I suspect it helped that the Dangan Ronpa playthrough crossed the release of Virtue's Last Reward, another death game related VN (and the Let's Play of 999, the prequel to Virtue's Last Reward). By the way, if they are taking the mick out of the fans they're not doing it by halves. Huge spoiler for Dangan Ronpa 3 ending: The DR3 death game turns out to be a reality TV show run by a group of fans of the Dangan Ronpa games who love it so much they'll volunteer to have their memories wiped and replaced with those of a wacky DR-like character and then play an actual death game on camera. There are no answers to any of the plot hooks from the previous games because they're also just fictional games in the DR3 world. or something like that anyway. The DR games are bad, sorry guys. The first one was neat because of the setting but then they decided that they could just keep remaking the same game with excuses about why anything is happening. DR4 is going to be a dream.

The zombie Frank gameplay in the Dead Rising 4 dlc is pretty dope and a fun change of pace from normal Dead Rising gameplay but the story is so irredeemably bad that it spoils the whole experience

I was sort of interested in these games for a while since I heard they were similar to Phoenix Wright but that art style is just insanely unappealing.

They made their basic premise way too complex and contrived. Like, Zero Escape series: random groups of people get selected, have to go do a puzzle room, then get given a bullshit logical paradox to solve and people get killed if they get it “wrong”. Dangan: everyone gets the run of the setting, to escape they have to kill someone else (thus creating a stalemate which the authors have to write around with very mixed competence), then they have to have a TRIAL which someone must organise and then horribly murder the guilty person if they are discovered. Also, talking stuffed bears. With that kind of basic setup it’s no wonder they’re stuck with ridiculous plots. Although that said in the side story game they didn’t have that and still managed to include peak bullshit.

The flashy, Battle Royale-esque themes/ambience is basically all the DR games have going for them, as the actual mysteries are laughable and the actual overall plots are convoluted and dumb in a way that would make Professor Layton proud.
