I'm a professional digital artist who works on a big Cintiq all day- I just felt a little annoyed that the price of Procreate went up a few bucks once the new iPad pros came out - holding out to see if they have a black Friday sale.

I'm also thinking about trying Astropad out - it syncs the Pro with your Mac. Unfortunately I use a PC at work, but it might be handy for my home Macbook setup!

I have the 1st gen Astropad (without a subscription) and I thought it worked great. I never use it anymore, but it was 80% of an expensive Wacom for about 5% the cost (excluding the price of the iPad).

The only think I miss from a desktop app is ArtRage’s auto smoothing straight lines. Also Procreate does lag on my 1st gen 9.7 Pro when making a long brush stroke.

If you have an iPad Pro and use some style other than an Apple Pencil, an ornate urn somewhere in Cupertino trembles slightly.

It was already angry that you didn't just use your finger, but if you're going to use a stylus it should be an Apple one.

It can take some adjustments. I used an Waco Intuos previously, so maybe my tactile sensations were already accustomed to non-paper. At this point it feels completely natural. I have to draw something on paper as part of a Christmas gift and I'm really dreading not having layers and undos and possibly screwing up an pricey piece of paper.

I dunno why people hate smooth surfaces for drawing so much, maybe it helps that I always wear a smudge glove when using tablet monitors, even my iPad Pro, since it helps my skin not catch and stutter on the glass which I’m sure isn’t as much of a problem on a textured surface.

Your drawings remind me I need to look for some life drawing opportunities near me, I’m sure there are some somewhere in the twin cities but I really hope there’s something not at the university cause it’s a pain in the rear end to get to

Yo I just thought of an idea for finding life drawing sessions. They don't post that often on craigslist, but models sometimes do. Even if they are weirdos, they probably have some idea of the local classes and workshops. I just searched "figure drawing" on your craigslist and found this posting where he says "I am a regular at pretty much all of the local colleges and art schools as well as some drawing co-ops" like maybe you could just email him and ask for some info.

I've actually always liked the idea of just hiring someone to come pose for me for a while, although I don't really have anyone I know who'd be interested in splitting the cost (though I value life drawing enough I'd probably shell out for a private session once in a while). I don't even care if they are a weirdo who's just doing an exhibitionist thing if they can pose decently

I mentioned it earlier, but check out meetup.org. That's a good place to find art clubs where everyone pitches in to hire models. They can be pretty expensive to hire on your own. The friends of mine who did it made about 10 to 20 bucks a hour and that was 20 years ago.

Another resource for free life modeling is your significant other haha. Or, if you are in the dating world, it is a good way to take the relationship up a notch. I'm single-and-looking right now and I almost always do a sketch of their profile or portrait after a couple dates, it's great practice and a little unique and an opportunity to compliment their appearance in a genuine and demonstrable way. I've only done this once (and she had some modeling experience already) but if they're open to it you could even ask for a full-on nude life drawing session at your home (not recommended as a first-date). Tinder for figure drawing models lol well why not? There are all sorts of ways to draw naked people if you keep an open mind.

EDIT:

Krispy Wafer posted:

Thanks! I find it pretty tricky to draw women's hands, keeping a balance between definition and grace, I think I skirted the line here but I agree they came out well. Just gotta keep the shading real gentle I guess.

Radio is right that people close to you are good models, and that would be a cute 3rd or 4th date.

Fun story though: I was talking to a guy on okc who was asking me about my art and started the idea of my using him as a model. He kept pushing after I'd brushed it off, so I switched to a professional tone and thanked him, but said I only use models who come recommended from other artists. He got real pissed and told me to "grow some guts".

I've been asked by quite a few girls I date to draw/paint them and I always find a way to avoid it. I'd appreciate the practice, but if I gently caress up, or I'm too "honest" like the above poster, it's just asking for trouble.
