He told the BBC that she had been “raped, tortured and killed.” Adelstein’s assistant and another person identified “Helena” as Olivia Stelcer. When contacted in 2013, Stelcer in several emails confirmed that she helped Adelstein’s reporting in 2001, continued to live in Japan for 16 years, and that she wasn’t “murdered”. She said Adelstein continued to contact her, even as he told the public he felt guilty for her murder and lamented her loss. Edit: quote:National Geographic TV crew dubbed him “Jake the Fake” quote:But a few days before the crew left California, Adelstein called from Japan, warning them about “dangers” awaiting them in the shadows of Tokyo. He claimed that gangsters had broken into his house and beaten him up with a phone book. The veteran California crew were puzzled; who in Tokyo has a phone book. It became an inside joke for the crew. They laughed every time they saw a phone booth potentially holding a dangerous, deadly phone book. LOL. That website is a very long read, but it's like one giant meltdown thread compilation for one crazy weeb. Bajaj fucked around with this message at 17:34 on Oct 14, 2017 |

TsarZiedonis posted:Some of the US State Dept interviews with his old friends that Wikileaks released were really illuminating. They painted a picture of Xi as a highly intelligent, driven ladder climber. He apparently approached advancement inside the CCP power structure with a cynical, single minded determination, and ran his public life decades (education, marriage, public persona) as a coldly calculated mask. You have to remember, he rose from internal exile (his father was on the outs during the cultural revolution) to being the most powerful man in china. His friends that were interviewed described him as holding them in contempt for choosing personal pursuits (love, fun, financial security) over the pursuit of political power in the party. He essentially comes across as a less dramatic, real life version of Kevin Spacey's character in House of Cards. That's always been my read based on what's available, but I think it's interesting because I can see where he gets it, given what he has witnessed in China. For all this thread loves to poo-poo (or pooh-pooh) on traditional Chinese culture, modern Chinese hyperconsumerism is, if anything, way more depressing and represents an almost pitiful greed with no bottom. (I'm not saying the USA is any different.) It does feel like he has genuine contempt for that, but I don't know how he's going to be able to curtail it.

To be fair some of the hit pieces on Adelstein are probably not reliable and/or don't pass the sniff test, but he's also legitimately full of poo poo. I mean in a way good for him; westerners don't know poo poo about the mysterious orient so you can basically ride that pretty far if enough people buy your bullshit. Got him a book and on TV and all so congrats I guess. But he's apparently quite lovely to women, maybe including the "interns" from his alma mater he at least used to surround himself with. Hell if anyone wants to hear more from him just like hang around the Pink Cow or whatever in Roppongi, I saw him around there often enough. He only hires bodyguards to maintain that fantasy that the Yaks are after him when he goes to events and poo poo.

The original text is Korean and something like "Study hard or you'll have to work with your hands like him" "Study hard so you will be able to make a better world for him" The fact that both are particularly patronising and don't consider the street sweeper making the world more pleasant for the rich is not mentioned in the original Korean (of course)

(I'm not saying the USA is any different.) It does feel like he has genuine contempt for that, but I don't know how he's going to be able to curtail it. a large part of the reason people poo-poo china in this thread is because actual traditional chinese culture is twisted and suppressed by the current bullshit government if you look back over the 5000 years of history that people talk about to gain face, chinese history is marked mostly by periods of unusual liberty and urbanization (compared to the rest of the planet) leading to dizzying bursts of real innovation and eager pursuit of trade to spread (and profit from) those innovations the CCP is the most protectionist and butthurt government that china's had since the Ming dynasty, which managed to turn the world's only major economic engine into a virtual prison of autarchic beggars who were harassed for being born, harassed for dying, and harassed for everything in between face culture is a load of poo poo but if there was a more benign government in charge everyone would just make stupid jokes about it; beyond that, they'd get on with their lives. but since the CCP can be collectively anthropomorphized as a particularly spoiled 4 year old, face culture turns into a lot of dumb poo poo that actively hurts anyone who interacts with it. the root cause is the government and i don't think anyone would seriously argue otherwise, but their influence is real and there's no indication at all that Xi or anyone else in the CCP actively dislikes the status quo. greed with no bottom benefits them directly in a way it doesn't benefit the US government - which is probably why it is in fact different between those countries, socially. no matter how you slice it the USA is one of the most philanthropic countries on the planet, with ~2% of the GDP going to charitable organizations. israel is second at ~1.3-1.4%. if you only count time volunteered per capita, the USA is second (after the netherlands), but the USA is the only country to appear on the top five of both measures. the CCP profits from every worthless purchase and dumb thing that the common Chinese citizen does because they are omnipresent, and unsurprisingly, china rates almost dead last in both time and treasure volunteered because that omnipresence encourages the government to reward mindless poo poo without innovative ends in a way the united states currently does not and, arguably, never has.

Skylab came down in somebody's backyard in Australia, leading the town government to send NASA a fine for littering. Mir, obviously, came down in the ocean and Taco Bell did that target stunt. A Soviet spy satellite crashed in Canada sometime in the Cold War, which was embarrassing partly because its onboard power unit was a small radioactive thermal generator (pretty standard) and it scattered a low level of radiation over a wide area (so, not that big a deal at the end of the day, but the Canadian government was pretty sour about it). IIRC a piece of one of the Salyuts almost hit somebody in Argentina. China joins yet another international club here, basically
