they can grow their limbs back after having them cut off also i am pretty sure they're critically endangered bc they only live in one swamp in mexico so having some as healthy pets is probably good for the species

Roosevelt posted:paging axolotl farmer, who voted my friendly corgi pic a 1 last page seriously? no one recognize that one specific corgi? now axolotls, I used to keep them in an aquarium some 20 years ago, and they're very easy to keep alive and breed. they also poop a lot and make a mess, so you either do what I did and clean the aquarium and pump filters often or you buy fancy bottom filter devices. they can live for 10-15 years and grow to about 30 cm (okay, a foot) in a year or so within hatching. they are nearly extinct in the wild, since axolotls are only found in a couple of lakes which are now part of Mexico City. however, all aquarium axolotls stem for a batch of six or so specimens that came from Mexico to Paris, France in 1863. the wild type color is black and green with golden eyes, but most specimens in aquaria are leucistic (like the one in the pic), which means that they are not albino, but lack the green and black pigment in their skin. pretty sure there are some people i PI that keep axolotls how know a lot more than me.

creationist believer posted:never heard if it they are neotenic aka paedomorphic, which means they become sexually mature in a larval stage. larval amphibians have external gills, and live under water. most of them lose the gills and move onto land as they mature and only return to water to breed. axolotls are part of the tiger salamander species complex, and there are populations of North American salamanders that breed in the axolotl stage, but they also lose their gills and move up onto land under certain conditions. true axolotls remain in the neotenic state no matter what, but can be induced to metamorphose into the gill-less rough skinned land phase by injecting them with growth hormones.
