Ironically, in FC and SC, nobody had trouble remembering thingamajig's name, but thanks to Mary's and Polly's absentmindedness, what's-his-name's name will forever remain obscure. (the anime show threw a similar dig his way)

I no joke actually forgot Greg existed before I even played 3rd for the first time and made it a running joke. Poor Gary, people always get his name wrong.

Yeah there was season 2 and the subs for it are out. But it's also the season where a lot of more obscure Falcom games get referenced so some of the jokes may fly over your head. It'll also spoil the main villain of Zero and maybe Ao (can't remember on that one) as part of one of the gags so if you've not played the Crossbell duology and are adamant about not spoiling yourself, I wouldn't watch season 2.

Julio and Chris have really good banter and you can see what game FC was most inspired by. Just be aware the game is slow, I'm not joking when I say the main story doesn't even really begin to kick in until halfway through the game and even then it's slow at revealing that when it does.

In general Tear of Vermilion has the worst translation on PSP with a few genuinely brilliant lines still sneaking through, White Witch still has a bad translation but it holds up a little better and you can still enjoy the dialogue in spite of that and Cagesong has the best translation, being roughly around the Zero leak quality which... still isn't good but it's somewhat functional.

Garghav is great and would totally buy a remake, that quadruples the dialogue. Ironically, i liked them basically in order of worst tl, I should replay em see if that changes. Please bring back pets Falcom.

I think it's because of the structure of the games. People tend to either like White Witch or Tear of Vermilion more depending on if they liked the slow paced world building of FC or the faster paced game where you know who the villains are upfront and are trying to thwart each others plans like SC. With White Witch being comparable to FC and Tear of Vermilion being compared to SC.

Cagesong feels like the odd one out and tends to be people's least favorite in the Gagharv trilogy despite rather ironically being the one which plays most similarly to Trails. I think it's due to the mixture of the pacing being jarring, with the first half being really slow paced like White Witch but with treasure hunting and collecting Resonance Stones instead of visiting Shrines and the second half suddenly swerves into extremely high stakes for the world (and Another) that tries to answer all of the loose ends from its own game and the other two games and the other major issue is due to the choice of protagonist.

See, Forte is a boring protagonist compared to White Witch's Julio and Tear of Vermilion's Avin. But he also wasn't intended to be the protagonist, McBain was. But much like Square-Enix did with Vaan in Final Fantasy XII, Falcom worried that their fanbase wouldn't like a protagonist in their 60s (even if McBain is a badass who has Dogi's wall crushing with his fists ability) and as such Forte was shoehorned into the role instead. It's confirmed as such in the Gagharv trilogy artbook.

Minor White Witch and Cagesong of the Ocean spoilers:

Which is kind of a shame given that Forte is actually an NPC from White Witch, as one of the Oracles Julio and Chris meet when learning about the Wave of Raual. . Though naturally that reference is lost in the translation because it mispells Forte's name as Folt because of course it does. That's also confirmed in the Gagharv artbook.

kanjitomo is just a program you download that recognizes Japanese text you mouse over and provides translations (on a word by word basis, It's not a translation app). This was really nice.

Despite finishing Trails FC close to launch, I just got back in SC (which has led me to forget some characters and stuff, whoops). The combat seems more difficult in SC. What are some recommended builds for Estelle, Kloe, Olivier, and Scherazard? I just beat chapter 2 and have Tita and Zin as well. I'm not good at RPGs at all.

You have three of the best spellcasters in the game. Aerial and White Gehenna are pretty solid choices for attack spells, but you'll likely be full of Time arts since Cast + Action are pretty much locks for all of them, and EP Cut gives you some nice space and mirage that you'll always need. Iirc Tita and Zin are not very good in SC, although Zin is occasionally useful on bosses since using his Stat boost craft + Taunt is actually pretty solid tanking (assuming the boss doesn't use Arts). But I couldn't look past their lovely SPD stats or the fact that earth quartz loving suck throughout the entire series so Zin has some terrible orbment choices.

Build Kloe and Olivier as casters, Mind, EP, EP Cut, Action and some elements and blast things with spells.

Schera is a wind locked caster, so you can do the same thing.

Estelle is more physically oriented that magic, so while you should still give her EP Cut and Action, also give her Attack and a status ailment quartz, so you can True Hurricane and Blind/Petrify/Death a big circle.

Thanks, this is some great advice for a scrub like me. I wish leaving people behind didn't mean missing out on their dialogue to things but oh well.

