It's good, I don't like all the cars in it but the F1 cars are a blast and the P4 handles better than I expected, the 288 though, what is it they say about not meeting your heroes?

So I haven’t even owned my driving force GT a week yet and I’m already building a diy Simulator.

The guy who sold me my DFGT also sold me a gaming seat for $10 so I’m building it around that

I started by jigsawing out some wood to fit the seat and make a base.

Then I braced it and put a base on it. Seat slides right in

Then I put the seat on a bigger base made out of butcherblock and 4x4’s. This shouldn’t move around hopefully

All those DIYs make me want to create a driving/sim flying rig now that I have a garage and space.

Next step it to make sure my wife never goes into the garage while I work on it.

You do use second gear on F1 cars...and a lot of tracks actually. Most narrow hairpins are driven in second gear. With the fixed gear box ratios for the complete season (or roughly 1/2 the season, one change allowed) even more so because Monaco.

Robots confuse squirrels.

Second is for tight corners and hairpins, first is only for especially tight hairpins. That all depends on the car's power band though, there are cars in sim racing that have so much torque in 3rd that they basically don't have a 1st or 2nd gear. In the case of the Formula Trucks in AMS they literally don't have a first gear.

tuo

Depending on the sim (how accurately it models the dif), also consider your dif settings. Sometimes - especially with older F1 cars from the past turbo era or some batshit crazy turbo cars - you shift into second or lower gear simply to get the correct response from the dif during corner entry and mid corner, even if you would shift up before corner exit/throttle dail in to not get murdered by the turbo kicking in.

I'm in a bind because now that I'm watching open wheel and doing VR sim racing open wheel, everything else feels slow / boring by comparison. But I can't drive F1 cars at race pace.

Skips in iRacing is pretty good for me for now though.

(That said rally racing will always be awesome because gently caress yeah, its so different)

Getting there. Need to make some final adjustments to the pedal boards. The turnbuckles that hold the wheel stand up are rated to about 150 lbs a piece so hopefully my wheel doesn’t move at all

What about LMP1? Obviously not open wheel, but close in regard to downforce and drivability. Or DTM cars. They also basically are formula cars with fake bodywork, but a bit easier to handle due to less power and more weight. Both classes imo feel rather close to formula cars and require a similar driving style, while not beeing too far off the pace (in regard to GT3 cars for example, which also feel totally different). Plus with LMP1 cars you basically learn how to drive while looking through a letterbox slot.

Looks good. I don't know how tall you are, but check if the wheel isn't too far away/too high so it's still comfortable after driving for couple of hours.

6’3”. I might have to cut that 4x4 down a bit to bring the wheel lower. We’ll see after I put some time in it. The wheel post can slide back and forth on the main horizontal 4x4 once the turnbuckles are loosened, so that I can adjust any time with a wrench

They are driving force GT pedals so they will sit on the footboard? Maybe I’m not understanding what you’re asking? There is no clutch on the DFGT so it can all just sit on the right board and the left one is just a dead pedal.

When we met I tried to teach my future wife how to drive stick, but it was impossible because she was taught to drive an automatic with two feet "because it's safer."

When I tried to get her to use her right foot to brake it turned going to the grocery store into a white knuckle terror trip. So I gave up and she's ruined for life.

Hmmm. I never do, in the whole week I’ve been doing this, haha. I guess I didn’t think of that. I’ll look to see if there’s a good way to mod this setup to put the pedal base in the middle, it might get awkward with the upright pole in the center though.

I guess that’s the beauty of a homemade wood rig. I can do whatever with it.

Where did you learn to drive?
The brake pedal is used with both feet, don't hamstring your setup when you're already putting this much time into it.

LMP1 are kinda cool but I never got really into the cars so it doesn't have as much appeal for me, also I'm too lazy for proper Endurance racing. 24 minutes of Le Mans maybe :cheeky:

I think I'll just keep racing skips and Formula Renault and then try F1 cars again.

Heel and toe is pro, but if you're driving open-wheel cars with paddle shifters then you should be using left foot braking.

But otherwise left foot is clutch only.

Breaking right footed is cool and good, and others are right in saying that you shouldn't care too much about it. But especially when the field is very crowded, like lap 1 turn 1, it's quite good to be able to switch between brake and throttle without having to move the foot over. Also some cars make it easier if you can stop a loose rear with a short controlled step on the brake while still opening the throttle.

The most important aspect imo is that you feel comfortable in your simpit, and that stuff doesn't move around too much due to FFB. Since I was born with two left hands, I think what you built already is drat awesome, so don't listen too much to us about where to put the brake pedal...put it where you are comfortable, and drive the hell out of it until YOU feel the need to change something.

Clutch with right ear, though!
