I haven't seen the show but "bungle" is such a silly word to include in a mech name that it kind of wraps around to owning.

It's fitting because it's a very silly show. Comedic Tomino ftw.

One of the best scenes early on is when one of the villains is smoking a cigar and while he's trying to look like a badass he accidentally puts his lit cigar in the wrong way.

The Condor bit, the weird fishdudes being unable to handle Chiru or whatever her name is, every single second Timp is on screen and "it's fine, I'm a main character" are all extremely good and Xabungle is good.

I like all of Xabungle's gags on paper (and in SRW) but something about the show turns me off violently. All the timing feels slightly wrong in a way I can't quite put my finger on, like the flow of time itself is in the Uncanny Valley.

This just sounds like a comedy version of Zeta Gundam so it's pretty consistent tbh.

Putting aside that the front part of it is actually quite cool looking, it having a rather wonky and un-cool looking transformation perfectly fits the humor and setting of Xabungle. It's made by an advanced civilization with access to much greater technology, so it not looking like other mechs makes sense while it looking nearly cool but not actually cool is just like the example with Timp and his cigar; among many others. Jiron tries to look cool and comes off as kind of goofy and dumb a couple of times too if I recall. And trying to look cool but being kind of goofy in doing so is basically Fatman's whole shtick.

Thanks to Brunom's SRWL LP, I started watching Gaiking. I'm by episode 13, and the series is really good at showing why Daiya shouldn't have used Face Open.

By that I mean that the animation quality went to poo poo in a series that wasn't particularly well-drawn to begin with. It's too powerful, it destroys the budget.

EDIT: Okay, it actually channels all that budget into fight scenes. That was a really drat good fight. But the rest of the episode was still really ugly and I nearly skipped it due to that, and it would've been a mistake.

Effort post ahead:

The movie suffered from a lack of creativity. Most of the storylines, scenes and writing style were nicked from other animes(Eukeka7 and NGE for instance).
The first part of the movie was unbearable in its NGE-itis, lots of useless drama about nothing. We seriously had a several minutes long psychotic breakdown placed after the main Dr. Hell attack, with Dr. Yumi(now prime minister of japan) demanding to the photon lab that kabuto was to be reinstated as an active pilot again(while doing a loving gendo pose) and with Sayaka(now head of the Photon Labs) replying by crying about peace and that kabuto shouldn't be burdened with the fate of the world and a lot of emo bs(miss if Dr. Hell wins we are hosed with a capital F, hurt feelings or not). I was seriously surprised that the first half of the movie didn't have any eva tracks thrown in for good measure like shin godzilla for god sake. Not joking I almost ditched my friends at the intermission. It was soo irritating and boring.
The second half of the movie shifted gears to a more classical super robot pace/structure(but the mazinger still required a loving evangelion bootstrap with a good three to five minutes of techs shouting technojargon to start the robot).

There is a point i'd like to provide that might sound idiotic but i think that non :italy: readers wouldn't believe otherwise. Until a few years back, most anime and scifi localization teams were the same used for triple-a movies and relied on former theatre actors and writers, so the text and delivery were at worst decent. I won't deny that, compared to the original audio, most go-nagai anime or even classic scifi movies(the dub for Blade Runner for instance is a lot better than the original thanks to Rutger Hauer voice actor having a deeper tone than him and sounding like the part) were better to watch dubbed rather than subbed. Sadly modern localization suffer from a tendency to throw english words to sound/act cool and to provide :techno: but the worst offenders are anime and marvel movies, which is hilarious because most nerds know english (so it's not foreign-sounding) and the culture shock effect is minimal due to computer nerds being the target audience of these dubs(throw the undubbed word "tank" all you like, we know what it is and it sound dumber the longer you keep at it) . Alas I am one of the nerds i just mentioned and I couldn't but laugh at a eva-style bootstrap sequence for a real robot in which one of the techno-moonspeak labcoat dudes stated, with a seriousness unseen even in the courts of law, "HEATSINK REACHING MAXIMUM CAPACITY!", with heatsink in english while the rest was in italian. Even if it's completely irrelevant(I sincerely hope they unclog mazinger heatsinks from dust, it would be a shame if it throttles down like a cheap AMD RX card) they made the scene ridiculous to the point that I was expecting them to state i don't know, "WIPER FLUID CHARGED TO MAXIMUM PRESSURE" :science: afterwards. The italian dub thrown a lot of that and while it's the norm nowadays it still grinded my gears. Not the movie fault but it ruined the experience a bit.

Even so you want to see real robots movies for the fights not for the talk right? There are actually three fights in the whole movie: precredits, middle of the first half(to show like every nge-like clone that the army is at best useless) and final confrontation. Out of the almost two hours i think that there is less than thirty minutes of fights(or at least it felt that way, I didn't chrono), the rest is idle talk or family drama. The fights weren't that good because all the mech felt like they were too light, almost gundam like. If I am watching a go nagai robot I am expecting two or more hulking brutes slugging out punches that make the earth tremble and buildings crumble, not featherweights jumping around like they are pumped with helium. Not a big fan of the new gundam-like designs, they look too much refined and nimble, you expect them to have verniers and builtin thrusters not a scrander jet on the back. The sole mech i liked is the new mass prod mazinger which looked the part(a GM with a mazinger helmet for good measure). The final super move almost made me cry(:ohdear:If we don't stop the coral-ripoff dimension reset thingie we are hosed, what do we do?We raise our hands and give all of our earth photon energy to make a rocket punch spirit bomb i kid you not) from being such a ripoff.

