Why are the top flight EU teams trying to apply for the last NA LCS spot? What is at stake there? Aren’t the changes happening in NA also happening in EU? Are there huge profit differences in the regions? If so, why? — — FlyQuest is basically just Cloud 9 B isn’t it? Don’t they have a lot of the same infrastructure and support as Cloud 9? That might have something to do with it. gently caress if I know for sure though.

Libertine posted:Why are the top flight EU teams trying to apply for the last NA LCS spot? What is at stake there? Aren’t the changes happening in NA also happening in EU? Are there huge profit differences in the regions? If so, why? EU has had an extremely hard time getting teams profitable (even remotely so). It's bad enough that a trio of orgs (Fnatic, G2, and Misfits iirc) all applied for NA LCS spots, although Fnatic's application was probably an attention stunt. H2k in particular has been extremely vocal about the lack of profitability (or even sustainability) for teams in EU. The NA LCS is a lot more appealing for team ownership not only due to the incoming franchising system (which is NA only, although China is implementing a similar franchised system as well) but also because sponsorships are much more attainable and viewership is better and more valuable. Travis had a good video explaining more details on the sponsor/viewership side a few months ago. Basically, sponsors only care about eyeballs on their products (obviously) and NA LCS has much more valuable eyeballs than EU LCS does. This is for a variety of reasons. First off, through some kind of advertising metric, a single NA viewer is worth more than an EU viewer to an advertiser (it's some kind calculation of spending power). Secondly, those NA viewers are concentrated in a single country with a unified market, whereas in EU while the currency and overall market is unified, you are dealing with a lot more barriers and differences within the region. There's a wide variance in who would want to advertise to say, a Polish viewer, versus a French viewer. Not to mention countries outside of the EU. This all makes it a lot easier for NA teams to acquire good sponsorships, and even then it's difficult (see: IMT being denied a franchise likely due to lack of sustainable sponsorship income). Finally, Riot HQ has been hugely focused this year on getting franchising implemented in NA and seems to have hoped that EU could just trundle along until next year when they can focus on it more. That (along with a miserable showing at Rift Rivals) was causing a lot of angst to come across the pond and as a result they've been more actively throwing ideas out there, although there's nothing really concrete yet. Get hyped for MSF vs. SKT! I know MSF probably can't hack it against SKT, but damnit I want to see Maxlore and the boys pull through. I legitimately think they have a shot if they play to their strengths and remember their win conditions, because SKT has looked miserable early and MSF has been one of the teams that's properly executed early game aggression and converted it into wins. If there's any year for an upset, I think this is it. In other news, it looks like the final NA LCS spot goes to.... the Houston Rockets????? lmao if you think Jack didn't strongly influence riot to keep Flyquest in also good job SSG on fixing that Ambition randomly being bad early problem and scouting the LZIM drafts well and boo on LZIM not being able to beat a bot lane that was struggling in 2v2s versus essentially every team in their group and also not playing around top side

If Misfits can take game 1 against SKT I'd start believing they can actually win the match. Tilting Huni early is going to be key and I trust in Maxlore to be able to do that, especially if there are more nuggets on the line.

skt is almost an underdog this worlds, particularly after their groups. plus they lost both their series against samsung in the summer split. samsung even kept nearly the same roster so they know what well they're up against. skin diversity aside, i kinda want them to win of course i want RNG to win more - they proved they can beat samsung, so their match is anyone's game. but I'm pretty sure SKT can beat RNG if the turret blitz meta doesn't pick up. I know that was a thing for a bit there at the end of groups, but I watched LZ/Samsung by highlights so I'm not sure

curiousCat posted:I love posts that age well there were a lot of reasons to believe that SSG would get blasted. as i mentioned Ambition played like poo poo in the early game during the last round and Crown has required a camp, and the SSG bot lane was struggling in 2v2s versus much worse bot lanes. well Ambition stopped playing like poo poo early and he was able to get Crown rolling or at least stop him from feeding. it feels simplistic to say that poor drafting and other losing lanes caused the bottom lane to not be a 2v2 but even so it was a bit of a surprise that SSG did that well down there. they had a really good read on LZIM and LZIM seemed to have failed in prep in some form or another. also its super weird to me that they didn't try to get Khan ahead at all.
