There's this generally-otherwise-unremarkable idle game called Castaway Cove that does something a lot of other mobile games refuse to do. It has entirely different UIs (in terms of button locations) depending on if the device is on portrait or landscape mode, which it switches to on the fly. I dig that, as someone who usually plays games on his tablet for the larger screen size.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5xBUx8yTRY

Can everything about Superhot be my little thing? I love how they slapped the plot together for the game jam, and then just ran with it for the proper game.

It's also so wonderfully hostile with all its 4th wall stuff, which I find so refreshing after all the post-Bioshock meta-wanking the industry got obsessed with.

Every one of Pyre's characters is the best character, but the best of the best characters is Ti'zo, a tiny little imp who's also the strongest player in the game (he moves like greased lightning and possesses an instant-death field about ten times his size), completely adorable, and, the best part, the only fully voice-acted character.

That is to say, most of the cast communicates in brief voice clips in a made-up language, but Ti'zo talks totally in onomatopoeia that's interpreted by the player, and every one of his little squeaks, grunts, and chirps is fully phonetically rendered. The game doesn't recycle voice clips; it fully pronounces every line for Ti'zo and Ti'zo alone. And that's fantastic.

Pyre is such an amazing game and its soundtrack is just godlike (like all Supergiant games really). I love how they made variants for all nine factions in the game for the song Never to Return which also change in-game on whether you are winning or losing the match. the Dissidents version is the best one though no question :black101:

I need to get around to finishing Pyre and trying out more characters. I stuck with the starting trio for the whole cycle and with the game mechanics how they are I need to select a new lineup.

Adding on to the Pyre love, although in a far less meaningful way.

One of the characters, The Stowaway, doesn't have a set name. Instead, you get to "guess" it, from a selection. Her name is said to rhyme with Grey, and so all the names end with "ae", with each name having a tool-tip that makes some sort of comment. Most of them just kinda go "That sure is a name" but the last one just says "That can't be right, can it?"

The name in question?

You're better off just cycling through everyone, since different characters all have different interactions with the opposing teams.

Speaking of which - one team, the Dissidents, is a gang of punk-rock dogs with an appropriately thrashing theme song. One of your starter members is deep in debt to them, but early in the game he rallies and tries to go double-or-nothing with the outcome of the next game. The Dissident leader comes off as a raging rear end in a top hat up to this point, but if you win, he immediately goes "haha ok that was awesome, debt's off." But if you lose, he doubles the debt and threatens to go after your character's dear old mother to get the cash.

At this point you have two options - you can either save up to pay the debt yourself, or leave the poor bastard to his fate. If you don't help him, the Dissident leader's good to his word and sends a bunch of goons to raid the mother's house. She mistakes them for friends of her son and gives them tea and a nice lunch. The Dissidents then slink away and quietly cancel the debt.

Happened as far back as the 90s, with Star Trek: Elite Force. A legitimately good FPS, and you play as Ensign Alex Munroe. Whether Alex is short for Alexander or Alexandria, you choose at the game's start. What changes is one photo in Munroe's quarters. A lady squadmate flirting with you does not change.

Sad they didn't keep that for the sequel, though. Was the first action game where I was able to play as a woman and no one in the game thought it was at all weird that a woman would be leading this elite strike team.

The weirdest example of a developer going the extra mile for a gender change is in Deus Ex Invisible War. Early on in the game, your goal is to get into an apartment. There are a couple of paths in available to both genders, but only if you're male do you have the additional option of talking to the apartment's owner in a bar, where this happens:

I'm with you. It's interesting that something perceived as lazy before could now be seen as progressive. But I always wonder (Prey specific scenario)...that assistant who thinks you're hot whether you chose a male or female character. Is he bi or does his preference change in-game depending on what gender you choose?

You joke but I'm pretty sure that this is the exact reason why games (and cartoons, and comics, and every other nerd friendly piece of media) has way, way more lesbian couple than gay ones. It lets you look progressive and attract drooling fanboy shippers with far less chance of making the insecure boys in the peanut gallery uncomfortable.

E. That reminds me, the developer museum in God of War was great and one of the best tidbits was them getting approval to give the medusas tits but they couldn't give the cyclops a big floppy wang.

But you have to portray the lesbians as entirely there for men and performative, because if you dare to make a character an actual lesbian then their male fanboys get really upset at their waifu that they now see as unobtainable, even though she was fictional anyway.
Why yes I am thinking about Tracer in Overwatch :downs:
Not to go off on a political derail, but I think it's also because like you said, gay male sexuality makes straight guys uncomfortable. Those dudes get very upset if a man makes a pass at them, real or fictional.

To add content but keep in the same vein: I like that when you're playing as Ciri in Witcher 3, you have a conversation option at one point that makes her explicitly a lesbian - when someone else teases you about a boy having a crush on you, you can candidly just say "Oh, I like girls, actually."
No fuss or change in the gameplay at all, really. As a Gay it might be my favourite little bit of representation, because it has no bearing on her character at all. Just a nice Little Thing.

Ciri gonna get that witch booty just like her dad did :mrapig:

More of an aside than a thing, but I think it could be interesting for a game to focus not on Genre, but on Theme. Hypothetical Example: A game that starts with the trappings of horror but is actually about the unknown and discomfort inherent within it. The difference would come as the creature your trying to avoid/defeat specialises in illusions, first of all appearing as spooky as possible because it's easier.

Over time as the player finds notes describing the creature and naming it and talking about how it works it starts dropping the facade, stops hiding itself in the shadows and changes tactics - It knows that it isn't unknown anymore, so suddenly the level geometry starts getting weird as it starts loving with the game world itself, trying to keep the fear going by making the player no longer trust what they think they know about the game world. This could even remain unsettling in broad daylight, like you think you escaped the place, run towards the sunrise, only to find yourself running back towards the building. Eventually things escalate further and further until you are literally walking on the sunrise itself, no notion of up or down, inside or outside, all dimensions cease to make sense and the player just needs to stop the creature and knows how to, the difficulty would be getting there.

Just a thought that interested me, I was initially considering the problem of keeping something scary without relying on the usual horror trappings, and it developed.

There are plenty of games with a "sanity" or "fear" function that impacts your perception of the game world. Amnesia being the classic example.

In my experience, they end up leaning way too hard into horror and less into general unease about the unraveling of reality.

Heck, go play "The Stanley Parable" for a pretty good "the game itself if loving with you" type of game. A game like that, but with less humor and more existential dread is what you are talking about. But who'd want to play a game that made you feel that bad.

Maybe make a game based on DMT tripping and fractal machine elves pranking your tiny human brain? I don't know.

I God of War their reasoning for wanting to make the monsters anatomically correct was because they were feral creatures and not people, which makes sense considering Okami came out around the same time and Amaterasu had a butthole.
