I assume they also haven’t yet counted the urban areas that were carved off to make up a lot of those Republican districts.

On the other hand, this is the type of thing that will make Paul Ryan poo poo blood. These are the types of results that break gerrymanders wide open and usher in wave elections.

Re-stating my own thoughts in this thread from June, but in a sense it seems like Trump may have been a boon for liberal politics if it continues to encourage lifelong engagement even in midterms and so on. Like an inoculation. You get Trumped once and the rest of your life you know the value of a fair election. God willing this is a lesson the youth vote will carry with us.

Also this helps out immensely with Virginia redistricting after the census. Get a bunch of democratic incumbents as well as a democratic governor and a lot of the imbalance of VA being a blue state but sending so many Rs to congress can be undone.

cheetah7071 posted:Is this the kind of rout that makes 2018 senate matter or do you need like D+20 for that Senate's a very different dynamic and the candidates running will matter tremendously. There, you're looking more state-by-state. Some similar dynamics may be in play though. Running legitimate D contenders in state and house races across Texas may, for instance, boost Beto against Cruz ("Cruz will win no matter what, but I like this Johnny kid running for the State Senate so I'll vote for him. Might as well put one down for Beto too"). Nationwide, the House needs something like D+8 to flip. If they breach the gerrymander though, it'll go quickly. That may be what we're seeing here tonight.

I've never been apolitical, I've voted in every state and national election with one exception since 1997, but I am absolutely taking time off work going into the 2018 season to go bang on doors in PA (or wherever else is within a ~6 hour drive that's worthwhile, since I live in a liberal utopia). I've never done that before.
