We came to dread combat so much that the campaign basically ended with an anticlimactic handwave from the GM of "your plan worked, apparently" and we dropped a satellite on a pyramid.

Since my character was a man what shoots guns, I might as well have stayed home for the last few sessions of the game.

the harebrained schemes shadowruns are extremely good, except for returns which is just pretty good proof of concept

the SNES Shadowrun games remind me of EVO: The Search For Eden. Both games had huge ideas that the timeframe and hardware limitations couldn't really deliver on. I'd love for someone to tackle EVO's ideas again. Spore didn't even attempt to come close.

There was a Dreamcast game that did something with it but it was an incredibly janky game when I tried it.

One of these days I want to make a Shadowrun hack for Blades in the Dark. It's a great system for it--the whole thing is already based on a bunch of scoundrels doing scoundrel things, and the whole system hinges on pushing players to take big risks and do cool things, with big consequences for failure. There's a pseudo-cyberpunk Blades in the Dark hack out there already, but it's not Shadowrun so it'd need some work.

*looks it up*

Oh yeah, it was called Seventh Cross Evolution. The only thing I remember is that crabs will loving kill you and they're loud as poo poo.

Also the way to evolve involved randomly painting picross-looking boards or some poo poo.

the shadowrun snes game was kind of cool in concept but it's hilarious how bad the combat is and how there's an entire segment that's just grinding in a single room so you can beat the arena

Yeah it was pretty janky even at the time and I doubt I'd have been able to beat it without using a guide. There's also an incredibly easy to stumble on bug that will stop you from making any more progress and if you happened to save then without realising you'd have to start over from the beginning.

My favorite system for a shadowrun-style game now is Fragged Empire. It even has the gear porn aspect present, it's just not poo poo like in Shadowrun.

It's still pretty crunchy and involved but the combat rules actually work really well.

EVO is actually a sequel (remake?) for a pc-98 rpg that recently got translated, and the final chapter of that game is time converging into this giant mess where there are both ancient cavemen and futuristic space people reigning over the land

since i never played TW3's DLC i bought the Complete Edition while it's $20 since that'd be cheaper than buying the DLC by itself

and since it's been a while i started a new game

i take back the bad things i said about the combat, the combat is actually very good (because it's so easy you can kill things 10 levels higher than you if your dodge button works)

Is there something like isthereanydeal bur for the PS4, where I can just wishlist games and get alerts on sales? Finally got a PS4 :unsmith:

I'm already following @Wario64 on twitter as per a friend's recommendation.

There's a wishlist function through PSN but it won't alert you to when they go on sale. The sale prices tend to only change on Tuesdays for their weekly deals and then Friday through Sunday for flash sales (which they run about once a month).

Unironically probably a good bet to just follow the PSN thread here.

There's this site but I'm not sure if they have a wish list function. I've only used it to check past prices before jumping in on sales.

Edit: oh I guess it does. It tells you right on the opening page. I must have just skipped passed it. Lol

Oh hey, I didn't even consider that. I'm running a Fragged Empire game right now with the default setting and you're right, I think that'd hit a lot of those crunchy Shadowrun notes without being as overbearing as actual Shadowrun.

It's a pretty rad read: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/07/12/cyberpunk-2077-mike-pondsmith-interview/

quote:

“I wanted a house that was hard to find. On the web and in life, I don’t like to be traceable, so I wanted a place that people couldn’t look up very easily. It’s in the woods, you won’t find it on Google Streetview, and nobody has any reason to come by unless they know I’m there.

“One day I looked out of the window early in the morning and there was this guy out front. I kept an eye on him and he wasn’t moving. I didn’t know him so I figure he has no good reason to be here, so I got hold of a katana…”

...

“What you have to do is go outside your bubbles. The more dataflow you can stand in, the more you can learn. I hit reddit and twitter, and do a lot of lurking. There are only three places where I let people know who I am, mainly so that I can get a reaction from fans and people who are interested in our work. I can learn a lot by going to a store, looking at the magazines people are reading. I can learn a million things by visiting a toy store. These are the ideas the next generation will grow up with.

“The internet is important too, of course. I spend a lot of time trawling for information, checking things and going down rabbit holes. But you expose yourself to a lot of terrible things as well as wonderful things out there. I had a really nice young woman who was my social media person and she almost had a breakdown dealing with it. The biggest advantage you can have out there is to be unflappable. That helps. The most horrible voices are usually the loudest because they have no other place to yell.”