Sounds like EP Cut and Action are quartz that everyone should get?

Who should be the healer in my group? I assume there will be more people joining the group later but I'll deal with that when the time comes.

Cake Attack
Mar 26, 2010

kloe is basically specced as a healer with her s craft and whopping three water locked slots

scherezard is only an okay caster so her best thing is her craft that gives everyone else a turn instantly.

estelle is jack of all trades which early-mid game should have you spec her more physical but late game she becomes more of a support caster as magic becomes better and physical drops off for the non specialists

tita isnt very good in general but her large area blind is pretty useful

zin only gets good once he gets his +60 buff and thunder god kick at which point he's op since thunder god kick hits once per enemy in the area of effect due to a bug for massive damage

While I'm dreaming about things I'd like, more interesting Arts and Crafts areas of effect would be neat. Like an attack that hits targets in all cardinal directions. Or targets the whole battlefield, but only in small circles, like a dotted pattern.

Yeah, enemies become slightly tougher throughout SC since you're supposed to be more familiar with the mechanics.

Anyway, unless you know exactly what you're getting into, you generally want to balance your party out with some characters focussing on physical offense and the others on casting. Estelle can generally take on either physical or support caster role, though she's generally slightly better at physical.

Everybody should have action-quartz and casters should also have Cast-quartz. Speed is important in this game. You generally want to give casters either EP-quartz or EP-cut quartz, both to make their EP-reserves last longer and because most multi-target spells require space points.

- Kloe's orbment lacks flexibility, so you'll always have the highest HP and Mind quartz available on her, coupled with either a Heal or Yin-Yang quartz. The rest of her slots are generally occupied by Action quartz (which you're best off having on all characters) to increase speed, a Cast-quartz to reduce casting speed and an Evade-quartz and EP/EP Cut quartz to make her heals multitarget. (you need wind, mirage and space points in order to get the multiheals) There's not much room for customization afterwards, but Kloe's inflexibility is offset by her skill at the stuff she's good at. Heal when necessary, zap stuff with Aerial or Blue Impact otherwise. You eventually get some arts-boosting woman-only footwear that can make her a magical nuke.

- Olivier's the opposite of Kloe in casting. He doesn't get many arts-boosting equipment options, but he has great flexibility. You can make him replace Kloe on healing duty at times and he'll still have room for some additional stuff. Just let him use whatever elements you need at that point. Titanic Roar is a good option on him if you need something that hits everything on the field.

- Schera's a secondary caster. Her ats-stat isn't quite as good as Olivier's or Kloe's, but she's more durable than either of them. (and she can wear woman's-only ats-boosting equipment too) Just give her whatever Kloe or Olivier's not using in order to cover a wide array of spells and elements.

Since Schera's your partner and can't be taken out of the party at this point yet and she's a caster, you generally want to outfit Estelle as a physical attacker and take another physical attacker alongside either Olivier or Kloe. Neither Zin nor Tita are great at arts, so just give them quartz to raise their HP, attack, speed and movement. You also want to give Tita some status-quartz. (like deathblow, freeze, petrify or sleep) You might want to consider giving Zin petrify/poison and Septium Vein instead of defense quartz, his base defense and high HP generally make him tough enough to kill as it is.

Zin's a single-target hitting tank who can dish out physical abuse, but can take even more. He's generally there to take hits instead of your weaker characters. He gets a lot better once his buff-craft upgrades from 30% str/def to 60% str/def and he gets an AOE-attack craft that's glitched and hits multiple times if it hits multiple opponents.

Tita's a crowd-controller who's great at neutering anything that's vulnerable to blind (like a rather tough bounty monster in Chapter 3), but whose physical strength is only on the same level as Estelle's. (good, but not great) She's still fairly useful in encounters with lots of targets and later on she can act as a back-up healer due to her healing craft upgrading to heal more HP, as well as remove status ailments and debuffs, as long as you can keep her alive.

Actually, all characters have the same speed stat (at the same level) :) in SC, except for Joshua (and one character who joins VERY late), whose speed stat are 1 or 2 points higher.

technically correct but craft delay varies which functionally means the same thing, all zanes offensive crafts are saddled with a longer delay then joshua's making for latter functionally faster despite having the same speed

Shining Poms in Cold Steel give exactly one level, no matter what level you are.

They're really only useful if you want to hit level 80 for the carry over bonuses for Cold Steel 2. The bonuses are absolutely not necessary.