The most blatant issue i've felt is the lack of urgency in the whole movie, it's almost like the giant fuckoff apocalypse robot chilling out in the distance is not a problem and there is no issue at all with dr.hell conquering the headquarter of the photon labs and demanding protection money from the world, let's go for a ride and chill out and then suddendly the world ends in five minutes and we need to take the missouri mazinger from the old storage room and save the day with not-eureka in the tandem seat.

I am, like almost all :italy: anime fans, a go-nagai aficionado so it takes a lot of effort to piss me off to this point watching a mazinger movie. I liked all mazinger in recent times, doom-and-gloom of the mazinkaiser movie or shin mazinger with it silliness/seriousness tonal shifts or even the Métal hurlant/2000AD style of SKL . They had for all their flaws a core, a soul where you saw that at least the people involved cared or had fun while making it. Infinity on the other hand feel like they had to do something for the anniversary and they waited until the last day to write something just to please the prod commitee.

Oh I was almost forgetting, do you like Nissans? BECAUSE THIS IS THE MOVIE FOR YOU THEN! There are more screen time for Nissan product placement than there are mecha fights. There is a scene that break any possible suspension of disbelief and it begs to be recalled for future generations. Say your base is under attack by brocken's army, you get in a anime fist-against-guns fight in a cableway car, you miracously manage to escape unscathed from the ordeal (thanks to not-eureka moving at the speed of a geriatric pensioner while doing moves that not even the three stooges would stage without feeling deeply ashamed) so you get to your getaway car, a nissan family minivan(with a detailed cel-shaded side/front/interior in frame for the whole getaway scene), you run away like hell from the enemy while obeying to the city speed limit of 30 miles per hour and then you take the highway to gently caress knows where, still obeying speed limits. You are being chased by literal armed robot-zombie death squads but you are still following the street code/regulation like it's the bible, it's not like judge dredd is going to appear and bust your kneecaps Kabuto.

If we want to play the score game i would give the movie 6.5/10 . Technically is decent but story/composition wise is awful.

EDIT: Now that I've slept on it i wanted to share a quick list of "foreign inspirations", spoiler block ahead:
  • The new mazinger infinity, which names the film, is a giant robot coming from another dimension with a biological construct in the tandem seat which is trying to learn feelings from humans and overreacting at times, mostly crying (copied from Eureka7)
  • Kabuto koji is shown to be a man of science by bolting him a "mazin-scouter" science monocle, thankfully used only for the second scene of the movie(Dragonball obv.)
  • The military mounts up a giant final push, which is shown to be useless and hilariously ineffective(copied from a thousand other series but I'll stick to EVA for simplicity)
  • Said military pushes the attack from blue waters carriers for no apparent reasons as the enemy is shown to have only a2a defense(rahxephon)
  • Dr.Hell winning strategy is not to use force but divide and conquer the world by using humans lazyness and indifference(Gatchaman crowds)
  • The mass production robots are junk while the prototypes are the sole ones to be able to fight(another classic, I'll take Gundam)
  • The titular robot power is to reset dimensions to zero/another if the pilot didn't like the place(plenty of choice, dunno future diary?)
  • Non-eureka in the end wanted to be a real girl, no strings on her...(I would say pinocchio but let's settle for Astro boy)
  • Let's adopt the robot/virtual ai as our own daughter!(Sword art Online)
  • planet earth lend me your power to defeat majin-buu Dr. Hell(another dragon ball reference, i think z but I watched it so long ago I'm not too sure)
  • Non-eureka stays behind to hack the planet and cannot go back to reality(i dunno, rage of bahamut?)

I am sure to have forgotten at least a reference or two.

I am getting grumpier with age so maybe I was too critic on the movie but we are in a age where anime is no longer fringe art so I no longer want to provide training wheels and easy high votes just because it's not common place. There is so much good anime products nowadays to pick so I don't want to give a title that just carries a name and a robot that we liked as childrens a free pass. Well all my friends(they are not an anime binge watcher like me so i expect that most of the other series being ripped off passed over their heads) and the crowd seemed to love it so it's not going to be a flop. In :italy: anime is a direct to disc affair, disc sales are the ones that make or break a series so i expect good sales just from the nametag alone, reviews from local anime sites provide 8+ votes and high praise everywhere so it's going to break even just from italy alone I think. The limited release got less than thirty people in my cinema but in my town it was the first day of a big scifi movie event, there was little to no advertising for infinity, so most people i met at the convention stated that they forgot about it or didn't made it in time as that day was a working one and the cinemas provided only a mid afternoon show, within average working hours, so low numbers were to be expected.
