When I was 17, my father was so stupid, I didn't want to be seen with him in public. When I was 24, I was amazed at how much the old man had learned in just 7 years.
The Spurs are probably a good team to cheer for overall if you have no team already.

Revelry in the Dark

If you’re moving to Denver the Nuggets are a good choice since they’re on the upswing and have one of the best young players in the league in one Nikola Jokic; passes like a point guard but he’s 6’10

You could also root for the Sixers and erstwhile star but lit tweeter Joel Embiid and the gang

Yeah they're the official nerd/hipster favourite team this year tbh, they're on the upswing and play some weird but cool basketball.

This is a good time to hop on board. The Nuggets were one of the top offenses in the league last year. They play a fast paced, pass heavy style of offense that revolves around Nikola Jokic, who is a goofy, galumphing, completely unathletic Serbian weirdo that was drafted in the 2nd around and turned out to have franchise player potential. He's one of the best playmakers in the league and an extremely efficient post and midrange scorer. The Nugget offense revolves around him, which is pretty unique. Nuggets also just signed Paul Millsap who is a 4 time all star and an extremely versatile Forward who will help shore up their defense, which was godawful last year. Also, they're my team so they are the best team.

Here's a dope Jokic pass from preseason: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YF5lCmxouCg

1) don't move to colorado. its full. like all full. no room for anyone else. sorry

2) if you do somehow end up in the area, you could do a lot worse than root for the nuggets. the games are pretty cheap and they're typically a fun, albeit not particularly successful team. there's sadly not too much love for the team in the city, its more of a hockey town.

3) choose the spurs if you want the most professional team that will have a large amount of success and go on a deep run. plus kawhi will win MVP which is pretty cool

I like LMA, I think he gets underrated and a lot of hate, sure you can't always depend on him if Kawhi goes down but he's great as a "second star" to have.
would've rather gotten Marc Gasol but you can't win em all

LMA is continually defended as being fine and playing just fine by people in a season where he even admitted to half assing. I don't think that can be considered underrated

The Kawhi/LaMarcus Spurs are a championship-caliber team in any league where the Warriors haven't broken the NBA so keeping him is fine imo since all the big FAs the Spurs could have got in the next couple years like CP3, Westbrook, etc have found superteams somewhere else and are now off the market so an upgrade has now become impossible short of getting LeBron somehow or this Gasol-Gasol II someone was posting about earlier. I just thought he wanted out bad.

How does one go from watching your team play 16 games per year to watching ~100? It seems like you'd get bored of it midseason, or miss a lot of potentially great games, etc. Do you watch every game, or just when you're free, or what?

bandwagon the rockets, take a bold stand in favor of the following principles: gently caress defense, and game the rules. they're not even the best team, so you can bandwagon them safely.

Hawks signed Isaiah Taylor today. Rockets didn't extend Capela, though I didn't really expect them to.

I guess you start by watching your team play when you can because they're "your team" and you want to see them win or lose. You get to know the players and become emotionally invested.
Eventually you fall in love with the little things, and different players that aren't on your team. And you like it so much you watch as much of them as you can. You stay up late to watch random regular season games and spend your weeknights posting gifs with likeminded cool cats on a message board from 1999.

There is a special joy in knowing what the 14th man on your roster is good and bad at

There are several games most nights, so as long as you have league pass/illegal pirate streams handy you can just gravitate towards what is interesting. Which is also why posting in GDTs helps because otherwise you're never going to know when some Bucks Kings game goes into 3OT.

The best way to pick a team is to watch a random selection of games and find a player or team that looks fun to watch. Trying to slot yourself into a team before seeing them play seems like a bad idea. And to also not pick the Pacers.

Don't feel like you need to watch every game. Since your team plays 82, it's unlikely a few games will make a big difference like 1-2 games in the NFL can. I walk away from my team(s) for weeks sometimes and usually you can check box scores and get caught up. If you watch even half the games a team plays you'll likely have a ton of insight into all 12-15 players.

Also, NBA makes it really easy to coast around the league. Check out the /nbastreams subreddit on random days and you can get a good feel for a team watching even just 1 quarter. I like to roam around and watch a quarter of a bunch of games in a night.

Finally, post here. Ask questions, ask "Is Nurkic good or just big?" and "Why do people say Otto Porter can shoot when I have eyes and have seen him?". We razz each other a fair bit but honestly people talking about basketball is sorta the point so even basic questions are welcome. Both the GDT and this thread are good places and honestly the rules are pretty light. Don't mind Bashez.

Being in Denver owns as a basketball fan because their fanbase isn't the best and you can get tickets for super cheap. Plus all the city is swimming in generational talent.

A thing that makes more home-team games worth watching is when one of the non-stars on the team just appeals to you more than is reasonable. You then start watching games to see them improve and live through their small successes as much as you do from the team winning the game.

Oh yeah that's easily the best part of your local team being mediocre. It'd probably be even better if you weren't a Nuggets fan, you can see a lot of high-end teams play for cheap and enjoy it whether it turns out competitive or not.
