Parsing it closely, "The internal workings of the apparatus of the DNC" <> "The primary system"

The claim she made, as I and many others including apparently Elizabeth Warren interpreted it, was that the Clinton team had functional control over internal DNC operations prior to any primary votes being cast.

Which is not the same as rigging the actual primary voting system.

This would be a lot easier to figure out if we could get some signed and dated documents.

Well, the part of the memo where the DNC is required to encourage state parties to join the Hillary Victory Fund, essentially giving her campaign control over state level funding apparatus in August of 2015 is a pretty big thumb on the scale.

:monocle: Surely you are not suggesting that by taking control of state-level funding she could encourage various superdelegates to endorse her or not get funding for their preferred state-level candidates, which would influence the opinion that Hillary would win the primary and drive down enthusiasm for her primary opponents.

Biden didn’t run because of family tragedy by almost all accounts, not because of whatever Hillary was doing.

IMO the most likely contender to have run if things were different is Booker.

Lightning Knight posted:

1- that is not what Biden said at the time:

http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/21/politics/joe-biden-not-running-2016-election/index.html

quote:

mplicit in Biden's remarks was a realization that Clinton's position and organizational muscle in early voting states are just too strong for him to mount a credible challenge at such a late stage -- just three-and-a-half months before first votes are cast.

and while in more recent interviews he did cite family more explicitly, he also said stuff like

https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2017/10/why-joe-biden-didnt-run-for-president-and-why-hes-not-ruling-out-2020

quote:

In the same period, Obama, too, had been trying to suss out Biden’s intentions, at their weekly one-on-one lunches at the White House. The president, in Biden’s telling, dropped heavy hints that, for the good of party unity, the vice president should stand down; Clinton’s political organization was formidable, and it was her turn. Obama further cited the excitement with which he personally was anticipating life after holding high office, and asked Biden, “Joe, have you focused on that? How do you want to spend the rest of your life?”
....
All that said, a few weeks after his Late Show appearance, in October, standing in the White House Rose Garden flanked by his wife and President Obama, Biden announced that he would not be running. “I realized that I just wasn’t ready,” he told me. For one thing, he was not so naïve as to believe that he would be treated with kid gloves just because he had recently buried his son. “It was clear that there was a lot of negative research being done on me, coming from my own party,” he said, citing reports that the pro-Clinton political operative David Brock was gathering oppo materials on him.

So even when he mentions his family as a reason not to run, it is in the context that it would be an ugly fight against Clinton and that he didn't want to put his family through that.

2- Even setting aside all the stuff that Biden himself has said, in August of 2015 Clinton did not know that. All she knew was that Biden hadn't announced anything. In fact, since in August of that year Bernie wasn't seen as a strong contender yet, my main guess with regards to the memo was that it was signed as a way to cut off Biden, not Bernie.

Obama allowing the DNC to go broke on his watch and then actively helping to clear the way for Hilary seems like a retroactive vindication of all the stuff Ron Susskind was writing about in 2011 in the book "Confidence Men" regarding Obama's leadership skills and political instincts.

Well, on a positive note the attempt by an establishment Republican in Virginia to hitch himself onto the Trump bandwagon ended disastrously for the Republicans. It would have been really bad if Virginia set a precedent that any Republican rear end in a top hat can win close elections by scaremongering about MS-13 and sanctuary cities. If the GOP had pulled off a win in Virginia it would have been a big signal for other Republicans.

I mean, the gently caress do you expect? These are people who reacted to the dem establishment completely blowing the most important election of the past forty years with desperately closing ranks around the incompetents running the party and by creating some dumb stab-in-the-back myth about the treacherous lefties and closing themselves off into a bubble where everything will be fixed if they can just win the next election. Reason isn't going to reach them, so the best thing to do is to ignore them, organize and defeat the bad dems politically. There's been some good progress on that front already.
