Poor lady, she's probably in terrible pain. Lipedema is one of nature's cruel jokes. As well as horrifying to look at!

I had a teacher with this condition. Is it caused by being obese, or does it happen to people of average weight as well? Just curious.

Lipedema, basically a disorder which causes most of the fat in some women's bodies to collect below the waist. Obesity doesn't cause it, but it's a significant risk factor because diet and exercise are only minimally effective as a treatment. I.e., once the fat is there, surgery is just about the only way to get rid of it. You can find pictures of women with the condition who've got a six-pack but still have flabby legs. Thanks for the explanation. In my teacher's case she was also obese. I imagine lipedema must be an awful condition to deal with and especially frustrating for women who are otherwise in good shape but can't get rid of the fat on their lower half.

That could also be lymphedema. Basically the same as lipedema, but the difference is lymphedema is a disorder of the lymphatic system and is commonly caused by dysfunction in the flow of lymph fluid through the arms or legs.

Another challenge is that the effective treatments are liposuction (in the early stages) and surgery (in the later stages), and most health insurance won't cover those procedures unless there are secondary morbidities (ulcers, infections). Because not being able to walk normally due to weird fatty tumors is apparently not a health issue?

Because not being able to walk normally due to weird fatty tumors is apparently not a health issue? That's terrible but doesn't surprise me. I don't think insurance companies care about quality of life. I knew a lady who was truly obese. She was small in frame but was carrying so much weight, she was practically round. She'd had several heart attacks and had heart surgery. Insurance wouldn't pay for her to have bariatric surgery unless she gained more weight. Now granted she was the one who kept eating too much of the wrong things, but I think if she wasn't going to stop doing that of her own accord, gastric bypass surgery would probably help avoid more health problems down the road. It might even end up saving the insurance company money in the long run.

Yeah, so a fairly-prominent (or maybe formerly prominent) goon on here once legitimately asked my wife (KNOWING SHE WAS MY WIFE) if she had any videos of her nursing our son. And I've read the conversation, there was absolutely no mistaking his intentions. This wasn't a 'my wife needs help', which my wife would have glady provided. No no, this was 'so, uhh.... do you ever make videos of you feeding your son from your breasts? Would you be able to send those videos, hehehe?'. Hey, goon, if you're reading this (and you might be!), I don't forget poo poo like this. You've officially creeped out both of us, and I can't promise I'll respond to any of your pm's in the future.
