I've no idea if there are rules about profiting off his crime, but in any case, he pled to one day of desertion, rather than the whole time. The argument is that he intentionally deserted for a day, but did not intend to get yolked up into 5 years of captivity bullshit.

Definite impression I got from Serial is that he's going to hole up in some backwoods cabin as a hermit for the rest of his life. He's from Idaho so its not like it'd be hard for him to disappear from the radar.

Kind of what goes through my head whenever I hear people talk about how few resources they had to search for Bergdahl and how thin they were stretched. Yes, him walking off like a jackass is his fault. Whose fault is it how few translators they had, air support, etc? People are quick to talk about second or third order effects when it comes to Bergdahl, but when it comes to how leadership is acting and the stupid meaningless day to day bullshit, well that's just how war is, man.
