A suggestion for a Mediterranean-centred PMC:

2x Typhoon FGR.4 http://cmano-db.com/aircraft/1033/
6x Harrier GR.9 http://cmano-db.com/aircraft/1720/
6x Tornado GR.1A (1991) http://cmano-db.com/aircraft/101/
1x Nimrod http://cmano-db.com/aircraft/2798/

When the British voted out of the European Union in 2016 it had enormous implications for disputed U.K. Territories globally.

No place felt this sudden, enforced isolation more than Gibraltar. Suddenly, with a mother country focused on other things, and facing hostiles on its borders, the Rock was expected to be forcibly subsumed into Spain by the end of the decade. They were rescued in part by the Catalonian intifada of 2017-19 which diverted Spanish attention elsewhere and gave Gibraltans time to make themselves difficult to swallow. The Tory government was more than happy to privatise the defence of one of its outposts, especially to stick it to Spain, and even sold the Corporation charged with that task a pair of its signature planes, the Eurofighter Typhoon.

Brexit also coincided with the implosion of the economy in Gibraltar, and the Corporation has been forced to seek alternative revenue streams. Currently this consists of charging a toll to use the entrance to the Mediterranean to ships not flagged in the EU or US - a practice that has been called 'a racket', 'gangster tactics' or 'modern day piracy'. Gibraltar LLC calls it 'a living' and invites those who have a problem with it to see how far they get without paying.

Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Turkey and Israel all have the means to wipe these muppets off the map. And probably will, because their shipping is getting hosed with.

True - but it's hard to make PMCs that aren't overwhelmingly strong if we keep comparing them to nation states.

Could handwave it by saying Spain doesn't like Morocco bringing anything close to their EEZ, the Brits haven't ruled out being unpleasant to people who hurt Gibraltar (is still British), and Egypt is distracted by Yooper's aforementioned trashfire in the Middle East.

No it isn't, but it still tramples my bloody lavender.
Alright I'm gonna run through these 3D print options and compare/contrast in order to assist peoples choices and you are gonna sit and read the results of my ramblings or you gonna scroll I guess.

General

-The Viggen, both Migs and the Cheetah have the same general max speed. F5 is nearly 200kt slower.

-Reliability factors wise they are all nearly within a decade of each other, ’85 to ’97, so it shouldn’t hurt us too much.

Loadouts- Air to Surface

-F5 can carry cluster bombs, rockets and iron bombs, no standoff, 1 ton bomb load with a 340nm strike radius. Only sensor is eyeball mk1 so day only, limited weather. Probe refuelling.

-Cheetah can carry rockets, iron bombs and light (10kg warhead) guided missiles with a 5 or 8nm range, will carry 2 of the guided missiles and 2 tons bombs load with a 130nm strike radius and it can't air to air refuel. Day only, limited weather.

-Viggen has rockets, iron bombs and some heavier short range guided missiles (5nm, 160kg warhead) Mavericks (6nm, 57kg) and the same RB15 antiship missiles as the Gripens (45nm, 300kg). Will carry 2 tons of bombs with a strike radius of 350nm or 2 of the RB15's for a 435nm combat radius. No a2a refuel. Air to ground is day only limited weather, anti-ship is all weather.

-Mig-21 has cluster bombs, rockets, iron bombs and 500kg TV guided bombs (2nm range). Will carry 1 ton of bombs with a 240nm combat radius. No a2a refuel. Day only, limited all weather.

-Mig-27 can carry cluster bombs, nukes, anti-runway bombs, anti-radar missiles, rockets, nukes, iron bombs, nukes, tv guided bombs, laser guided bombs, heavy guided missiles, nukes, anti-ship missiles and nukes. It will carry 4 tons of bombs with a 180nm combat radius. No a2a refuel. Mainly day only limited weather, laser clear weather only, AS-12 anti-radar missiles are day/night all weather. As are the nukes.

Loadouts- Air to Air

-F5 has 2 sidewinder L’s, (10nm max range, 9kg warhead). No radar. No radar warning. No ECM. Not a single luxury. 110 minutes of on station loiter at 200nm.

-Cheetah has 2 upgraded Python 3’s, (8nm, 11kg). Late 80’s, 60nm range radar, 120nm warning receiver. 105 minutes loiter at 150nm.

-Viggen has 2 sidewinder P’s, (10nm, 5kg) Late 70’s, 60nm range radar, 120nm warning receiver. No ECM. 180 minutes loiter at 150nm. **NOTE there is an upgrade package that can chuck amraam-b’s but it’s not in game yet, would have been nice**

-Mig-21 has 2 adder, (45nm, 23kg) and 2 archer, (10nm, 7kg). Early 90’s 60nm range radar, 120nm warning receiver. Defensive ECM package, generic. 40 minutes loiter at 150nm.

-Mig-27 has no air to air missiles but you could probably try and catch something airborne in the blast radius of a nuke. It’s got a laser guided gun. No radar, 120nm warning receiver and an early 70’s defensive ECM package.

-Conclusion-

Mig-21’s are great for lower tier air to air stuff, and a bit of precision a2g action but a single Mig-27 can carry the same bomb load as 4 Mig-21’s, with a massive variety of bomb types at the cost of not being able to shoot other aeroplanes with missiles. Drawback to both Mig options is lower range. If we wanted more excellent standoff shipping strike capacity/reasonable ground strike capacity without tying up Gripens then the Viggen would be a solid choice for that at a later point, especially with amraam upgrade. Cheetah kinda sucks, F5 worse so but at least it looks good.

It pretty much comes down to air to air need versus air to ground need.

