This is a really dumb straw man you're making. Hitler didn't mind control anybody or any poo poo like that, but he was VASTLY more talented and capable than Trump as a politician. It's not even close if you know anything about the fucker.

He wasn't exaggerating: the whole "Hitler used hypnosis to mind control all of Germany to go along with him!" was a thing that people believed, and I've seen that sentiment in old books/encyclopedias. For some reason they never needed a mind control theory when less-white dictators convinced their people to commit genocide, funny that.

In a Court of Law pleading the 5th does not imply guilt.

In the Court of Public Opinion it absolutely does.

I assume the problem is coming from the corporate rate cut. Its easy to limit deficit impacts from tax cuts for individuals, you just simply need to sunset it after 10 years. For corporations its not so easy because with a temporary tax cut they will rush to repatriate profits that they would have otherwise waited to book years or even decades from now. I don't really think its possible to pass a significant corporate tax cut through reconciliation at all if the people doing the math are honest.

It can't have been 7 hours of him taking the fifth and otherwise being stone silent.

Any conversation, without his lawyer present, and certainly one that has continued all day, is going to be valuable and have lots of opportunities to poke holes in other stories. Even if he thinks he's playing them, there's just no way he doesn't dig a bigger hole for himself and/or others.

You got it backwards. You can run deficits within the 10 years, the Byrd rule says it can't increase our debt after the 10 year window.

Your Taint posted:

Honestly asking, but isn't one of the often cited causes for the rise of Naziism is how hard Germany got hosed by the Treaty of Versailles?

There's a lot more to it than that. The treaty of Versailles certainly increased the economic woes of the Weimar Republic, but it's absurd to point to it as the sole defining factor that gave rise to Nazi Germany and it's the type of rhetoric that Neo-Nazis adore, since it paints the picture of the German people being the victim of unreasonable foreign demands.

A couple points just from the top of my head:

-The Weimar Republic was badly set up in regards to many of its checks and balances.
-Germany was still filled to the brim with old imperialists that bought into and perpetuated the "Dolchstoßlegende", further breeding resentment towards current democratic proceedings and over the loss of the Great War.
-After Russia turned Communist, the red scare hit Europe hard and as such many Germans welcomed the fascists as a counter cultural movement with open arms. Because communism is just too scary. Even the socialists and social democrats that during imperial times in the 19th century had already managed to bring many important social reforms (like gouvernmental healthcare) were tainted by their left leaning association as well as their own history of riots that had been violently put down.
-Germany already had a long history of hating on its Jewish populace since the goddamn middle ages. Even many well respected and well known contemporary German philosophers that absolutely adore their humanitarian thoughts couldn't help but just randomly poo poo on Jewish people in their contemporary writings. It was just part of the culture and already heavily marginalized, despite German Jews being well integrated into society. As such an ideology that turned the Jewish population into the source of everyones woes was just very appealing on paper to many Germans.
-The Nazi party was on the cutting edge utilizing newly realized means of propaganda and contemporary media like the radio in order to reach the masses to an unprecedented degree. Again, this was a problem in how the Weimar Republic was set up as an awkward first try at full democracy and there was no proper and thorough enough regulation in place in how parties are allowed to reach the broader populace.

All in all, the Weimar Republic was a complicated shitstorm.
And authoritarian fascism was just comfortable enough for many people. I mean, they had an emperor before and it was a popular well respected ideology at the time. Not like people were big on human rights to begin with.

It's worth reading a couple history books on the subject if you're interested. They are usually better at explaining it than I am. But I hope this suffices to at least partially dispel the myth of Germans just being the victims of an unreasonable treaty and lashing out in response.
