the song My Funny Valentine and want to know what I should listen to to hear more of that kind of thing. I have little interest in jazz that's improvised and free form, I'm looking more for the stuff that's essentially pop music with jazz chord progressions and instrumentation. I'm guessing there might be some good compilations out there of that kind of thing?

Because there's this music group thing called Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox who do exactly that. I'm looking for BOOK recommendations on Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, and related composers like Brahms. Specifically, I'm looking for analysis of these composers' musical inventions and developments and their impact on the field. I'm less interested in gossipy Lifetime-channel anecdotes about their lives, unless the anecdotes are extremely well-researched. Have you read anything along those lines about these composers?

My 9-year-old son loving loves both Guardians of the Galaxy soundtracks, but it's more than that - he just loves the 70s . It's not just because of the Marvel tie-in. He's been exposed to a whole gamut of stuff through his two older siblings' tastes and mine as well, and he's pretty clearly all about 70s radio rock - Kansas, Boston, Rainbow, but some soul and R&B as well. Not into Sabbath or anything too heavy (sadly). I'm looking for recommendations of other compilations/soundtracks that scratch the same itch. Already all over the Almost Famous OST, which has plenty of stuff he likes. Got Pulp Fiction as well, but I figure there are some collections out there I'm brain-farting, any recs appreciated. Thanks.

There's a series of compilation albums called The Best Seventies Album In the World... Ever! which might be worth checking out. I believe there are two. There are also four entries in the same series for the 60s, which are also good fun. They cover most of the big popular trends. As far as soundtracks go, how about the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack? It's great. Wheat Loaf fucked around with this message at 11:49 on Sep 26, 2017 |

I've been listening to a lot of Carly Rae Jepsen lately and I'm in the mood for some super catchy garbage pop. Specifically looking for full album recommendations where every song on the album is instantly catchy. I'm also looking for recommendations for quintessential pop albums.

does Lorde's Pure Heroine count, or is it not poppy enough? V yeah, i was surprised at how much i loved that album. listened to it this morning at work and followed it up with Metric's Fantasies and a couple of Phantogram albums, so those could be worth a listen, too (even if we're getting further away from pop) funkybottoms fucked around with this message at 19:54 on Oct 12, 2017 |

Looking for recommendations that are kind of like 'Nikes' or 'Seigfried' off 'Blonde' by Frank Ocean. Down-tempo, moving in on ambient/soundscape except it has some beat to it. Slow rapping ok, wandering/aimless yet somehow melodic vocals encouraged. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWgpBlz16-s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diIFhc_Kzng

James Blake for sure. Moses Sumney's got some of that going on. I'd also recommend King Krule's new album but a lot of that isn't exactly melodic since dude's got a voice like baritone sandpaper. New Corbin album as well. The Stand4rd's album would probably fit the bill (which had Corbin who then was going by Spooky Black).

I've got a bit of a tricky request. I'm looking for music like Jack de Quidt's who writes the music for Friends at the Table. Instrumental acoustic stuff with a lot of guitar, clarinets and piano and such, and some synths when they do sci-fi stories. Melancholic and longing and heartbreaking but occasionally energetic stuff that whisks you away.