The Viggen upgrades are in the game, they just aren't the version our 3d printer is offering. In the 1985 version you can get Sky Flash (Sparrow III clone), and in the 2002 version AMRAAMs.

After some thinking (and a lot of talk on Discord), here's another proposal:

12 Bisons = 90 million

that's it

Why? Because we have enough A2G to tide us over for two or three small missions, and because with the low loiter time, we may need to send up two flights of bisons in a mission. Twelve gives us enough for two flights of six, or one big wing of twelve.

We can expect that the SU-27S Flanker B will be available to print, 87 million in startup, approximately 30 million per plane. That's the same flanker that Ivanov offered us. Yooper mentioned on discord that we'd get a discount if we could steal the plans, but even without, once we get inter-mission procurement going we should be able to supplement our forces with Flankers. So I want to leave a fair chunk of money for that. Four Flankers would be great. Six would be fantastic. And if we find our A2G lacking, we can always buy in for Floggers after one or two missions, but we have a large number of strike planes compared to A2A.

Remember that even with ~200 million leftover from the more expensive plans, there are other things to pay for, and we also are likely to want a tooling cost of something, which could be 70 to 90 million. With smaller mission payouts, the cash we have right now is more important than it looks.

That sea strike Viggen caught my eye as well. How is this for a rather expensive with a little too much variety for its own good. I'll call it A SERIOUS PLANE COLLECTION:

4x AJ 37 Viggen (1990) - 4x14m=56m
Pretty plane, has DECM, can deliver Mavericks and that occasional sea strike, Swedish

4x MiG-27K Flogger J - 4x20m=80m
Can deliver a bizarre range of A2G munitions.

8x MiG-21bis UPG Fishbed N [Bison] - 8x7.5m=60m
Can sling a mid-range A2A missile, which we direly need, and a whole bunch of other stuff, very cheap

Total:196m

Again, this is a very expensive and unfocused proposal and really we should probably just get 12 Bisons like in the post directly above me.

TheDemon posted:

The doctor has ordered me to cut back on missiles to the face!

I did not realize that these were different variants, in game terms looking at the database nothing huge sticks out to me in terms of differences. I can do a Paveway and I can do an ALARM basically.

PMC proposal #2:
Name: Real Marina
Established: 2017
Based: Palma De Mallorca

8x F-16B Falcon Portugal (1995) http://cmano-db.com/aircraft/3430/
12x F/A-18A Hornet Spain (2008) http://cmano-db.com/aircraft/3802/

2x Descubierta-class Frigate: http://cmano-db.com/ship/836/
3x Goteborg-class Corvette: http://cmano-db.com/ship/815/

Combining late '90s and early '00s hardware with the very best traditions of Magellan and Columbus, Real Marina are well known for traveling the globe and stomping on the indigenous hardware of Central American republics. With the pick of the Iberian peninsula's best surplus airforce, it began as a tax-dodge/vanity project for a certain retired footballer, but has grown significantly since it was just Sergio Ramos in a EF-2000.

A recent real coup was when their naval connection, a star struck almirante from the Armada, offered a bargain basement deal on a couple of retiring FFGs. Quick thinking supplemented the Descubierta-classes with some recently-retired Swedish Corvettes, making Real's small naval force a not inconsiderable threat to the surface assets of the Hayard-Gunnes.

The Major ran his hand over the Gripen's smooth metal skin, feeling the familiar contours of rivets against his fingertips. Each part was right where he remembered it. Pylons, antennas, flaps and plexiglass. Each one sleeping, waiting to be called to action.

Beneath his fingertips, he felt her beautiful imperfections. The smudge of Angolan mud there. The fleck of Chinese shrapnel here. Paint chipped by Siberian hail. Each mark told a story only a few men had remembered. Only fewer could now tell it…

Closing his eyes, the sounds came back to him. The whine of the awakening engines. The humming of far-off anti-aircraft guns. The incessant warnings of Bitching Betty. The shouts of “Fox 3!” and “break!” The sounds of returning helicopters and the momentary surge of hope. The more he heard, the more he could see... Ventura looking out from that canopy and flashing him a thumbs-up before diving into the hellfire of Lhasa. The smoky lances of missiles sprinting from the Gripens. Man-made meteors criss-crossing the Angolan skies to end their journey in distant prinpricks of light. Watching the six take off into that grim northern sky. Watching only one come back.

Opening his eyes, he looked up at the small grey fighter. A sad smile spread across his face, tightening the corners of his scarred features. “She’s last one,” he murmured to himself. “The last one.”

Like the wild geese of past centuries, she’d wandered far from home. She’d found the wars of others. She’d done so much more than anyone had ever imagined possible. She’d gone up with her sisters. And only she had returned. The only one left to tell their story.

On the far edge of the nameless airstrip, the new arrivals stood in a boastful line, their new paint still drying. In a few minutes the ground crews would be here to drag her off to join them. She’d get new black boxes, new engines, and new eyes. They’d wash off the Angolan mud, pick out the Chinese shrapnel, and paint over the Siberian dents.

But they’d never be able to cover up what she’d done. Gripens are the Hired Goons. And she wouldn’t let them forget it.

One note regarding the Mig-21Bisons. They have one MASSIVE flaw: Range.

With a 40min 150nm CAP radius and a 220nm A2G strike radius with no posssibilities for air refuel, we've been up against SAMs with a longer action range than this thing. That means that it is not usable in an escort, CAP or air superiority role but is essentially limited to short range strikes or short range interception, preferably we don't keep this in the air, but rather have it stay on the ground untill they close in.
