The King's Speech is way worse than Crash, and Crash is extremely bad. Spotlight is mediocre at best, Argo is Bad, The Departed is OK but it's just a Lifetime Achievement Award, A Beautiful Mind is terrible, Dances with Wolves is garbage...

Oscar winners are overwhelmingly bad or mediocre.

Annie Hall is better than Star Wars though.

Nah. The Kings Speech is fine. Like something you watch once and forget about. It's not as offensively lovely as Crash is.

Crash is worse than The Room.

The Kings Speech is like a History Channel TV movie or something. It's pure mediocrity. Utterly brainless. Also it's pro monarchy (!) At least Crash is totally insane. Both Crash and The Room are better movies than King's Peach.

Actually every winner in the 70s is good. Except I suspect One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest isn't good.

Roger Deakins probably isn't gonna win or even be nominated for cinematography for Blade Runner 2049. The Oscars are a goddamn joke.

I would pay good money to see the incredibly awful book sequel made into an actual movie starring old man Tom Hanks.

I mean
- Gump becomes a janitor in a strip club
- Plays for the New Orleans Saints
- Invents New Coke
- Tries to solve the energy crisis with a pig poo poo plant
- Takes part in Iran-Contra
- Becomes a stock market millionaire
- Moves to Alaska and crashes the Exxon Valdez
- Kickstarts the destruction of the Berlin Wall with a literal punt
- Captures Saddam

Can you even imagine?

What they should do is cross over with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and just make Forrest Gump into the Beyonder. Let Hanks go full on Saturday Night Fever.

It's a good movie, but by the time I saw it the effect was mostly "oh, so *that's* what that other thing was referencing".

I had the same reaction to The Godfather. Watching it, all I could think was how derivative it was. Then I realized that it wasn't derivative, it was the thing from which other films derived.

The Oscars are not a very good judge of quality, you see.

Spotlight was good but it wasn't the best movie that year.

That's 100% fair. Happens to lots of old films. Just, like, nobody talks about "In Which We Serve" or Christ any version of "Song of Bernadette", much less the film version. It stands alone in its year.

My taste is unbelievably middle to low brow, so I won't generally watch foreign films. Argo is just a bad movie, sorry that's how it is. I mean it's technically competent because it cost millions of dollars and was generally worked on by seasoned, talented professionals but goodness is a relative thing baby.

There are like two good scenes in Argo, it's not good. Affleck deserved a nom and a win for Gone Baby Gone instead.

Spotlight and The Hurt Locker are very good though, so I don't know what's going on here.

I’ve said it before in other threads, but I’ll always be pissed off that the Academy didn’t give Sharon Stone the Best Actress award for her portrayal of Ginger Rothstein in Casino.

She was nominated, but she should’ve won. She was an absolute lunatic in that role.

Which sounds loving awesome, like the original ending of God of War.
