You should make sure to by a really nice car/jeep/truck first, don't worry about the interest rate because you can get it knocked down to like 6% once your are on active, Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act...
The $100K make it so you can get pretty much any car you want. Corvette? Top of the Line Lexus? How about a custom pickup with a lift kit and CB lights?

loving lol. You just enlisted into a job where you have a 1 in 30 chance of killing yourself for not even 100k enlistment bonus, but a 62k enlistment bonus.

That's not a 1 in 30 chance of someone else killing you on the battlefield, that's a 1 in 30 chance of you going back home, sitting on the edge of your bed, staring at the wall for 30 seconds before you reach into the drawer and pull out your 9mm and suck start it.

That's after everyone here did all they could to tell you that this is a terrible job.

And you're not even getting 2/3 of the bonus that the recruiter told you that you'd get for doing it.

Jesus loving christ.

I will never, ever join the military. Thank you, GiP....

STOMP'N ON INTO THE POWERLINES

Exciting Lemon
I thought enlistment bonus's were capped at 12 or 15k right now anyway. Its the reenlistment bonus where they start offering the big bucks, since by then you've passed training and are already starting to experience the true suffering and need a quick motivation boost to remain

Even then...

Current 2017 bonuses are based on a multiplier of base pay. A nuke E-5 up for reenlisment is making $2,500 a month. (If youre an E-4 at the time you get cashed out based on $2,200, but they bump you up to E-5 immediately, so the added additional monthly pay is often enough to offset the loss in your bonus amount)
For submariners (the superior nukes), ETNs are at x12, ELTs at x11, MMNs at x9, and EMNs are at x6.5.
For surface targets, its x7.5, x9.5, x6.5, x5.5 in the same order.

I'm going to assume bet you're going to wind up as a surface EM so you can hate your life the most! (This is what KetTarma was, and his experience may be slightly on the rough side of the bellcurve but is pretty vanilla all things considered)

$2,500 base x 4 year reenlistment x 5.5 = $55,000. A good chunk, but still not a lot of money in life.

Now if you're lucky enough to be a submarine ET and not hate your very existence, a mere 3 year reenlistment nets you 90k, which just about hits the limit for a bonus.

Oh, and have fun with the taxes!

When I was at A-school in Pensacola we had to wear dress blues off base for the first couple weeks before getting our liberty cards. It was dogshit, especially since there wasn’t a legit navy fed branch at NATTC so if you wanted to do any banking or get your poo poo in order after getting there you had to suit up like a dickhead.

If it makes you feel better, it's been 6 years since I've been to Iraq or Afghanistan and sometimes I wake up with a feeling of dread because I can't find my rifle. I would like to note that my recruiter never mentioned anything about the enlistment bonus for nuke, and prior to me causing this thread to explode a bit the only enlistment bonus mentioned to me had been something $16k for AECF, though I may be mis-remembering that number. My recruiter hasn't actually done anything to push me into nuke, that can all be blamed on my brother and most of the folks in the Navy office at MEPS. In fact, she never really mentioned much of anything about specific jobs besides telling me that I'm pretty much qualified for anything with my ASVAB score. I am leaning more and more towards remaining AECF, or possibly trying to get SECF on account of already having signed the "I'm cool with going on a sub" form. (Notably, the fact that this form had been presented to me to sign, even though I am currently signed as AECF, confused the hell out of my recruiter.)

I don't mean to seem flippant, or as if I'm dismissing all your advice out of hand, but I do have a habit of minimizing the concerns of others, and digging my heels in even in cases where I am pretty clearly wrong. I do thank you guys for your patience and/or mockery, and assure you I really don't plan on becoming a statistic anytime soon.

Unrelatedly, I wouldn't say my brother exactly loves being an HT, though he did start liking it a bit more once he started getting trained in welding. It's not an assignment he exactly chose, he just ended up with it after pissing off a few bigwigs shortly after enlisting.

LF, AECF is a good program if you're actually set on enlisting.

I was AECF and got designated ET at boot camp, ETs have a great standard of living while at sea and about middle of the road standard of living when in port. I was an ET for 6 years and loved my job, but hated being in the Navy.

If you're computer savvy or want to be, go IT and get as many certifications as you can while you're in. If you get your CCNA/CCNP and a TS clearance you can get really good jobs after 4-8 years active duty.

If you're into DnD, anime, or furries I recommend STG.
