There's a good list of goon-run hosts in the OP here. I've used Lithium before and have had no problems.

You should also look into a caching plugin if you really want it to be speedy. WP Super Cache was all the hotness last time I checked, but I don't tend to enable caching by default unless I really need to, so I don't have strong opinions.

Are their goon-owned, or at least goon-recommended, WP hosts?

Do you know anything about hosting? Do you care to learn anything about hosting? Do you plan to have just one WordPress site and nothing else on your hosting?

Depending on how static your site is, you can go with cheap hosting and cache the crap out of it through a CDN like CloudFlare to the point your site is "serverless"

Site will be pretty static. It'll be mostly pages that change once a year combined with a new blog post monthly.

As far as how much do I care to learn about web hosting - nothing.

I'd say just see whatever hosting has an automatic WordPress setup. I'd check out WordPress.org and see what they recommend these days.

WP Rocket is a decent and straightforward caching plugin, and it enables caching by default so there's not a lot of setup unless you want to tweak things.

Do you guys know any good tutorials on how to start creating your own themes intended for people who are familiar with html, css and javascript?

I tried googling but mostly run into absolute beginner guides focussed at people with no experience at all.

I haven't watched any of these videos except the REST api one but I did find that one to be helpful, maybe the others are good (tinyurl because linking to a Youtube playlist doesn't work here):

Lynda and Treehouse both have decent WP theme creation tutorials, if you wanna pay for them (you could sign up for Treehouse, do the WP tutorials, and cancel right after if you really want).

Does anyone know of a plugin that would allow logged in users to have a profile page they can edit (adding/modifying text and images at most) entirely on the frontend?

Rolled a 1 on the random encounter table, didn't you?
I run a podcast and the latest post is not showing in XML for some reason

http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/feed/podcast shows the latest episode (Belly of the Beast posted on July 20) when I look at it in Firefox, but the raw XML on chrome does not show that post. What is going on? iTunes and other podcasting apps are not showing the July 20 episode either.

edit: ARgh, it was WP super cache. I disabled it and now the XML shows the latest episode.

Maybe Ultimate Member Plugin? Seems a bit overpowered if you just want simple image/bio text though:

Yeah, I was looking at that earlier. I'm sure it would work, but it's definitely overpowered for my purposes.

Well well well
A client of mine wants to display Facebook reviews for their business on their website. I went looking for plugins and found a few that looked similar. So similar in fact that I think they're the same plugin:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/fb-reviews-widget/. (Paid version here: https://richplugins.com/facebook-reviews-pro-wordpress-plugin)

https://codecanyon.net/item/facebook-reviews-pro-wordpress-plugin/19287534

https://wordimpress.com/plugins/facebook-reviews-pro/

All list different authors and have seemingly different support channels. Did each vendor purchase the plugin from some other developer just to resell it? Do any of these look more reputable than the other?

Any ideas about the best way to build galleries in WordPress using Flickr albums? I have the images in Flickr because of the free storage and I want to create nice galleries to be displayed on a WordPress site. I see several plugins but I'm not sure if there is a good/recommended solution for this. I have looked at the juicebox plugin but it seems complicated/overkill. I just want a somewhat customizable and nice looking way to add galleries from Flickr

Well this is interesting, Automattic has dropped React due to Facebook legal stuff -

https://ma.tt/2017/09/on-react-and-wordpress/

Seems likely that Vue or Preact will take its place. I can't see this as anything other than great news, I never liked that they were leaning on React for the future of WP.

I'm trying to do move my Wordpress site to a different host, but running into an issue. I'm doing manual backup (compressing all site files into a .tar) then restore of my Wordpress page (I'm following the steps outlined in this YouTube video) under my new host.

I've backed up the site files. Extracted them to my new host's root directory in /var/www/html directory. But I'm getting a 403 forbidden error instead of the Wordpress.org installation prompt that's shown in this part of the video.

Any thoughts on why this might be happening? I realize that there are backup plugins out there, but I've had issues with them locking up on me, and it's really just my own preference to do a manual backup/restore instead of using a paid plugin.

Yeah, it just occurred to me that I might've been following the wrong tutorial. So I found this one about migrating a WP site to a new host, which is probably more in-line with what I should be doing. Will post an update once I've had a chance to go through all of the steps. Thanks, dudes.

