It would be nice if building a cheap cabin didn't cost $10k in permits in El Paso county. Land is reasonable and dropping a well/septic is pretty reasonable, same for tying into power/phone. The next county west is like, $600 to build anything you drat well want.

45 ACP CURES NAZIS posted:can you repeat this, but english A small but significant percentage of the capital inflating the West Coast real estate bubbles comes from drug money being laundered and used to buy investment properties. This established laundering system also allows people in mainland China who are looking to move their money offshore, where the Chinese central bank is less able to gently caress with it, to do so without making the appropriate declarations on either end. If the drug money dries up because all the users die, the laundering operations will be unable to maintain solely by washing Chinese money, and will close up shop. This failure of laundering services will have a domino effect on the rest of the West Coast shadow economy, leading to the collapse of housing markets in Central valley towns like Modesto and Turlock, because there is no reason to buy a house in Modesto or Turlock unless you're doing something shady. I'll believe it. There has been an explosion in "board and care" homes around here. These are assisted living facilities below the standard of care provided by a skilled nursing facility or memory care facility. The staffing requirements for these types of homes is extremely minimal, no nurses, as the residents are unable to live independently but are theoretically lacking the sort of medical needs that require skilled nursing. Every time I show up at one of these places, it is an extremely nice home in an upscale area, with a staff of immigrant workers, warehousing people unable to live independently for Medicaid. The best guess I have is that these are a way for foreign, criminal or otherwise remote buyers who acquired the house as an investment property to try to make money off of it until they sell.

BigDave posted:Wait what? The fashion district is laundering Chinese drug money through Armenian biker gangs? California is a massive state in practically every sense of the word. The biker gangs are not Armenian, AP tends to prefer freight trucks as their "thing" outside being otherwise highly similar to the Russian Mafia. 20-30 years ago, it was Yakuza money developing Pebble Beach. Now it's klepto/triad/GT money developing practically the whole west coast. And not just luxury condos - industrial warehouse development, walk-in commercial devlopment, rental SFRs, and renovated uday-and-qusay style multi-million dollar mansions. It comes in through the EB-5 program, it comes in through "tuition" wires totaling millions of dollars to attend UC San Bernardino for 2 years, it comes in through "family loans" for all sorts of tiny businesses that aren't otherwise operating illegally, and it comes in through all sorts of really questionable consulting businesses that are designed to have Chinese patsies use their SAFE quota to wire USD $50k at a time to some long lost family member in Irvine so they can buy a bunch of property while claiming they are the newly-transferred manager for a logistics warehousing company that claims to export grain waste products but maintains a warehouse with zero humidity mitigation. China is a big country, California is a big state, there's really nothing inherent to the populations. India is starting to have stuff come in too, but Japan started cracking down from their side a while back and it's tapered off. It's a big connected web of organized crime living together like a seedy rainforest. The guys leasing the space in City of Industry might help shuffle money for Armenians by making up some amount of trucking activity for their fake grain waste stuff. Armenians need to be able to monetize the credit fraud they specialize in, so they use their fake transportation companies with dubiously licensed truckers to move high-ticket goods around for resale. Take a look at Minneapolis for what this looks like at an early stage.

Once that gets tapped out you'll see the houses start to do fucky things like one no-name escrow company managing to have scooped all the listings for a given area, getting bids in wirth check in hand before any realtor can refresh their listing pages.

There's a reason that the sale of new homes in BC and Ontario suddenly dropped off markedly as soon as the provincial governments instituted a "Foreign Buyer's tax" on each home purchase. Watch what happens when an empty home tax gets raised.

But if that’s the early stage that Minneapolis is in then doesn’t that mean that housing prices will spike when the next phase starts? Homes are still dirt cheap in Saint Paul for example.

Yep, but if there's still a decade worth of commercial growth in the CBD then you're not exactly flipping, you're holding for 10-12 years and then selling to a nice young family who is sending their student and his three BMWs to UM.

Donna Brazile is awful though so you can bet this is going to be as slanted towards the "gently caress hillary" side as possible. Honestly though? All I'm really seeing here was that Hillary's campaign was funding the DNC since 2015. Hillary's fundraisers, Hillary's events, Hillary's everything was what let the DNC function and in exchange for that her campaign had operational control of DNC dollars. Not illegal in the slightest. At most it was against internal DNC custom. Hell! Brazile even admits that despite exhaustive searches she found no evidence of the DNC rigging the system in Hillary's favour. So even with operational control of DNC dollars, that money wasn't misused. If anything, this seems a testament to the campaign's ethics, which is a sentence I never thought I'd write because lol @ Clinton + ethics.
