If anyone is friends with Jaym Gates on Facebook, she posted something a couple of hours ago that helps in some part explain GR's initial reaction to this, before more of the women Sulieman harassed came forward:quote:The first I saw of this issue was on RPGNet, when accusations against Suleiman were made in an effort to deflect attention from a predator being outed in the discussion there. I had been called in to add information about my own harassment from John Morke, and so became privy to the conversation. Holden Shearer has a history of manufacturing claims against Suleiman, from accusing him of writing "noble terrorists" (in a story written by another author with no input from Suleiman, a particularly problematic assertion due to Suleiman being Arab American) to calling him a GamerGater after a Twitter interaction. These accusations seemed to be an attempt to distract those of us who were calling Holden out on his support and shielding of Morke, whom he describes as his best friend and someone he will protect. I am happy to provide those screenshots. Unfortunately, it seems that we're learning pretty quick to weaponize accusations of harassment, or to use them to shield other harassers. I'm posting this only to add additional information to the conversation that folks may not be privy to, not to defend (or attack) anyone.

I'm perfectly happy to take another shot at Holden, whose self-serving and craven actions were doubly harmful, since they not only were a nakedly hypocritical attempt to shield Morke, they created an environment that made it harder to deal frankly with Suleiman's behavior.

I only ask because one of the Ex3 devs defending the date rape charm with "it's the victim's fault for being weak-willed" is the only time in my life I've been actual-use-of-the-word triggered and it loving sucked and never want to go through that again. I don't remember if it was Holden or not, but given the Jaym's comment it wouldn't surprise me if it was him.

Holden was always the more "jocular" of the two. Mørke has always affected an aloof genius attitude, which is why his major missteps with the follow-up to the Abyssal Charms preview were: 1) The all-according-to-plan, I was testing our audience ?defense?; 2) Promising to apologize, but only after the Kickstarter was over so it didn't look like he was doing it for money, and then of course not doing poo poo once it finished.

A little more context here for those not aware: Previous editions of exalted had some really bad edgelord crap in them. Like, really bad. "Tween demon gangbang" bad, for one of the most notorious bits. In the lead in, the devs had gotten some hopes up by being on record that the pointlessly edgy crap was getting dropped in the new exalted. And then in the abyssals preview...well, see above.

What's really disgusting and infuriating to me is his claim to be "speaking against abusers" when it's demonstrably clear just from that thread that he's doing nothing of the sort. His interest in going after Suleiman is purely to deflect attention from the abuser he's protecting. Worse, by inserting himself into this in order to do that, it diverts attention from dealing with Suleiman, who is in fact a lovely person. It's naked what-aboutism and there he is claiming to hold the moral high ground. EDIT: My ire at Lindroos for exactly the same behavior is continually rising as well. Up to a certain point it was more in the "you've hosed up" vein with a chance to make it right, largely driven by a) the problem with whisper networks is its hard to tell who's inside of one and b) the fact that assholes like Holden had clear conflicts of interests made what was public previously hard to parse. That changed the minute other people started speaking up. Every day - hell at this point every hour - she and GR don't make it right and issue a strong retraction and apology for prior statements, the faster she and GR are falling to the same level.
