I really think, for as much as the internet has connected people to each other, it's done a lot of damage in our collective ability to have grown-up conversations about complicated issues. I honestly wonder how many people get most of their discourse on contentious issues through comments sections or Facebook. People certainly CAN have reasonable conversations online, but that lack of vocal and body cues really makes a difference, and can lead to misinterpretation, especially if someone isn't an effective writer. This is also far more likely in a conversation with strangers. People are often much more combative with each other in news comments than they would be on a friend's page, for example.

i think the bigger problem is adherence to extreme free speech, as in "we won't police the content of speech as that is not our role" as a statement from the admins

this is what twitter and reddit were founded on, and look at the emergency steps twitter is taking to dial it back. look at how reddit has a collective freakout every time they ban a child porn subreddit

meanwhile something awful, for its many flaws, remains a decent place to have conversations on the internet because the mods actively police speech

You only need to look at a handful of examples of ancient graffiti to realize that people have always been bringing down discourse in public forums. The internet just made those spaces bigger and more accessible; it didn't change the nature of the people using them.

I'd also agree that a large part of the blame falls on massive public misunderstanding of what free speech as a policy actually means (and how specifically it applies to government actors, rather than all actors.)

I mean even that MGTOW site that was linked up above, over half the articles/videos are "Look how dumb and bad women are."

It might not be fully anonymous, but it’s detached enough that people let loose a barrage of poo poo they would be too scared to say to someone’s face.

Also, when we collectively decided it’s ok to be a racist piece of poo poo on Facebook and Twitter, people started to feel like there are any consequences to spouting “race realist” and dog whistle screeds on public, online forums.

If someone's going to do some poo poo, there is a near 0% chance that they will tell you about it on facebook first. If they're gonna pull up and start a fight or shoot at you or whatever they'll just do it. I've been threatened over facebook a bunch of times and not one of them ever followed through.

What I’m seeing on trending:

> vlogger blooper reel
> celebrity chicks touching icky bugs
> something about black holes
> VEVO music video
> Samantha bee talking about natural disasters
> an ad for Amazon key
> cartoon about a cat going to the vet
> another music video
> news caster eats [SPICY] chip
> questions for vogue model
> Matt Damon does a thing on talk show
> how to hack a vending machine

At this point I hit ‘Corey’s TRUTH campaign’ which looks like it could be the closest to anything he’s talking about even though it’s a dude in a ball cap looking dopey

Idk why I even put in the effort to debunk that bullshit by literally clicking a button but they just can’t help themselves

To be fair, it won't do that with the advertised video (at least on mobile), and the advertised video for me is a documentary about a trans woman, but I subscribe to ContraPoints so at least I can figure out why YouTube thinks I might be interested in it. :v:

Source? A family member in Facebook just posted a rant from Beck about how America has become soft because George HW Bush had to apologise for grabbing women's asses.

I went to get the source and I tuned in late and apparently it's a misunderstanding on my part. He did not say what Mark Halperin did wasn't sexual assault, but when I tuned in made it sound like he said that. He was comparing it to what Bush did and saying "What Bush did isn't sexual assault." So whoops, my bad on that. Should have gotten the full context before I just assumed.

Beck's defense of Bush doesn't fully work, he claims that the joke Bush told about his favorite magician being "David Cop-a-feel" is just a dumb joke he tells to lighten the mood and make people feel relaxed, but the joke doesn't make sense unless he's actually copping a feel while he tells it. But to Beck it's just a joke that has nothing to do with anything.