UPDATE: Still can't get it to work. I followed all of the steps in the WP Migration video above, except now I'm getting a "Error establishing a database connection" error. I've double checked the DB name, password, etc. in my wp-config.php file. All looks fine. But the site still isn't working. Dammit. :suicide:

UPDATE 2: Fixed it. That line was missing the define('DB_USER', parameter. I must have deleted it by mistake. I'm up and running. :)

Ask me about losing 200lbs, and becoming the Viking God of W&W.
OK, so I want to change the default page that's returned when you click on an author's name. Normally, it's a list of posts.

I'd ideally like to link to a custom page.

For example,
When you click on the author name, you are directed here:
http://www.hemastrong.com/blog/author/chuckgrossgmail-com/

I want to replace that with a custom page, ideally through a plugin rather than playing around with customizing php files:

I think the magic words you are looking for are "author bios plugin". There's a ton out there, and the free ones are probably good enough:

I've never used any, and I'm not exactly sure what info you want to present, but based on plugin name I'd try either Sexy or Guerrilla.

Thanks. That does help. I'm looking to essentially make it so that when you click on post's author's name, it takes you to a custom page rather than the page that shows their posts only.

Those guys mostly let you define a template for the page with a GUI and most likely, shortcodes. If you're looking for "each author page can be wildly different or even user defined" that's probably going into the world of paid plugins, and for that you might have to dip into membership plugins.

What is the best way to get the id of the current page? I am using
code:
get_queried_object_id()
which appears to work just fine but not sure if there's a better way.

Scaramouche

Pretty much. It changes around a lot depending on if you're in the current page loop, if you're not in current page loop, if you're dealing with non-post pages (e.g. static pages, meta pages, admin pages, plugin specific pages). The caveat too is that if you are creating pages programmatically you need to make sure they're completely saved/assigned in the context you are using before get_queried_object_id will return a value. However it should work in all the contexts above, as opposed to get_the_ID() and $post->ID() which either fail on non-post pages, or if outside the loop. A fallback I've used is also get_query_var('page_id') which grabs it from the querystring, but obviously permalinks/url rewrites break this.

Can anyone recommend a decent events calendar plugin with the following features?

* an ok-looking default calendar page
* an "upcoming events" shortcode for use on other pages
* easily managable backend for clueless clients

If you just need to display events, I've used the free version of The Events Calendar on a couple of sites and been happy with it.

I used this free plugin to add a simple shortcode to use with it. The pro upgrade of The Events Calendar probably lets you do without it though.

If you want to take bookings and optionally payment, I've set up Team Booking which uses a shared Google Calendar for most of the heavy lifting, though the initial setup is a little fiddly.

The Events Calendar is the way to go for most clueless clients. If your client is a non-profit, you can apply for a free license of the pro version, which I've done a couple times now.

Thanks for the detailed answer. Currently I'm only using it for static pages to get some ACF fields.

I only came across this because I've been developing a theme with the Sage 9 beta, which includes a sort of MCV setup that encourages splitting logic into controllers, and it seems that the the controller needs to be fed the page ID for it to pull ACF fields properly, if it's not in the loop. On that note, Sage 9 and the way they've structured it is really great, and using Blade templates for all my views is really making me smile.

First, he created a Custom Post Type, and named it events. Then he created/modified the existing single post template for that custom post type to query the data fields from ACF.

You can try this plugin that makes it easy to make custom post types as well, from the dashboard:

I don't use it myself (I just stick my post type registrations in a plugin) but some people really like the ACF + CPT UI combo for making WP do whatever you want. Throw in Gravity Forms if any user input is needed and you've got the trifecta of "useful WP plugins."

Thanks I'll definitely try it. I'm basically setting it up so the client can post Products & Recipes and have them link to each other through categories. Usually I would just use WooCommerce, but they aren't actually selling anything online so I'm going the ACF route and learn some things on the way. :)

What is considered the current go to re-Captcha plugin?

My wife's wordpress site is running Wordpress 4.8.2 with Thesis 2.3,.

She was running WP-reCaptcha, but she was told that WP-reCaptcha wouldn't support the newer captcha standard and would have to change. I went and found the Google Captcha (reCaptcha) by BestWebSoft, which has a large install base and looks to be actively worked on, but once installed the re-Captcha isn't showing up.

Not seeing anything in the inspector. no captcha by the submit button. Click submit and then a new Error page that says I’ve “entered an incorrect reCaptcha value”, and to click the back button and try again. I’ll try some more later
