Both were true (the seps were being heavily manipulated; Dooku and Grievous were strong fighters)

The first order is basically like in a game of Starcraft 4v4 when you and your buds slowly wipe out 3 of the enemy but you haven't even seen the fourth yet until he suddenly shows up with max upgraded carriers and wins the game within 5 minutes...
