Adventurer Conqueror King is B/X with more classes, and a skill system (typical of its kind, so with all the benefits and annoyances such a thing brings). Its main selling point is a focus on the D&D "endgame", the idea of progressing past the looting stage to command of armies and the like. As part of that, it has a big economic focus, and this manifests itself all over the place. For example, the book removes or alter spells that woul break a medieval economy or radically transform the world in ways fantasy games tend to overlook (e.g. permanent light, low-level and permanent animate dead, readily accessible raise dead). There's a lot of stuff about spell research and its costs, and how the characters can invest money, and how goods or specialists are available, and how the PCs interact with all this. Then there's further books that add mass combat rules, again because the game is interested in the big time, but in a "realistic" (i.e. non-gonzo) fashion. If all that interests you, I'd recommend it. If not, there's better plain-jane B/X clones out there, and a lot of clones that emulate a genre or some other ruleset or what have you rather than focusing on the endgame.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. The guy seems like scum from what I've been told, but I'm not losing sleep over the fact that I probably bought him a machiatto through royalties; he doesn't rant about SJWs in his books that I've noticed, so they're their own thing. I'm not throwing out Chinatown because Polanski's a pedo creep either.

Thanks for the recommendations! For Gold & Glory looks right up my street, so I'll grab that when my wallet recovers from the Halloween sale. I actually bought ACKS ages ago, didn't know he was a Nazi, that sucks. I thought the concept was really cool but then I read it and realised I'd never be able to get my friends to go for it. With all these endorsements though I'll see if I can give it a go somehow.

How big does a hobby need to be that dickweeds occupying hobbyist spaces stops being a problem, anyway? "Oh but they’re only racist on Twitter, not at our weekly underwater basketweaving rehearsal." I mean, "voting with your wallet" is an actual thing in this postmodern capitalist hellscape we live in, not just a turn of phrase. By buying the dude's book you're sending a fairly clear message that says "hey I like your books, please stick around this hobby of mine and make more books". To be fair, the majority of his cash goes towards his wife's fibromyalgia medical and other bills. He's definitely not a Nazi or overtly racist in any way I've encountered, but he's an eloquent Ayn Rand adherent and a bit of a perv. Not "handsy" to my knowledge luckily, more along the lines of "you should wear heels more often" (not that that's great). Hi, I played the rogue (Viktir) and a fighter that was reincarnated as a centaur (Morne) in the ACKS home campaign - though before that we mainly played Cyberpunk(and sometimes other flavors of D&D), and will say that the sketchiest part of his personality that made it into ACKS is probably Bladedancers(almost always chosen by our female players) and the mortal wound result that makes your hair continually grow. Nothing overly political or pervy ever happened in play other then some Conan "best in life" stylistic fetishism, but we were mostly co-workers as well. Anyway, if you have any questions about early ACKS or Macris as a DM(he also ran Modern Spearhead for us a few times), I'll try to answer from my perspective. I respect not wanting to give his libertarian causes funding, but he definitely has been a loyal friend to many who needed it without stipulation, from all across the various genetic & social spectrums - and his personal funding is mostly going to medical bills for someone who can barely leave her room. I'm not stating this for pity or to encourage sales, but to say that there is more depth to someone's character then what you see as a third party, and that creative work can be worthwhile apart from its main contributor. That all being said, his recent career decisions have put a strain on many things and people, and despite his medical bills justification, have burned up a lot of what good will remained with those around him. Personally I only see him at our 5e game (another DM) these days when he's not traveling, and he's usually pretty stressed and worn down if that helps anyone's animus RubberBands Hurt fucked around with this message at 01:32 on Nov 1, 2017 |

On the other hand, he works for loving Milo and gave Pundit and a bunch of other people platforms to dogwhistle like loving hell about the "end of Western society" or whatever white nationalists are saying as their code words today. Like he might be "just" a libertarian but he's an ally for and supporter of far, far worse if that's true.

Advanced Edition Companion is a supplement/expansion for Labyrinth Lord that makes it largely compatible with AD&D rules, even if/though Labyrinth Lord was originally based on B/X. Castles & Crusades is an adaptation of AD&D within the 3rd Edition/d20 framework, so the mechanics largely resemble AD&D, but it uses ascending AC/BAB and whatnot.

The dude really just wants to full time DM. ACKS isn't what supports him, it's just him turning our house rules into something that might lead towards more tabletop work. What supports him is the hand behind Bnnon and Milo (who he knows from Bretbart after poking at the right-wing pageview nest) that told him they'd pay++ to make his wife's slow, wasting death to Fibromyalgia more tolerable and affordable if he can help Milo "troll people so hard" or teach them how to troll or something. I don't believe he's dragging his heels on actually doing his job right, which is what I'm trying to say with "libertarian", though not as some form of justification. It definitely bothers me, and is not something trivial in my life. His stuff with the Escapist GG contributors and interviews was primarily politicizing for pageviews by hosting the "opposing voice". I can't speak to the particular voices he chose, or his actual politics beyond pining for the Libertarian party. I do know at that point he was trying to stir up easy pageviews in political categories to tie into other Defy properties (everyjoe) Anyway, ACKS itself is fun and developed with a multiracial/gendered group, who mostly worked at the Escapist; and Alex played the monsters, which he was fairly good at. Buying or stealing it won't effect anything, other than encouraging him to spend more time on it then less savory interests. I could stab him in the kidneys though, would that help anything? New OSR Bundle of Holding is up: https://bundleofholding.com/presents/OSR5 $12.50 gets you Johnstone Metzger's Nightmares Underneath and Kevin Crawford's Red Tide setting toolkit plus two books I'm not familiar with. Beating the $25 threshold gets you the Dragon Kings setting (basically Dark Sun) and Crawford's An Echo, Resounding.

Relating the bundle to the earlier discussion in here, I’ve found that I get most of what I liked about ACKS, the domain management, from An Echo Resounding.

Echoing the sentiment about "An Echo, Resounding". Great book and good structure, nice mechanisms and well made in a small package for a lot of issues. ACKS is humongously complex in comparison, but looks for a very different approach to it. Bundle would be nicer if Dragon Kings was more interesting. As it stands, its just a less interesting version of Dark Suns written with Pathfinder in mind :/

An Echo Resounding is pretty cool. It goes about domain management from a completely different angle than ACKS, and there's advantages and disadvantages to both. For those of you not allergic to RPGsite links, I've found a neat thread where Crawford and Macris discuss at length the underlying basis of their systems and the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. It's a fun look at game design and starting premises. http://www.therpgsite.com/showthread.php?21979-Domain-Management-in-ACK-vs-An-Echo-Resounding Does anyone have anything good to say about Nightmares Underneath?

The setting is pretty neat, being more Middle Eastern, and provides an interesting explanation for exploring dungeons in the "Nightmare Incursions". Also, fighters always deal damage on a miss, and deal damage twice in a hit. There is a no-art version available for free (the art is very cool though).
