I finally got my fiance to watch a sci-fi movie after The Matrix (she's not a movie person, she wrote her dissertation on phenomenological consciousness and AI and as far as she is concerned everyone lied to her about how far into it The Matrix goes) and she adored Blade Runner, so hearing that 2049 is actually really good is heartening.

I want to say Albert Pyun's Nemesis, but I don't know if cyborgs mouseholing through walls with a .50 caliber machinegun counts as this.

Nemesis is also where the "shoot your gun into the floor and fall through a building" trope comes from.

Oh, and The Matrix counts as Morpheus is the one who throws himself through a wall to get a SWAT team member, who then turns into Mr. Smith.

Nemesis is an incredible movie everyone should see so I appreciate you bringing it up here.

For all the movies Albert Pyun have made that are really low budget or bad though, Nemesis looks and is awesome, but I have to question his decision on something. Like a lot of movies there was a making of featurette thing for this back in the day, and in it we see a part where a character is evading explosive gunfire on a rooftop, he leaps onto a storm drain to climb down the side of the building but because of all the stuff going on the drain de-attaches from the building and the stunt person stays at the top of it as the entire thing slowly tips off the side of the building while stuff is exploding and hangs onto it until just before it hits the ground and he jumps off. That's badass and this is all done in a single shot, it looks awesome.

In the actual movie it's edited in such way that it looks fake as poo poo. :laffo:

Everything else about the movie is awesome and flawless in every way.

There's a part where a young Thomas Jane is talked up like he's some super dangerous espionage guy that's not to be hosed with but then he gets his cover blown like a chump and is strangled literally one minute later. That woman in the trailer that says "He should DIE for what he's done!" Her characters name is MAX DAMAGE. How loving awesome is that. This movie rules.

In much the same way Radioactive Dreams (and not to mention Road To Hell) couldn't have happened without Streets Of Fire, Nemesis is unabashedly a love letter to Blade Runner. Oh, it's a rip-off alright, but Albert Pyun wears that on the film's sleeve.

He's also more boring as a person. After about 15 seconds of pontificating about angels from Wallace, I longed for the frank logistics of Tyrell. In the end, Tyrell was a monster, but a practical one. Wallace is the new wave of the techbro, self important monsters who believe themselves to be the new saviors of the universe.

He regards her as a product to be sold. Steve Jobs wouldn't sell an iPhone if he's already opened the box and messed around with it. It shows just how casually he disregards the rights of replicants.

Here's a question: was the girl in the memory center really sick? Perhaps her sickness was a lie meant to keep her out of danger. Of course, that would be a lousy thing to do to a person. On the other hand, if she was sick, could that mean that human/replicant procreation still isn't perfect? On the other other hand, maybe she was kept separate from the world because she was too good for it; she represents the next step beyond a dirty, prejudiced world.

I'm a little confused how she would have gotten from the orphanage to that point, either way (whether the illness was real or not).

If Im going to make one criticism its that I think Wallace is wasted in the film. He is obviously meant to be a take on/critique of the Elon Musk tech saviour type and I quite like Letos performance, its a potentially interesting character. But all he really ends up as is one scene at the start where he exposition dumps and another at the end where he pops up to remind you that he is kinda, sorta the villain. You could cut him out entirely and still have almost exactly the same experience. Which is a shame but even in a near 3 hour movie I guess some things have to give.

When you see it, you'll shit yourself.

To me the film not only was about "what makes a human a human" but also "what makes a woman a woman". The dichotomy between Wallace, and the way that he was attempting to view replicant women as purely reproductive organs, and the initial view that K had of women as a purely sexual object is interesting, especially when the story of K throughout the film is, in part, of how he attempts to find out about a potential motherly figure in his life, something that he never had before. I think I agree with some of the posts here that say that JOI and her relationships and status is the most interesting and important part of the film.

I agree that was probably the reason.

However is there anyway for them to tell that she is a replicant? The VK test wouldn't work on her because she had a real childhood. I also assume there wouldn't be any serial numbers on a replicant that was born.

Hard to say, but it's possible that she just likes him enough to do so. She wasn't ordered to bring K back or murder him, which gives her agency to do something, and a lot of her narrative seems to be punctuated with a longing for affection she knows she can't possibly get from Wallace but knows K has the potential to give, even if not to her. That's another reason I feel like she kills Joi both so she can display honest, pointless cruelty and in jealousy.

It's a very short the time between Rachel's remains being seized by Wallace and Deckard meeting the Clone Rachel. Given how rushed the schedule for of cloning, gestating, and memory implanting might have been it's a wonder that the Clone Rachel didn't explode like a Samsung Galaxy 7.

Perhaps she is the perfect person to be programming replicant memories for a revolution because her abstraction from the world leads her to appreciate the experiences she imagines for their meaning, rather than their detail (which she vocally disregards). That is, she understands ideology *sniff*.

I presume that you could identify replicants with a DNA sample. If not, some kind of deep tissue scan would reveal if someone has the muscle density of a cobra.

I really liked this movie but didn’t feel it needed to be so long. The slow pace made sense for the first movie which is more of a tone poem, but this one doesn’t have that same feeling, so you really felt it all. The best example is that I went to the bathroom during the scene where K is telling Joi he needs to put her on the portable thing, and it was still happening when I got back.
